Doctor Strange may not have been the runaway success that Guardians of the Galaxy unexpectedly proved to be, but for the first instalment of a franchise featuring a character 90% of people had probably never heard of, the movie has been a huge critical and commercial hit. Despite the Blu-ray release being right around the corner, it's still making money in Japan, leading it to a big benchmark.

That is $669.7 million worldwide (after another $2.1 million this weekend, taking its total in Japan to $9.5 million), and while it may not sound like a big deal, that figure means it's passed Man of Steel's $668 million. So, yeah, the Sorcerer Supreme just beat Superman, a bona fide pop culture icon!

As of right now, Doctor Strange is the sixth biggest superhero origin story of all-time, but don't feel too bad for Warner Bros. and the DC Films Universe as Suicide Squad's $745 million cume is still a big win for them!
