Elizabeth Olsen Is Aware Of Superhero Fatigue - But Explains Why She Still Wants MCU Return As Scarlet Witch

WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen has commented on some people being "exhausted" by superhero movies, but explains why it's a genre she wishes to continue coming back to as Avengers: Doomsday rumours swirl.

Even when superhero movies were at the height of their popularity, many people chose to vilify the genre and blame it for all of Hollywood's problems (here's looking at you, Martin Scorsese).

Now, post-COVID, theaters would kill for another Avengers: Endgame, especially as $1 billion hits are few and far between.

Still, "superhero fatigue" has set in, and comic book movies are no longer a guaranteed draw. DC Studios is well on the way to turning around the DC brand after the DCEU's disastrous final few years, while Marvel Studios is prioritising quality over quantity after a jam-packed, largely hit-or-miss Multiverse Saga.

Talking to PEOPLE, WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen confirmed that she remains committed to playing the Scarlet Witch. The actress also acknowledged that, while some may be "exhausted" by superheroes, these movies are ultimately made for the fans, not critics.

"It is something that I love, and it's something I always want to return to," she explained. "I think the thing that's been so special about the last five years is I've gotten to do so much with the character that I never thought I would. There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that I'd love to do that I think fans also want to."

"I mean, these movies aren't for critics, these movies are for fans," Olsen continued. "It's really fruitful, and the stories have only gotten better for me, my character. I really enjoyed it."

"Some people have ongoing television series that they get to return to. Very few, I feel like, get to be a part of franchises that, I know we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by, but there is something about them that becomes very familial. There's nothing else really like it, and I don't know that I'll have [that] again unless it's for an ongoing show."

"I do like that kind of consistency. It feels good. I mean, job security feels nice — I think we can all agree on that," she concluded.

Rumours continue to swirl about Olsen's MCU future, and the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star is expected to return as Wanda Maximoff in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars

There are conflicting reports about what she'll be getting up to. Some claim she'll be Doctor Doom's "bride", and others suggest Olsen is set to play a Variant of the Scarlet Witch in the X-Men Universe who fights alongside her father, Magneto. Ultimately, she may do both.

It's shit film and agenda driven fatigue

@HelloBoysImBack - Agenda driven fatigue? The Scarlet Witch is an extremely powerful character. Captain Marvel is an extremely powerful character. Wiccan is an extremely powerful character. Sue Storm is an extremely powerful character. Why does the existence of strong female characters make men feel like it undermines the existence of Thor or other strong male heroes?

@HelloBoysImBack - What "AGENDA DRIVEN" story telling has you triggered besides female story telling?

@SonOfAGif - how about shit storytelling being put to one side because of agenda storytelling

Agatha shit
Ironheart shit
Moon knight shit
Brand new day shit
She hulk shit
Ms marvel ok if you are a child but got no views
Secret invasion shit and making Gaia the most powerful being topped it off
Falcon and winter soldier shit
Hawkeye shit we don't need childish female Hawkeye
Black Widow was shit but no because of the characters
Thor love and thunder shit... just had to have female "Thor"

Did I miss any?

@HelloBoysImBack - Yeah. You missed the "Agenda" what is it about those projects were "Agenda" storytelling. I'm genuinely curious.

@HelloBoysImBack - So in a prior comment you stated "When did I mention females imbecile" and then proceed to mention females. Mighty Thor is a real character. And if you followed Moon Knight you would understand what an Avatar is and how Thor indirectly created his Avatar. It just so happened to be Jane. Why is that such a hard concept to grasp.

@MonkeyBot - I think it’s a combination of fatigue, overexposure, and in general for me, especially on the marvel side, I found the tv shows and movies boring. I think they could have done a lot with the multiverse but without having key actors marvel put themselves trapped in a corner. Hopefully the next two avengers movies course corrects.

"Now, post-COVID, theaters would kill for another Avengers: Endgame..." -Josh 'Make-Mine-Marvel' Wilding

I'm trying to imagine a time and a place (perhaps 10 or 15 years from now) when Josh doesn't reference the COVID shut-down of the theaters while making excuses for the various MCU failures and box-office bombs since 2019. 🫤

Not CBM fatigue, Josh. It's shitty-to-meh movie fatigue. You know, the movies that you rate as 4- and 5-stars without fail.

@Forthas - Man of Steel is a far better Superman than James Gunn's Superman.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 10/5/2025, 5:10 PM
@SonOfAGif - sure if you think a Kal who sits idly by and watches from 10 yds away as his father kills himself via weather is by any means inspired screenwriting, certainly.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 10/5/2025, 5:42 PM
@McMurdo - Definitely better writing than a Kal whose parents sent him to Earth to enslave humanity and impregnate as many women as he can. He's Superman not a Viltrumite.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 10/5/2025, 6:42 PM
@SonOfAGif - but that Kal doesnt call into question his sense of morality solely because his parents arent who he believed them to be. Quite the opposite in fact. Not the case for Snyders Kal. He coulda saved his dad and chose not too.coulda had him in Indiana in the snap of a finger.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 10/5/2025, 7:05 PM
@McMurdo - That scene was so stupid I agree. To hide his son's secret, He sacrificed himself knowing he was the bread maker of the family and his wife needed him. It was poor writing. He should have died when the Kryptonians assaulted his farm. Him dying protecting Kal and Ma Kent would have been a deeper message about love and sacrifice for your family.

Superhero fatigue is worse than you think. The last 8 MCU projects have all flopped. Wonder Man will make it 9. Either low viewership or pathetic box office. The DCU is already off to a horrific start. The Suicide Shit is one of the biggest flops ever, no one watched Shit Commandos, Supershit flopped big time overseas (as did all Superhero movies in 2025), and Orgymaker still hasn't charted yet and Season 2 is almost up.

Now if WB and Disney were smart, they'd obviously clean house and reboot. But they aren't smart at all. Gunn, Feige, and Kennedy for that matter will continue to fall upwards. And as we can see, more and more of this garbage will fail.

The Superhero genre is already dead. We're just pushing it further and further into the grave.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

While I disagree with Olsen’s stance about these movies being for fans rather then critics because some critics can still be fan , I do align with the rest of her statement.

Anyway , Elizabeth has been great as Wanda so hopefully we do see her sooner then later because we enjoy watching her as much as she enjoys playing the character if not moreso!!.

Well Visión already had a human form on Infinity war, would have been less contrived to have her magic children born around that time.
