Really man? I'm supposed to buy toys to suppor the show?

I tune in to GL and YJ every saturday and I also record them. I love these shows and have showed my support by tuning into every episode. That should be enough, and because I support the show I feel a complete right to criticize the execs who are yanking it.

I shouldn't have to buy the GL and YJ toyline to "show my support."

Yea because we don't have bills to pay in this crappy economy, let's all go out and buy GL toys to try and keep the show on the air.

GL, especially Hal Jordan, just sucks.

Everything he's in gets cancelled, his books are about to be cut in half once Johns leaves.

I know what's pretty good on my part--Carol's voice actress, Jennifer Hale, is coming to the comic-con near me in a couple of weeks.

Believe it or not, because of some people's financial states, we can't all buy the toys or DVD's. Each action figure is about $8 and each DVD is about $15. I understand that this supports the shows and that's fine, but ultimately they look at the ratings over everything else to see if people are watching. That is what determins the cancellation or renewal factor, not toy sales. The "low ratings" probably have something to do with the fact that they pulled both shows for 4 months on end (twice I might add)! That is half of their issue right there. The other problem is that they aren't reaching their target audience. Sure, some kids watch the show, but it's mostly older fans. That's the other half of the problem.

On that note, I'm going to miss these shows. Screw you CN for pulling the only good shows on your network with the acception of Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated!!!

@ 113 I agree w/ you.

I believe Green Lantern & Young Justice was cancelled because the story lines were getting too serious for the "kiddie" demographic. The episode where Aya has her breakdown was better than most live action dramas on network TV. It's disappointing that Cartoon Network can't take into consideration their young adult / adult demographic who want more out of their shows than noisy, mindless entertainment, which seems to be the direction that CN is moving towards. My guess is they'll drop Clone Wars from the line-up or make the stories more "kid" friendly.

Grown men buying toys, yeah that will work.

Try getting love from little kids like Ben10 or the TMNT in the 90's or TF/GiJoe in the 80's instead of grown men, yikes.

I bought the S1 P1 dvds of Green Lantern. What baffles me is why WB is dragging their feet in offering blurays of their modern shows. I understand BtAS is old enough it doesn't make sense, but the DVD's of GL and YJ pale in comparison to my 1080 DVR recordings.
I hesitated in buying YJ on DVD in hopes of a blu ray collection coming. I had every intent on supporting the show.

I haven't said anything on here in a while but it needs to be pointed out to you know-it-alls who think it's getting cancelled due to a lack of toy sales. THERE IS NO FREAKING TOY LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zero! Nanda! Zilch! That's part of the damn problem and a prime example of the mismanagement of the property by Cartoon Network. YOU CAN'T BUY TOYS THAT DON'T EXIST!!!!!! The only tie-in merchandise for GL:TAS was a McDonalds Happy Meal promo and two $125 statues from DC Direct! The animated series was intended to coincide with the failed live action movie and when the movie flopped, the series was set up to fail. They cancelled plans for a toy line. They didn't promote in any way the bare bones home video releases. They shifted the programming schedule. They through it on inexplicably long and random hiatus. They wanted this thing to fade away. Look, I know in many cases, merchandise tie-ins for kid shows have an impact on a show's success but in the case of GL:TAS they didn't even make them!!

@GLFanboy, actually there was a toy line that was offered by Mcdonalds to be given out with their Happy Meals:

I don't think that the series was canceled. It was just not renewed for another season. Let's all hope that there are plans to sell the show to some other network or cartoon block. This is a great series.

