AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Star Simu Liu Mounts An Impassioned Defense Of The Superhero Movie Genre

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has spoken out in defence of the superhero movie genre while saying the time he spent on the Avengers: Doomsday set was his "dream come true."

Simu Liu made his MCU debut in 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, though the character has since been sidelined. During his nearly five-year break from the role, the actor has further established himself with memorable performances in BarbieArthur the King, and Last Breath.

Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time may not have happened (a movie we've heard was set to connect the Ten Rings to a Kang Variant), but Liu will return as the Master of Martial Arts in next December's Avengers: Doomsday

The hero is expected to be a member of Sam Wilson/Captain America's team. Plus, while filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton is busy working on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a Shang-Chi sequel could come our way in Marvel Studios' next Saga, given the first movie's critical and commercial success.

Talking to Variety, Liu once again expressed his excitement to have assembled alongside the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four.

"It was really awesome, exciting," he told the trade. "So many actors that I grew up watching, and to get to kind of play in that sandbox with them…it’s a dream come true. I grew up watching superhero movies and wanting to believe that the outcasts and the nerds and the weirdos could find it in themselves to have superpowers and save the day."

"That’s what 12-year-old me clung on to," Liu continued. "I still believe, for better or for worse, in the power of what those movies stand for today."

Despite often expressing frustration with Shang-Chi's absence before being added to the Avengers: Doomsday cast, Liu remains a steadfast supporter of the superhero movie genre.

"It’s kind of fashionable now to hate on it," he said. "I think there are valid critiques of the way that movies are made, the way that production budgets are handled, I think that there are a lot of valid things to say, but this idea of shitting on superhero movies as a genre, I don’t know. I don’t know I because I am speaking as somebody who just absolutely loved watching them as a kid."

While some will argue that Liu has a vested interest in defending the MCU, it's always great to see an actor from these movies speak out to defend them at a time when its detractors are taking such delight in crying, "superhero fatigue!"

Despite not making any live-action MCU appearances since 2021, Liu has reprised his role as Shang-Chi in Marvel Animation's What If...? and Marvel Zombies.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive on December 17, 2027.

At the end of the day, the genre has become stale and boring, and so many other franchises are more appealing right now

@AdrianChase - Like what? Video game adaptations?

Superhero movies will be relevant as long as people like superheroes. The comics where loved by adults and kids for most of the previous century. The popularity of superhero movies can last just as long.

@AdrianChase - Which can be fixed if true without writing off the entire genre, they experimented a LOT with differing styles/tones in phase four and five in regard to the MCU and were hit and miss (COVID, strikes and trying to do too much at once not helping) but no reason why they can't return to fresh great storytelling again as already shown to a large degree with the last two entries (even if not to all tastes).

@MaximusTheMad - video game adaptations are definitely the next big thing in Hollywood I think. Which I think is kinda lame, as most adaptations nowadays they're going for 1-on-1 instead trying to justify adapting it in another medium.

@AdrianChase - I'm telling you this Manga/Anime movement about to take over. Same way adults in their 30s and 40s that grew up on superhero stuff and are taking their kids to the to these movies those same kids are growing up on anime and are soon gonna be adults with families spending on the stuff they grew up on with anime. Superhero stuff will always be there but its time of dominance will be over soon. You're seeing it already.

@krayzeman -

I doubt we'll see big budget Anime/Manga movies in the near future. Why? Because most of it is steeped in a foreign culture which makes it harder to adapt. Then again, anime/manga is popular BECAUSE it's so different, but good luck convincing studios to give 200 million to a Japanese writer/director with a Japanese cast and VFX crew.

Why didn't they follow through with Shang Chi 2? They've green lit so much crap since Endgame.

@TheVandalore - Cos strikes and slamming on the brakes after trying to do too much at once during the pandemic and the course correction away from Kang.

They had way too many IP's running at once to have the gaps between solo films around 2 or 3 yrs without doing four or more film releases a year. Need to remember that Thunderbolts and DP&W are the ONLY releases thus far that didn't start pre-production fully before 2022 (and ideas for those had already been bounced around for a year or two at that point), although F4 didn't fully start production till after Watts stepped down in 22' they first announced plans for it back in 2019 prior to the first Shang-Chi release.

