Marvel has changed a lot since Kevin Feige started reporting to Disney. Starting with
Captain America: Civil War, Marvel has changed entirely, with better quality films and riskier storytelling, the company has evolved to become the best it has ever been. It was this change that brought the unapologetic atmosphere of
Black Panther, a cultural event so revolutionary, it surpassed
The Avengers at the domestic box office.
Before
Civil War, as the T'Challa character was being fit for film, Chadwick Boseman was very adamant about having an African accent. It was a surprise to him that it took Marvel convincing. Talking to an awards season podcast for The Hollywood Reporter Boseman offered some insight:
They felt that it was maybe too much for an audience to take. I felt the exact opposite — like, if I speak with a British accent, what’s gonna happen when I go home? It felt to me like a deal-breaker. I was like, ‘No, this is such an important factor that if we lose this right now, what else are we gonna throw away for the sake of making people feel comfortable?
Ultimately, Marvel made the right choice, and now we as fans are grateful.