I want to think that it was the cost to put on the shows vs the ratings. Green Lantern: The Animated Series alone more than likely cost around $2 million per episode so if you think about it, the entire DC Nation block must have cost a lot more. The thing is that for that $2 million, GLTAS was ranked 21st out of CN's Saturday morning shows. I am sure the studio figured that they might get a better ranking for the same price with a CGI Batman show. Young Justice was ranked higher (11th), but it was for a more mature audience and would compete directly with TT-Go (which probably will be geared for a younger audience). Who really knows. I certainly hope that the beat writers ask these guys a lot of questions at the upcoming comic book conventions.
GLFanboy
GLFanboy - 2/15/2013, 9:53 AM
@dnno1 I mentioned that in my post and that's not even close the same as a toy line. It's just a month-long promotion to help sell cheeseburgers.
I do agree with your analysis though. The point I was making actually goes right along with what you're saying. The ratings it was/is receiving are directly related in large part to a total and utter lack of promotional and cross promotional support. Prior to the live action movie you just know WB execs had visions of every kid in America begging mom and dad for a GL Halloween costume and toys for Christmas. When that delusion was shattered by the movie's poor performance, they already had GL:TAS in production. Without a doubt, like you said, they see Batman as a much more profitable entity and scrapped GL. The sad part though is that they're throwing out the baby with the bathwater. The stink of the live action film is pretty much gone now. In kid's eyes, it's a distant memory. With more support, a real toy line, solid promotion or hell, just some faith in their product, this series could do much better in terms of the numbers. For the most part, kids (and even to a large extent, adults) don't determine what they like. Advertising does. In-your-face, over saturated advertising. Without it, it's an uphill battle. If I were Bruce Timm and his team, I would be giving serious thought to seeking out greener pastures outside of WB and DC. They put so much hard work into their efforts and do it with such skill only to have the rug pulled out from under them time after time. I would hate to see that happen but, man, could you blame him?
GLFanboy
GLFanboy - 2/15/2013, 10:03 AM
@dnno1 Currently there are no plans to sell it off, but you could not be more correct in thinking that they should! An earlier poster mentioned it's increasingly dark tone. In an ideal world they should have moved it to 8:00 or 9:00pm and further embraced that tone JLU style.

@LEVITIKUZ your right man, all people had to do was buy one simple piece of merchandise, regardless of there financial state the people creating these shows are the same way.

DC finally had a chance to market a great character, and i'm am very hurt to see the show be taken away. i do hope we will get to see hal and the rest of the gang in more animated features.

@GLFanboy this show was great, i've been a GL fan since the first moment i saw him appear in superman:TAS. i thought the way they were introducing the world of GL was great for old or younger viewers. if you want to sell a character getting rid of his TV show isn't a step in the right direction. regardless of the animation( which i think is awesome) the show had so much to go on. i'm so hurt that it's over

As much as I love Johns' run, my biggest complaint was that we never really got to see the War of Light in full swing. We go the introduction of each corps and then BAM Blackest Night. I feel like this show is playing that aspect out better than the comics did.

Shame to see it go. I was looking forward to seeing Sinestro and the yellow corps show up. Would have been awesome.

CN's main issue was advertisment. No one advertises comics or comic based toys on television and blames people for not getting into it. Especially for the "little kids" coming up. What they should've done was advertise toys or whatever in the morning and put GL and YJ at a later time slot for the actual fans of the show. I mean, duh.

@peterparker1991 so true i can remember when beast wars use to be on and there was always tv adds, i can say i haven't seen to many toy adds for anything now a days.

i live in canada and i don't get cartoon network( yes i live under a rock) but the channels that play it here put it on a 7pm time slot on fridays and then replay it saturday and sunday mornings. i really don't understand why they wouldn't change the time slot before deciding to cancel the shows
dnno1
dnno1 - 2/15/2013, 2:11 PM
@GLFanboy, my point was that selling toys was not what killed the show(s) -- for that matter they were selling the episodes for $1.99 and there weren't enough people buying that. In the case of GLTAS it was more than likely ratings compared to an equivalent (CGI) Batman series. Ratings = advertising $ (not necessarily series related toy lines and paraphernalia) and they probably saw more of an opportunity with Batman than anything else. That's pretty sad, since they could have paired the two into a 1-2 hour block (not counting YJ since it is part of the Teen Titan's franchise, which would have basically a new series in Teen Titans Go). Even though we are whining about how they are passing on a great series, this is still a numbers game. If anyone failed Green Lantern it was us (and The Pirate Bay) since we were not able to show the studios that we were just as interested in it as we would have been for a Batman series.
