Ask comic book fans about the "Superior" Spider-Man and you're likely to get two very different reactions. For some, it's one of the greatest and most compelling eras in the web-slinger's history; for others, it was a low point for the character and a story they're not anxious to see revisited in any way.

Well, Marvel Comics has now confirmed that a new Superior Spider-Man series is on the way with original writer Dan Slott returning to the title.

For those of you who may not recall (or would simply rather forget), in the build-up to Amazing Spider-Man #700, Doctor Octopus successfully enacted a plan to switch his and Peter Parker's minds. That left Spidey trapped in a body that was dying, and after failing to defeat Ock in his far more powerful form, the wall-crawler died.

That left Otto Octavius as the Marvel Universe's Spider-Man and he proceeded to deal out lethal justice, form Parker Industries, and attempt to seduce Mary Jane Watson in what proved to be one of the publisher's most uncomfortable plot beats.

Luckily, a piece of Peter's mind survived and he ultimately regained control. Otto would go on to continue being Spider-Man in a cloned body but later returned to his old self as the villainous Doctor Octopus.

It's unclear whether this new take will be set during his original stint as the Superior Spider-Man or he'll regain the moniker by other means.

The announcement has generated a lot of discussion, however, and it sounds like more details will be revealed soon. Slott is currently writing a Spider-Man series that's introduced the widely ridiculed Spider-Boy.
