Peyton Reed is out promoting the home video release of Ant-Man but interviews are also touching on what Peyton has planned for the sequel, whcih was recently revealed to be titled Ant-Man & The Wasp. Of course, Peyton must first finalize his contract to return if he's to put his plans for The Wasp in motion. Said Reed, "We’re still in the middle of negotiation, but it’s looking pretty great. I’m dying to come back and do the movie. I’m very excited about it."
In terms of what Reed brought to the first film, the director indicated that it was his decision to place a greater emphasis on both Hope Van Dyne and Janet Van Dyne. "That was one of the things that was important to me in the first movie when I came on was emphasizing the Wasp more, both Hope Van Dyne and Janet Van Dyne...It’s such a no-brainer that there needs to be female heroes. It’s about keeping the stories interesting and having fresh stories to tell. I always like that about Ant-Man and Wasp because it dealt with gender politics as well as superhero stuff. In the comics, particularly in the ’60s comics, the Janet Van Dyne Wasp was clearly written by all men and was pretty one-dimensional. She’s gotten much more dimensionalized since then. That’s one of those things that I think is going to be really exciting and fresh about this movie. You do feel a certain amount of responsibility. At the end of the day it’s organic to that character and the movie.”
Ant-Man & The Wasp is scheduled to hit North American theaters on July 6, 2018. Currently Reed and write Adam McKay are in negotiations to return. Ant-Man will next be seen in Captain America: Civil War. Hope's Wasp was originally scheduled to make her debut in Civil War but the Marvel brass ultimately decided the large number of characters in the film would be a disservice to the character's debut.
