BLACK PANTHER Director Ryan Coogler Reveals That Sony Blocked Him From Using Kraven The Hunter

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has revealed that Sony Pictures blocked him from using Kraven the Hunter in the 2018 movie and debunks a long-standing rumour about who was set to play the character.

It's no secret that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler wanted to use Kraven the Hunter as a villain in his Oscar-nominated 2018 movie. However, very little has ever been revealed about what role the sinister Spider-Man foe would've played.

Talking to Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, the filmmaker revealed that Marvel Studios had already chosen Erik Killmonger and Avengers: Age of Ultron's Ulysses Klaue as Black Panther's villains when he came on board.

However, when executives started wondering whether Klaue was the right fit, it was then that Coogler brought up an old favourite of his: Kraven.

"No. [Michael B. Jordan] was always gonna be Killmonger," Coogler said, dismissing speculation that the Creed star almost played Kraven. "When I took that job, Joe Robert Cole, who's my co-writer on both the Panthers, [he] had been working with Marvel and they had a line, so when I showed up, it was like, 'Hey, we have our villains. Our villains are Klaue and Eric Killmonger.' That had been decided upon."

"The outline of villains was Claw and Kilmonger, but they weren't sure. They weren't sure. Klaue felt slightly modular to them, and obviously, it was the great Andy Serkis, so I'm hyped to work with him," he continued. "[I] wanted to base it on the Christopher Priest run of Panther, and his run starts with Panther and Kraven in the kitchen. That's the first thing. It's Ross, Panther, and Kraven fighting in the Kitchen."

Rather than use Sergei Kravinoff as Black Panther's main villain, Coogler viewed him as a good fit for the role that Klaw ultimately plays. All that was left to do was ask Sony Pictures for permission to use the character.

"I'm a big Spider-Man fan, especially Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Kraven is in that. He's also great in the books," Coogler shared. "I was like, 'Yo, can I have Kraven in the movie?' They were like, 'We don't think so, but let us check.' So, they hit Sony, and Sony was like, 'Absolutely not.' They came back to me like, 'Yo, we can't do it.' So, I was like, 'Okay.'"

Even though Marvel Studios and Sony were working together at this point to share Spider-Man, it's not overly surprising that Kraven was off the table. He was one of several characters that the studio believed were good picks for a solo movie, likely explaining why he also wasn't used in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Kraven the Hunter was finally released in theaters last year, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson taking on the title role in an R-rated adaptation. The movie was a critical and commercial flop, and the character has now been shelved.

Had Coogler got his way, the villain could have been introduced in Black Panther, potentially setting the stage for Marvel Studios to continue his story in a future Spider-Man outing. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. As for Klaue, he was betrayed and killed by Killmonger, ending Serkis' run in the MCU.

Naw... It was best without Kraven. He would seem very random.

@Lokiwasright - But then you could have had him eventually face Spidey

@Lokiwasright - He would BUT if he was the one to be killed off by Killmonger early on and save Claw for another movie I'd have been cool with that as the odds of ever getting a decent Kraven adaption as a main villain or anything else in the MCU with Sony in control of who they allow to feature was slim. I mean Andy Serkis had little more than an extended cameo and being killed meant a LOT of lost potential for an IP Marvel still owned and could use as much as they wanted unlike most Spider-man villains Sony control the IP rights for.

What is it about so many superhero movies and killing off the lead villains? I always go back to Batman 89 and Nicholson’s Joker . With that one, I am thinking that was his guarantee of not coming back for a sequel although he could have just said, “no.”

@RolandD - I think it’s the case of these movies already being a truncated take on these characters that they want new villains & such for every film so best to kill off the previous one.

Also I’m sure it has to do with merchandising aswell.

It’s unfortunate that Klaue died since Serkis was fun in that role but it did make sense within the film.

@TheVisionary25 - I like to keep my options open. If they keep the villain alive, they don’t have to bring them back again, but they can. We might’ve seen Heath Ledger’s Joker come back if he had not died because he was certainly left alive at the end of the movie.

To think between this and NWH we could've seen Kraven in live action. Unfortunately now it seems like he's on the same shelf as Mr freeze where we might not see him at all.

@MCUKnight11 - man , the setup at the end of FFH was perfect for Kraven so it sucks that Watts even wanted him but Sony again wouldn’t allow it.

Regardless ,NWH was still quite good imo but still.

I hate it when a character be used because the studio have plans and then said plans turn to be either crap or none existant (I'm looking at you Green Lantern)

Smart move by Sony, they made so much money on their Kraven film, lol

Interesting…

Kraven as a secondary antagonist to Black Panther could be fun since as Coogler says , it has happened in the comics so [frick] Sony for interfering again in support of their own dumb ideas which ended up falling flat of its flat justifiably.

Also did not know Joe Robert Cole was already working on the BP script before Coogler even came on board the project hence the villains & such already being finalized to an extent since I thought Ryan brought him on…

Anyway , it’s also intriguing how much people like Kraven from the 90’s cartoon when he’s only a “villain” in his first appearance given that a serum he is administered by his fiancée after he is wounded saves his life but also drives him insane of which he is cured and even helps the likes of the Punisher in trying to cure Spider Man’s own mutation later on.

Once again, Sony only contributes to more disappointment. I’ve been on this site for YEARS. I remember when the majority thought the X-Men would never return to Marvel bc of Fox. They were wrong, and I’ve been saying for a long time now too, Disney just needs to buy Sonys movie division, period. They will regain the rights to hundreds of characters all tied to Spider-Man. They’ll make their money back within 2-3 movies, everything else beyond that will be profit. Look how much DP has made and that’s just one character, wait till the legit X-Men arrive. The age of mutants will be GOAT.

A recast T'challa vs a more accurate Namor would have been great

I struggle to believe it can be so hard to share these characters with some basic financial arrangement where each one has a negotiated price with Sony’s being added to Marvel’s movies and vice-versa. Casting and costume can stay with the rights owner. Surely it can only benefit both sides and the fans.

Aside from the Spider-Verse films, Sony hasn’t made one good Spidey-related decision without Marvel Studios since Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.

Sony can [frick] off. I can’t wait for the day when Disney buys Spider-Man back and everyone is under one roof.

Sony continues to be the most incompetent studio ever. They don’t deserve the IP they have and I wish they would sell it back already.

Kraven makes too much sense, not surprised then that it didn't happen. With that being said, Serkis as Klaue was fun to watch.

It does suck that we won't ever get Kraven in the MCU. Imagine a movie or two that included BP, Kraven, & Spidey directed by Coogler.

I don't think giving Kraven a 10 minute part before killing him off-screen is the best use of the character. At least Klaw is a BP character and returning from Avengers 2 so there's a little connective tissue there.
