Texas Chainsaw 3D (the biggest new release this weekend) debuting at #2. The slasher film, which is described as a direct sequel to the 1974 original
Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, was initially projected to gross somewhere in the mid-teens in its opening weekend. However, the movie has now surpassed expectations and grossed $10.2 million on Friday, putting it in the #1 spot. It's now projected to gross somewhere in the $20 million range this weekend. Another surprise sees Quentin Tarantino's revenge thriller
Django Unchained grossing $6.2 million and dropping only 36%. While it's possible that these films' R-ratings will prevent them from outgrossing the PG-13
The Hobbit and
Les Miserables this weekend, it appears that
Texas Chainsaw will keep the former from reaching a four-week winning streak. Meanwhile,
The Hobbit grossed $5.2 million, putting it in third place, while
Les Mis is right behind it with $5 million.
The Hobbit recently crossed $500 million overseas, and has currently grossed nearly $765 million worldwide.
