It's been clear for a while now that Black Panther is going to be a box office hit but after initial estimates rose from a $100 million opening weekend to $155 million - $170 million, the latest tracking details from Deadline actually point to a $180 million debut. In fact, the trade believes that it could even hit $200 million, a massive debut which would make it one of the biggest Marvel movies to date.
Apparently, distributors believe Black Panther will do unprecedented business in Atlanta, Baldwin Hills, and Harlem, a sign that it's going to draw a huge African-American audience. For the movie to hit these numbers, though, it will need to clear well over $20 million during tonight's preview screenings and then $75 million on Friday (including Thursday), $60 million on Saturday, and $40 million on Sunday.
If Black Panther doesn't hit $200 million, there will, of course, be those who discount it as a disappointment but even $150 million will be massive given those initial estimates and that's a big deal for a February release featuring an obscure comic book character. How much do you think the Ryan Coogler helmed movie will make over President's Day weekend? Let us know your thoughts below.
