This movie derserves the money it's getting. It was better than every CBM last year, except "X-Men: First Class".

Not surprised. This was bound to be successful as its based on a book but actually good. On a budget of $78m that gross is very impressive.

The Avengers is gonna stay number #1 at the box office until TASM comes out and that will have a nice small run until TDKR comes out.

Yeah I know I might be a little harsh on my criticism. I just hate when they bring characters into modern times. I'd be all over the idea if they kept it as a period film.

Such a mediocre movie. John Carter was better. Hunger Games's being based off a Fad Tweenie book so of course it did good.

I don't know why everyone hates on this so much. They are fantastic books, and a it's a great movie.. Not everything for girls is bad like Twilight.

@Ranger14- I agree. Kid's forced to kill other kid's isn't my cup of tea. There are better ways to create tension and drama in a film, and add some social commentary as well without watching kid's hunt down and kill each other. That's fu**ed up imo.

The movie is not about kids killing each other, and nor is the trilogy.

Consider this.
You're living in an oppressed society, and your mom has all but shut down years after your father has been killed in a coal mine detonation. You're forced to bend the rules and go hunting outside the negligible electric fence surrounding your district to keep your sister, yourself, and your mom afloat.

Then comes the Reaping, which is a lottery set up to exploit the poor for the wealthy capitol population's amusement. The government will give your family a larger rationing of food if you enter your name in multiple times. Should you get picked, you will have to participate in the appropriately named Hunger Games - the fight-to-the-death arena, which will be broadcast all over the country and is required viewing for all of this fictional nation of Panem.

Your little sister's name is chosen, and death for her is inevitable, so you volunteer in her place on impulse. Also, on a side note, a boy who once took a beating to give you purposefully burnt bread while you were starving to death has been chosen to compete with and against you.

En route to the city, you are explained the rules preceding the Hunger Games. See the Gamemakers control every aspect of the arena, including every hazard that may or may not be coincidental. They will also allow for an intervention from the sponsors who support each tribute - that being a fly-in object carrying something important for their favorite tribute to use when times are tough. In order to acquire tributes, you need to make yourself appealing and interesting - make them like you and not only want you to win, but feel as if you are capable of winning.

Considering just about everything on your mind since you were 10 was about surviving and helping your family survive, you're not exactly experienced in the ways of playing politics.

With me so far?

I'm explaining this because I want to ingrain in your mind that this movie is not about kids killing kids. That is a euphemism for the inevitable sacrifices you will make in society. Why is there a shaky cam going whenever violence breaks out? Because the filmmakers do not WANT you to like it, or enjoy it. It is also why the scenes are brief, and although I'm sure they shot enough footage to earn an R rating, the outcome remains the same. The actual "Hunger Games" don't start until at least halfway through the movie. This is why a lot of people complain that it was boring.

The second book does not feature kids killing kids at all, and the third book is about a war.

the Hunger Games was very good,I really liked it.
and the Twilight comparison is really unfair,this movie has heart,real drama,good action,great acting,great story,and even a message about our modern society,everything that Twilight doesn't have.

glad is doing well....but just until the Avengers comes out and crushes it along with all the other movies in theaters :P
