The Captain America: The First Avenger screenwriters have revealed very interesting info regarding the plot cohesion of the Cap film and the Avengers film. In a panel at the Los Angeles Film Festival’s “Coffee Talk” series, Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus had the following to say:

Q: Since Marvel is setting up not only this franchise, but The Avengers too, what is the strangest note you got?
SM: It’s not even so much we get notes based on what the next Avengers project is going to be. I would just say it’s not even notes. The world is so interesting and there’s so much of it, 70-80 years of Marvel comics, you just have conversations where an executive will say, “Have you considered Modok?” And we think to ourselves, “The guy’s a floating head? How fabulous would that be if we can do that?” The depth of the world makes for some really interesting, weird conversations. As far as a specific strangest note, I don’t think I have one because from Marvel, mostly they’re good and they end up in the movie.

Q: With the Modok conversations, at what point do they get crushed by, “No, we can’t put that in the movie?”

SM: Well, at first, “We’ll save that for Captain American 2.” We’re sort of just opening up what are all the things we could be drawing from? So things like that come up.

Q: What did you get to do that you always wanted to do?

SM: There’s a train scene that I’m really proud of. I’m really excited about that. It’s all ours.

Q: Do you get to write the post-credits tag we all know will be there?

SM: Yes, that was us. That was tough and it went through a lot of drafts obviously, but yeah.

Q: Do you worry there’s origin story fatigue, since every comic book movie is doing the origin?

SM: I think there’s no fatigue if the story’s good. I don’t think that’s why people don’t go to the movies. Either they’re not good or not successful or appreciated. It’s whether they’re good or not. It’s not whether it’s a first. So I don’t think any comic book movie would necessarily be served by writing episode two instead of episode one unless that was so much better. I don’t think there’s an origin fatigue, I don’t.

Q: When you write the Steve Rogers scenes, do they assure you they’ve got the visual effects to do it so you can just write what you want?

SM: Oh yeah. We’ve done a number of CGI movies now and you just have to rely on people who are much better at this than you are and have a lot of experience in terms of making this lion realistic or making that guy’s head really look red or making that guy look 98 lbs. And they do. They do every time. I’m always amazed.

Q: But at the screenplay stage, they don’t know how they’re going to do it. So do they just say they’ll figure it out, you go write?

SM: Yeah, not on the first draft. We don’t have to worry. In our heads, he’s 98 lbs. just as in our heads that lion can talk. In our heads, that’s Peter Sellers playing that part. We don’t have to worry about that particularly on draft one and two. Then we’ll be in the room. That’s what’s exciting on Captain America, we’re in the room all the time where we go, “All right, is it going to be a head replacement? Is it going to be a different actor? Are we going to double cast this?” All the possibilities came up and they’re really smart guys, Chris Townsend particularly, would say, “All right, here’s how the best way to do it is for these particular shots.” It’s a big deal because that’s the first act.

Q: Is Captain America the last big one who hasn’t been done yet?

SM: Good question. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of other big ones. It depends where you rank people. They haven’t done a Flash yet in DC.

Q: Well, they haven’t even done Wonder Woman yet.

SM: They haven’t done a big screen Wonder Woman so there are certainly big characters on the DC side. Marvel, not just the Marvel Studio movies but the license to other studios, they’ve been at it for a few years now. In Marvel there’s 5,000 characters so there is going to be a law of diminishing returns. Is everyone going to go to a Luke Cage movie and are you going to make it for the same amount that you made Avengers for? There’s risk vs. reward.

Q: We know he comes into modern day for The Avengers, but is there room to go back to WWII?

SM: Well, our hope is that there is room and we’re negotiating how to do that now. The story will likely be in the present day. We’re experimenting with flashback elements for more period World War II stuff. I can’t say much more than that but we made it baggy enough to refer to more stories in the past.

Q: So you left gaps in Captain America 1 where you can always say something else was going on back then?

SM: Absolutely. He had more adventures than just the one you’re going to see in the movie.

Q: Do you know who the villain of Captain America 2 would be?

SM: It’s undetermined. I will pass that question, how about that?

Q: When would you be scheduled to work on a sequel?

SM: We’ve already made the deal so I was at Marvel last week. We’re talking and passing stuff back and forth all the time. They just sent me a big PDF file of comics.

I don't see there being to many Cap sequels. Too me, he only has like 5 good villians. The rest are lame

This may be the coolest question-and-answer concerning a superhero franchise that I've heard all year. Maybe ever:

"Q: So you left gaps in Captain America 1 where you can always say something else was going on back then?

SM: Absolutely. He had more adventures than just the one you’re going to see in the movie. "

Trudy - I was thinking the same thing about 5 villains! Haha! You could even make a Quadrilogy!

