One Of 2026's Most Highly Anticipated Sci-Fi Movies May Back Down From AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Next December

Avengers: Doomsday has already moved from next May to December, and it now shares a release date with one of 2026's biggest sci-fi movies. Which of them will back down? Well, it won't be The Avengers...

As of now, Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are both scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. It's a move that's unlikely to do either movie any favours, though it's hard to shake the feeling that "Dunesday," as it's been dubbed by fans, will see the Dune threequel suffer most.

Marvel Studios has no intention of backing down, and based on a World of Reel report, Denis Villeneuve's movie may end up arriving in theaters sooner than expected.

Dune: Part Three wrapped shooting last month, giving it close to 10 months to complete post-production. That makes a shift to October or November perfectly plausible, and the site has uncovered further evidence to suggest that might be the case.

They point to a recent interview with Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera, in which he said the next Dune movie "could be a possibility" for next September's event.

As the report, which is mostly speculative, points out, "If 'Dune 3' were released in December, odds are that it wouldn’t be premiering at Venice, which takes place during the first and second week of September. However, an October or November release date? A splash on the Lido seems much more plausible."

We'll see what happens, but when it comes to premium format screens, Avengers: Doomsday will surely be a priority. That won't be good for Dune: Part Three, so we'll see if and when Warner Bros. Discovery blinks.

While filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will soon shift focus to the next James Bond movie, we fully expect him to deliver with the conclusion to this trilogy. He's also assembled an all-star cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, and Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Doomsday officially stars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, and Robert Downey Jr. Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman all make their Avengers franchise debuts in the movie.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps leads Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn join them, as do X-Men franchise stars Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, with Deadpool & Wolverine star Channing Tatum.

The Russo Brothers direct the movie from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, with whom they previously collaborated on the Captain America and Avengers franchises. Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness's Michael Waldron is also working on the script.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive on December 17, 2027.

"Dunesday” is marketing no money can buy.

@Lisa89 - Imagine seeing both the same day. That'd be a solid 7.5 hours lol

@Lisa89 - I'm here for it. Open with Dune and the Avengers will be a nice, somewhat lighter pallet cleanser afterwards.

@grendelthing - I would suspect that they’re looking for a similar tone that Infinity War had, kinda light but much more serious in tone

@DarthKratos - Quality wise this is an undeniable statement. But box office wise, this was smart of them to move it. Dune doesn’t have cartoony CGI, quippy jokes every 30 seconds, and member berry cameos. It will 100% earn less at the box office but will without a doubt be the superior movie.

This may be the most jarring comment I have ever seen you post, 😆.

@KennKathleen - You are welcome for that journey. I was typing in a hurry. Avengers will earn more, but Dune will be the higher quality movie.

@DarthKratos - I view this as a major win. Looking forward to Dune3 far more than another avenger's cameo fest, so if it moves up, I am a happy camper.

It honestly just makes good business sense for either Dune or Avengers since 2 big movies coming out on the same day is bound to hurt atleast one if not both so if the former gets out of the way then so be it…

October/November would be best for Dune even if those months are somewhat crowded as of now with Doomsday being left as the sole release for Dec 18th (possibly the former since the first one came out then aswell).

Anyway , looking forward to both!!.

Really excited for Dune. Not very excited for Doomsday beyond one last hurrah with the Fox-Men crew

Gimme Dune 3 for a birthday present and Doomsday for a Christmas present. I am jazzed for them both.

I am also jazzed for a couple of silly Gunn movies even though there's no DCU Batman in sight. Okay. That's a lie. Dammit!

1. Dune Messiah coming earlier is amazing news.
2. It’ll be a better movie than Doomsday without a doubt.
3. Doomsday will earn more and would have cannibalized it if they were releasing same day
4. Hollywood will never create another Barbenheimer (most likely). That was such a unique situation. It ESPECIALLY won’t happen with 2 movies in the sci-fantasy genre both releasing. It would have to be 2 different genres for that magic to get recaptured.

They should call it ‘Dune, Where’s My Worm?’

Could see Dune move to November. Both previous parts were released in that month as well, so it fits well enough imo.

Also, right now I wouldn't call Captain America, Mr. Fantastic and Cyclops the Big Three, although I don't know who else it would be besides Black Widow.

I will always vote for Dune earlier if possible (would KILL on thanksgiving), but the concept of Dunesday would be amazing and I would take the kids out of school to double feature the hell out of this. Post COVID movie going data has shown that audiences are willing to come out for "events" (think Barbenheimmer, Beyonce/ Taylor Swift Concert movies, Sing Alongs (like KPOP Demon Hunters), etc.). The 2025 Marvel movies, as a whole, didn't do great at the box office and Dune I was a day and date release during COVID so those #s don't count, but Dune II was really kind of mediocre at the box office, at least domestically (Source: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt15239678/?ref_=bo_se_r_1). Dunesday could be a good thing for both franchises, but I am betting WB will flinch since they probably have the most to lose.
