X-MEN: Alex Ross Puts His Own Spin On Jim Lee's Classic Cover Art To Mark Team's 60th Anniversary

Marvel Comics has enlisted Alex Ross to create a jaw-dropping new variant cover to celebrate the X-Men's 60th anniversary, and it picks up right where Jim Lee left off in 1991. Take a closer look here...

This year, Marvel Comics will honour 60 awe-inspiring years of both The Avengers and X-Men. To mark the occasion, we're getting new comic titles, collections, and much more, with the celebrations set to continue in August courtesy of legendary artist Alex Ross.

He's going to lend his talents to a number of variants, including a piece that pays homage to Jim Lee's iconic X-Men #1 cover from 1991.

According to the publisher, the first part of both covers can be collected this August with Uncanny Avengers #1, the upcoming title that sees Earth's Mightiest Heroes and mutantkind protecting the Marvel Universe side by side (which is a throwback to a few years ago when heroes from both teams assembled under Rick Remender's watch).

"With the X-Men piece, I didn't originally make the design. I copied an existing classic cover design that everybody would know and connect to," Ross explains. "The X-Men piece is showing an accentuation of the action, where it's a split-second difference later."

"Wolverine is completing a full attack swipe and everybody is attacking harder. I added in the bit with lightning coming from Storm, which would be a split second of movement."

Making this a "sequel" of sorts to Lee's cover is a genius move and we're sure you'll agree that this is pretty much exactly what the X-Men should look like in the MCU.

Both the character and costume designs are darn near perfect, and it's about time the heroes get to wear something a little more exciting than black leather in live-action. With Deadpool 3 set to take place in the MCU, the hope among fans is that Hugh Jackman's Wolverine will finally don a comic-accurate suit.