Nailbiter - Make a change to the script because Steve Rogers never wants to give his powers back!

@TayDee - A bad rogues gallery has little to do with sequels. Iron Man, for example, has one of the most unimpressive rogues galleries out there, and that doesn't = less Iron Man sequels.
Hell, in IM2 they needed to combine 2 villains just to create an interesting enough character (Ivan+Vanko)
WellDrawn
WellDrawn - 6/20/2011, 2:07 PM
@Intruder - One thing that pissed me off about Whiplashes final fight in IM2 (aside from being far too short) was his completely forgettable final armor. If he truly is a combo of Whiplash + Crimson Dynamo, why not at least paint his armor red/put a star on his chest? The fight may have been 5 seconds long, but at least it would've been a memorable 5 seconds...

Wolfman reference? Wow, FackMarvel, that came out of nowhere and yet could be construed as philosophically deep.

My choice for villain in a Cap sequel: Baron Zemo. I think what they have done with him in Earth's Mighiest Heroes could translate over on the big screen well.
TayDee
TayDee - 6/20/2011, 2:52 PM
Ok in the comics he has many formidable villians, but most of them won't translate well into a film. Villains that look ridiculous like Kang the Conqueror, Arnim Zola, Baron Zemo, and MODOK wont work unless there look is changed dramatically.

And I doubt they'll use another organization like A.I.M becuse HYDRA is already in it trying to take over the world, and A.I.M will essentially want to do the same thing.

The only thing I can see him going against is Sin or the Winter Soldier because they're easy to translate.

interesting that they mention MODOK, cuz, to me he's one of the ALL-TIME most ridiculously looking CB characters, which makes him one of the most anticipated one to be adapted to a live action treatment. the more seemingly impossible to adapt the more I want to see HOW they're gonna do it and make it successful to be translated from the comic book pages to the movie.

so far, the hard ones that they've pulled off are: GL's Hector Hemmond (i wonder if marvel's ever gonna do The Leader in a future Hulk or Avengers movie, now that a villain with a big noggin has been done on the big screen already without looking stupid), all the Asgardians, Banshee and Sinestro (i mean, c'mon...a pink David Niven-looking baddie?? but, they pulled it off with Mark Strong in the part).

so, yeah..if they can pull off a live-action MODOK without causing the audience to piss in their pants from laughing, that'd be a great achievement.

Cheer up DC fans,The Avengers will come in forth place next year because of the cheese factor of too many styles,(magic,Hi-tech,Bio-engineering,poss aliens)forced together.

Order of CBM dominance in 2012.
1.The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan's last Bat film and 4 year wait)
2.The Amazing Spider-Man (5 year break in franchise)
3.Superman:Man of Steel (6 year break in franchise and Supes actually gets to fight)
4.The Avengers (basically cont same storyline for 4 years)
5.The Wolverine (3 years after first bad film.1 year after first class)
6.Ghost Rider:Spirit of Vengence (stink of first film)

It's going to be ok. The big guns will buy us a year while DC/WB brings in a real film maker(Nolan) to oversee all DC properties. That guy was able to market Inception to the public. A character like The Flash should be no problem.

@blkyank - Corn flakes was used to make sure there was no sexual thinking; It's true!

Right, before I go off track we were talking about this great post. Captain America has all those chessy villains but these writers seem to be like 'Chessy please, well make believable' and guess what? They have!

Can't wait for this movie; Oddly enough we (Australia) get this before Green Lantern, sadly enough....

I would love to see a Cap trilogy, with the first one obviously being all set in World War II, look at Cap's origin and evolution into the Cap we know and love while he battles Red Skull and his HYDRA agents

Then the sequel could have half of it set in World War II with Cap going up against Zemo who is concocting an evil plan. Zemo is defeated before he can put his plan into action. The second half of the movie could be set in present day after the Avengers. Cap has become a special agent of SHIELD who deals with superpowered & the most crazy supervillains who are too small for the Avengers but too big for normal SHIELD agents. Cap is continuing to get used to present day when the grandson of Zemo appears to continue his grandfather's legacy. So the story could be, Cap continues to deal with his unfreezing in present day while also dealing with the legacy of a villain from his past.

Third one could have more of a Cap who is closer to the current comics version of Cap. He is used to present day but continues to fight threats to the world. Maybe AIM and MODOK could be the villains, maybe feature the Winter Soldier too

and theres something I never realized, every superhero movie is an origin story this year. Green Lantern, Thor, Cap & X-Men. At least next year its possibly only Spidey & Superman that will have origin stories and Im guessing they will only be Incredible Hulk-style origins as both comic book fans AND general audiences know their origins. Show most of it in the opening credits but flashback to it during the movie, I hope
