Rooney Mara's Transformation into Lisbeth for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Director David Fincher had the daunting task of trying to find the perfect actress to play Lisbeth. See why Rooney Mara had enough strangeness to land the female lead.

Rooney Mara had a hard time convincing Director David Fincher that she was right for the role. But mentally she had want he needed. As Rooney told Vogue, "I’ve always been sort of a loner. I didn’t play team sports. I am better one-on-one than in big groups. I can understand wanting to be invisible and mistrusting people and wanting to understand everything before you engage with the world.”

After numerous callbacks Fincher finally started to embrace Rooney as his number one choice. Rooney was lovable but also strange. Fincher embraced Rooney's strangeness saying, "She’s a weirdo. She’s a great weird."

Rooney Mara who looked sweet and beautiful in Fincher's The Social Network, but she had to go through a tremendous physical transformation to become the alien like creature Fincher wanted.

And so began an agonizing period for Mara. “It was like, ‘Come in. We need you to do this, we need you to do that.’ That’s all I thought about and all I did for weeks.” She mentions a time Fincher said, “Go out and get really, really drunk and come in the next morning so we can take pictures of you.” He wanted to show Sony that she could look strung out. “And I did it!” says Mara. “Threw up all night!”

She is referring to her complete physical transformation at the hands of Pat McGrath, the doyenne of haute makeup; rock-diva hairstylist Danilo; and the costume designer Trish Summerville. As Summerville says, “We didn’t want her to be this girl who looks like a musician in a rock band. She’s real. A lot of the time she’s dirty. She wipes her nose on her sleeve.”

Holed up in a tiny studio for two days with Fincher and Mara, McGrath created about 26 different looks. “We went from the white-powdered sick-clown makeup to stitches in the face all the way to greasy, bloody eyes. I instantly knew how I could make her character so different. And then once the hair was cut in that mad shape, I was like, Well, the eyebrows have got to go. And in the end, it would look now and it would look new.”

Two weeks later, Mara was in a New York hotel room, where Danilo “cut my hair, shaved the sides, bleached the eyebrows, then dyed my hair black,” she says. “Then we went and did the piercings—all in one day. I went in looking like Erica Albright and I came out like this.” Was she traumatized? “The eyebrows were the biggest shock because that really changed my face, and I didn’t recognize myself. But I was fine because I knew it was going to be really helpful for getting into character.”

Why is it everyone is so quick to point out when someone posts something previously posted?

Sometimes, even if true, its the first time we read it.

Is it just another way to troll, or are people just that nit picky?

Someone losing money or something?

Saw the originals....looking forward to checking out these versions.

I'm confused - why is this being rebooted so soon? I'm sure it was only released in the cinemas in the UK last year!

Don't be so hard on her. So she's not the best looking girl in the world! Why so superficial!

@Rothwilder, i agree with you, when i first joined this site years ago it seemed like the articles were much better and higher quality. now it seems like it is a competition on who can get the articles up first and who can post the most articles, usually about something so insigificant like who plans on buying the latest blu-ray or dvd. it seems like i only normally read ten percent of whats posted now where as when i was first coming to the site it was more like 90-95%, over the years as more and more articles about insigificant or obscure things got posted the less i click on. I think this competition over who can post the articles the fastest takes away from the articles. who cares what dvd or blu-ray ppl are gonna buy or what actor farts in so and so general direction, count up the number of tom hiddleston articles where someone posts a snipet of conversation or a picture or him buying grocerys or whatever, it must be in the 20's in just the past few days. sorry for the rant but it does seem like the quality of articles have gone down because of ppl competing:(

@ NiteSoul69 gotta agree, what kills me most are these polls, what did you think of such and such trailer or casting when the general consensus is pretty obvious if you read the comments section.

Can't wait for this. It's my most anticipated movie this year. Almost done with the first book. Fincher is one of my favorite directors.

Rooney was a perfect choice for this role!
so pleased with the transformation, she went from the plain girl next door type to an edgy biker chick.
