Marvel Comics Rebrands INFAMOUS IRON MAN As RISE OF DOOM; Confirms Robert Downey Jr.'s AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Role

Marvel Comics will reprint Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev's Infamous Iron Man in 2026, and ahead of Avengers: Doomsday's release, it's been rebranded as The Rise of Doom.

With Brian Michael Bendis returning to Marvel Comics in 2026, the publisher is reprinting several of his most famous stories. One of them, Infamous Iron Man, seems particularly relevant to next December's Avengers: Doomsday and goes on sale in July.

However, the planned Infamous Iron Man reprint has been given an intriguing new moniker: The Rise of Doom.

The series, which ran for 12 issues and picked up with Victor Von Doom in the wake of Secret Wars. With his face healed, the villain suited up as the new Iron Man and became a "hero."

It didn't last, but many fans are convinced that it could inspire what we see in the next Avengers movies, especially with Robert Downey Jr. now playing Victor in place of Tony Stark.

The description for Bendis and Alex Maleev's series has also been updated, and once again confirms that Donwey is playing Victor, not an Iron Man Variant (we're still not convinced there won't be some sort of link between the two).

Iron Man's very own Robert Downey Jr. returns as Doctor Victor Von Doom (you read that right!) in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters December 18, 2026. The Marvel Universe's greatest villain is no stranger to armor, but now he's trying something new on for size: heroism. And where Tony Stark failed, Doom will succeed. But what is Victor's master plan?

That's what a great number of folks want to know — including Ben Grimm, Pepper Potts and the other Iron Man: Riri Williams! In his heroic quest, Doom faces a cosmic-level adversary — and his most mortal enemy, whom he thought he would never see again! But what is the shocking truth behind Victor's reincarnated mother? With enemies on all sides, how can Victor continue to carry on the legacy of Iron Man when the legacy of Doom haunts him at every turn?

Below, you can check out the original covers for the collected editions of Infamous Iron Man/Infamous Iron Man: The Rise of Doom (via Bleeding Cool).

Why is this still a surprise? We knew from moment one Downey is playing Victor von Doom. If it was someone else, the Russos would've announced him as Doom and not Victor von Doom.

I swear to god if they introduce some Tony-Doom variant to the comics after killing Victor for "synergy"....

Feige thinks "comic accurate" is what ever crap Disney wrote 2-3 years prior. WRONG! Comic-accurate is the classic Lee/Kirby stories! The stories of John Romita, Chris Claremont, John Bryne, Kurt Buseik, George Perez....

Is really worth the effort for Marvel to make those tie-in or adaptaing the MCU into Marvel Comics? These days only comic book fans buy comics, i really don't see a casual buying a comic just because it ties into the MCU.

I really admire DC comics for not trying to bait people into buying comics just because they tie-in into the movies or making comic characters look like the movie version a thing that Marvel does A LOT. I feel like when DC makes a tie-in like the Riddler comic or Batman 89 it is really in favor of a good story and they rarely make tie-ins.

Marvel comics should focus on making good stories again, the main 616 universe is garbage and DC is really beating Marvel ass with DC K.O and the Absolute Universe.

@ImNotaBot - I think the creators of almost anything have the intention to make things people like and to make money but unfortunately, sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. Even things that were originally liked, overtime it can change and the reverse can happen. Originally it’s hated but then people’s feelings change. People hated then superior spiderman when it originally came out and now it’s one of the loved stories for that time.

@epc1122 - Yeah a agree i just think Marvel Comics should be doing their own thing just like DC. Adapting things of the MCU into the comics is not wroth it because casuals probably don't care about comics and true fans follow the comics because they are the true source material and not the other way around (with the MCU).

@ImNotaBot - I honestly don’t believe in “true” fans. The companies are setting themselves up for failure if they don’t at least attempt to bring in new fans. Some stories stick and resonate with the audience and sometimes they don’t but i don’t think it’d lack of effort. A lot of work goes into comics, tv, and movies and I don’t think the creators get enough credit.

Black Panther is the first MCU film after Doomsday in February 2027. Denzel Washington is playing a version of Tchalla that is older and its an alternate timeline in which TChalla didnt die.

It's a full circle moment for Denzel who birth Chadwicks career.

That's how Tchalla's son meets his father the way Tchalla went to the afterlife to meet Tchaka. Then it goes into secret wars.

Doom, in doomsday, gives everyone what they want: but he does it in a corrupted way that isnt sustainable. Which leads to the collapse and Secret wars Battleweorld.

Is it me or the headline make it seem like the series was gonna be called “The Rise of Doom” now rather then “Infamous Iron Man” while the former in reality is just the new subtitle for it?.

Anyway it is interesting whether intentional or not to have RDJ as Victor Von Doom when he’s already been Tony Stark given even their own history in the comics where I feel if Reed wasn’t there , the next big enemy for the former would have been the latter given their various similarities aswell as differences such as genius level intellect , armored suit but also Doom using magic while Tony doesn’t etc.

I really wish Marvel didn’t turn Doom evil again so quickly. Dr Doom having a 10-20 year run as an anti hero (similar to Magneto from the 80’s to 2000’s) would’ve been real interesting. I thought that was the point at the end of secret wars anyways.

Infamous Iron Man was good, not as good as Superior Spider-Man IMO, but still an interesting look at how Doom's arrogance would have him believe he could be a better hero than actual superheroes.
