BOX OFFICE: THE HUNGER GAMES Looks Set For A $140 Million Weekend

The Hunger Games has opened even more strongly than first expected, with analysts now expecting a weekend gross of $140M. It also had the fifth highest opening day of all time, and despite not beating the Twilight series, it has topped The Dark Knight. Read on for details.

Deadline reports that The Hunger Games has smashed records with its $19.75M midnight opening, while other sources indicate that the $65.25M it made yesterday was enough for it to reach the #5 spot in the list of opening day records. This places it ahead of other top 10 films such as The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 3 and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, but behind the final Harry Potter and three instalments of Twilight. However, this is still the highest opening for a non-sequel ever.

Lionsgate are understandably said to be ecstatic with these results as they now have a very hot new franchise (based on the trilogy of novels written by Suzanne Collins) in their hands. The Hunger Games is the studios highest grossing release ever. "I’ve never lived up at this level. Very few people have," one exec told the site. "I did see some champagne glasses flowing down the hall." And it's not just North America where the adaptation has opened huge. The Hunger Games was released in nearly every territory and "humongous" is about as accurate as it gets when it comes to an estimation of how much it will end up making worldwide this weekend. Stay tuned for updates and check out my review HERE.

@Lilvic92 I don't know you well enough to know if your kidding or not. But do you really base if your are going to see a movie on how good looking the actress is?

I have read the first book and throughly enjoyed it. Really need to pick up book 2 & 3. I will be seeeing this movie next week sometime.

And congrats to everyone who was involved in the making of the film.

Saw it last night, and it was such a brilliant film, it gets a little slow at parts but I still loved every minute of it. This was great to keep off the blockbusters this year, and I might actually go see it again today. Definitely looking forward to the sequels.

@SuperArgo - Hunger games hasn't stolen anything from Battle Royale, they've got zero in common narritively. If you read the books then you'd know. These books have been the most popular teen novels next to The Twilight series in my shop for years! Its not surprising the moviSE would open huge because of that!

Battle Royale is way more basic and simplistic a tale in comparison, it doesn't have nearly half the depth and complexity of The Hunger Games novels.

@marvel72 dude I've read the book and it's not just for teenage girl. It's maybe 5%, 10% AT THE MOST romance. There rest is action, death, survival, rebellion, the ability to use your instincts and chaos. It's an excellent book.

Saw it yesterday, AWESOME AWESOME AND MORE AWESOME!!!!! And to the people who compare it to Battle Royale and Running Man, shut your [frick]ing ass face!! It is nothing like that, it isn't copying anything, there will be books that are similar to the Hunger Games nowadays, or Battle Royal, Or Running Man, SO SHUT THE [frick] UP AND STOP SAYING THAT HUNGER GAMES IS COPYING RUNNING MAN OR BATTLE ROYALE, JUST SHUT THE [frick] UP!!!!!!

kids forced to kill each other until one remains in an outdoor arena in a state sponsored blood sport for entertainment using nothing but an unknown pack of survival gear, with various alliances and groups forming amongs the kids, including an above-all-odds main character boy girl love story, sounds like there's a lot in common to me.

Now, now, people. When The Avengers ends up by the end of the year having the biggest opening weekend of all time, we'll look back on this weekend and just laugh and laugh...lol

...but I'll actually go and spend my hard earned money to see THG on Monday...haven't read the books, but I've heard enough praise from fans and critics alike to give it a chance.

@ JDUKE25

i will watch it some how,not sure how yet.

the aimed at teenage girls comment was for the following reasons

-the trailer doesn't show any action which guys like.

-pretty teenagers must be some love intrests forming there.

-they made loads of cuts to the film so it could pass for a lower rating.

-read online as well it features more romance than the book.