Keep in mind the gap between Dr Strange solo's was SIX years, GotG3 SIX years after the second too so BIG gaps not that odd just the lack of Avengers movies made them more noticeable and by all accounts pre-prod of Shang-Chi2 HAD been greenlit, just put on hold till after Doomsday at minimum with the reception of Antman3, delays and slowing of release rates.

Good on Simu for saying this , I like him even more now tbh!!.

I can understand if certain people think these superhero films permeate pop culture too much nowadays which can certainly lead to fatigue but I have never understood crapping on the genre of it’s not necessarily your thing considering the same disdain is never shown for Westerns or Sci fi.

However what really disappoints and saddens me is seeing certain people on here hating on it because then I’m like , go talk about something you do enjoy because life’s too short to constantly dwell on something you don’t like.

Anyway , hopefully Simu’s upcoming show “The Copenhagen Test” aswell as other upcoming projects are successful and turn out well…

I especially wish the Sleeping Dogs film he is trying to make is greenlit soon!!.

Never in the history of comicbookmovie-dot-com fandom... since the Pandemic... will some within this community understand that concept LOL.

Part of the problem as I see it is that superhero movies shouldn't really be a genre. You dig through 20th century marvel or DC offerings and they're pretty distinct.
In the 2010s someone decided Marvel movies need to be made in a specific mold and hamstrung themselves, when they had the GA by the balls.
It's not superheroes people are sick of, it's endless repetition of the same cliches and tropes. All the kinda shit Ryan Reynolds Deadpool lampoons and then goes on to do anyway. Winking at the audience about how repetitious your tropes are and then still expecting them to swallow it.

@PapaSpank54 - Exactly. What is even the difference between a superhero movie and every other story following the heroes journey formula. Very few superhero movies actually follow a traditional superhero, with a mask and a secret identity, patroling the city and saving citizens from giant robots. MCU movies are so diverse that they have almost nothing in common, beyond all of them being based on Marvel comics.

@PapaSpank54 - I get your point. It's more of an umbrella term, but that goes for a lot of genres nowadays. Horror, thriller and comedies are all over the place too

@bkmeijer1 - Yup and a lot of crossover when it comes to genres, as in CAN have sitcom CBM's such as Wandavision went with, thriller/horror CBM's with the likes of Blade and Werewolf by Night, political drama CBM's with V for Vendetta, War film CBM's such as Cap and Wonder Woman's firsts, Sci-Fi CBM's with GotG and even Western or period drama CBM's if you want theoreticaly and don't even need to be all action centric.

@Apophis71 - more horror and western cbms would be great imo

Apophis71 - 11/18/2025, 6:30 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Still waiting for a realy good adaption of Jonah Hex and the first live action version of Ghost Rider made me want to see the Carter Slade story done onscreen too. I am not a HUGE western fan but both DC and Marvel have played with the genre in fun ways I'd enjoy watching if adapted well.

Overdue a better attempt with Spawn on the horror side of things and certainly need more delving into Midnight Sons/Suns within the MCU at the very minimum where things currently stand with CBM's.

Shame they messed up so much with Hellboy after the decent start they made first time around (second may have been a shadow of the first but still wanted the third planned film prior to the reboot attempt). We have had a fair few attempts with DC horror of various sorts, more so than from any other comics but they have been a bit hit and miss and oft watered down when adapted but did enjoy in differing ways both the TV series and film versions of Constantine along with Doom Patrol, Sandman and the Dead Boy detectives.

You have to have a great idea and a great reason for a 2nd Shang-chi movie. The first was okay until the last 3rd of the movie just fell apart. The movie wasn't made because they had a fantastic idea. They had an excellent character but didn't put in the effort beyond box checking. Sad.

"It’s kind of fashionable now to hate on it..."

That's 89% of this specific message board community. A bunch of whiny-ass, grown men with the same complaints. They don't get the point that they don't have to see the movie. Hate from outside the club.

What's more amazing is some of those whiny-ass adults have admitted, in this community, that they will still pay to see Doomsday. What kind of phucking morons are these people LOL?

Anywho, I'm glad Simu is having a good time shooting these movies. Not many of us can say we enjoy our jobs. Hell, there's A LOT of filmmakers, execs, and actors that can't say they like their jobs either (for any of the reasons why these productions encounter mad drama). Productions can turn out great. Or, they can turn out like McG's Terminator movie (that movie had potential, but it's at least a fun, campy watch), or Trank's FF (2015).
