Is the New James Bond Movie Ditching Action Stunts for an Oscar Nod?

On numerous occasion Daniel Craig has said that he'd like James Bond to have a softer side, and wanted to show more emotional depth. Sounds like Daniel got what he wanted as sources for The Daily Express and The Sun are reporting that Sam Mendes is cutting down on the action to make a more character driven Bond film. Is the world ready for a James Bond movie that is filled with dialogue?

Also from The Sun is that Daniel Craig will be sporting a beard, making him the second James Bond to do so. Pierce Brosnan was the first Bond with a hairy face on screen. Brosnan wore the extra coat because he was a prisoner in Die Another Day.

One source said: “There are growing rumours Sam Mendes is cutting out the action scenes and making it Oscar-friendly.”

Insiders maintain that “action scenes in India have all been axed” though scenes in Istanbul and Duntrune Castle in Argyll “are still there for the moment”.

A source added: “This could be a disaster in terms of sales at box office. Given that this 007 needs to make at least £300million to break even, it may be a very high price to pay for an Oscar nomination.” - The Daily Express

The 007 star is required to have facial hair in the upcoming spy movie Skyfall, making him the first Bond to do so.

A source said: "They've really scaled back. The lavish production and locations have been cut. There is only a reduced cast and crew traveling to the few overseas destinations. There's not so flash hand-to-hand fighting, it's gone back to blowing stuff up – including London's Vauxhall Bridge." - The Sun

London's Vauxhall Bridge

When shooting starts on November 7, the actor will have to switch from a Range Rover to a Jaguar – with both motors on the move. Traders at central London's Smithfield Market are in for an exciting day as that's where the car chase is set to be shot. - The Sun

MSN Cars’ insider sources tell us that an Evoque was delivered to Pinewood Studios this very morning. And given Pinewood is home to the Albert R. Broccoli 007 Stage it doesn’t take much to put two and two together and get ‘kerching!’

While Land Rover is unwilling to confirm or deny at this moment, not only is the high-tech sleek and muscular look of the Evoque perfect for the world’s most famous super spy, the slinky SUV’s British brand credentials also fit very sweetly.

Land Rovers have appeared in Bond movies before, of course. Notable on-screen excursions include the custom Range Rover convertible in Octopussy – a player key in the pre-title escapade involving a horse-box hidden Acrostar Jet – the Defender that gets driven out of a Hercules in The Living Daylights, and the Range Rover Sport Daniel Craig crashes as a distraction in Casino Royale. - cars.uk.msn.co

Craig's third outing as James Bond will be released on October 26, 2012. Daniel Craig will be joined by Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, as well as a Judi Dench as M.

Why can't we have both? The reason I like Daniel Craig's bond movies is because of the action. The scene at the beginning of Casino Royale where he chases that dude all through town is one of the coolest scenes ever.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bond has a beard in the early scenes of Die Another Day. Whoever wrote this news item has obviously never seen Die Another Day and should do better research.

No Q?
That Range Rover is sick.
They need a foot chase soon to rivel the ones in Casino Royale and QOS which are some of the best IMO

Still pissed Casino royale never got an oscar nod lol Looking forward to any bond film that comes out...ive seen the cheesy, the breezy versions of bond and the most recent not so entertaining qos. So a little oscar hope might be a good thing lol

it needs some action, after all it is Bond. But taking a bit of inspiration from Tinker Tailor and focussing more on character, story, and real spy work couldnt hurt after Quantum of Solace's action heavy, story lacking plot.

Also 'The first Bond since Pierce Brosnan with a hairy face'... he's also the first Bond since Pierce Brosnan, period.

It'll still have action guys. It'll just have more emotion now. Sounds like a good thing to me.

i thought this was gonna be a really gritty bond with LOTS of action? i like the hand2hand combat rumor but i dont want em cutting action set pieces, that would suck.

When I bought my mini 2 years ago I had it delivered to pinewood studios where I was working at the time

it could have been for ANYONE working there (right now about 4000 people)

also he won't be the first bond to sport facial hair (if he does in the film which I am dubious, unless time has passed and he cant get to a razor, it def wont be for the whole film) Pearce Brosnan sported a beard for a bit in one of his films (I forget wich one now)

I hope this is true. The novels are spy thillers, enough of this action man crap. I mean seeing him leaping from cranes and beating the hell out of people is all great to watch, but its not James Bond.

If they do this, then it'll probably get Razzie nods. I've never read the novels, but I still think that the films should have a little bit of stunts. I think that they should cut down on some of the explosions and fast car stuff, but not go too far. Perhaps they should replace a lot of the action with mystery and thrill.

If it ends up to be a great movie i dont mind at all. :)

James Bond needs to be more character driven like Casino Royale.
mgeoff88
mgeoff88 - 10/23/2011, 3:23 PM
I don't know about this. I'm all for making the film more character driven, but you don't have to cut action scenes to do that.

No hand-to-hand fighting? When Bond can't shoot or outsmart someone he takes them on in hand-to-hand combat.

The more I read it the worse it sounds. I hope this isn't true.

Im 100% sure we are going to see lots of fight scenes and action scenes in the movie when its finally ready.
I dont think the producers let them take much away cause the action is pretty big part of Bond.

They just want it to be more than just a simple action film.

NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 10/23/2011, 5:42 PM
Making the film boring is an obvious mistake. If they want to make an Oscar type action thriller, they should do so with an original property. They've already changed Bond a bit. I like the first one and the second one is okay but drifts even further away Bonds themes. It's like Nolan's BATMAN but more restricted. You should be able discern that ti is a Bond film.

Hand to hand combat is one of the coolest things in the world, why would anyone want to take that away for a silly award that means jack shit?

They could get nominated and still keep their action stunts just like inception if they have a pretty good story
