The Fantastic Four: First Steps finally did right by Marvel's First Family, and more importantly for many fans, delivered a comic-accurate take on Galactus.
The Devourer of Worlds previously appeared in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, but was depicted as a cloud. The creative decision haunted fans and left them waiting the better part of two decades to see a proper portrayal of the iconic villain.
Last year's reboot delivered that, thanks to a mix of practical and CG visual effects. Now, a new behind-the-scenes photo from The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Family Portraits: Photos From The Set, shows us how a particularly memorable Galactus moment was shot for real with actor Ralph Ineson.
In the movie, when Galactus first arrives on Earth, he pauses a moment, pulls up a tree, and smells the dirt below. It's a scene that's generated a lot of discussion, though the implication seems to be that the towering baddie was getting a "taste" of his eventual meal.
Seeing how this was accomplished is undeniably impressive, and most walked away from The Fantastic Four: First Steps wanting more Galactus.
The movie ended with both him and the Silver Surfer being left stranded on the other side of the universe. The comic book Galactus has come back from much worse, but with the Fantastic Four likely to make a permanent home on Earth-616 after Avengers: Secret Wars, it remains to be seen how he would potentially be reinvented for the main MCU.
Galactus plays a pretty unique role in the Secret Wars comic, so we also wouldn't discount the possibility of Ineson reprising the role before the Multiverse Saga ends.

In our review of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, we concluded, "The Fantastic Four is an exceptional introduction to the MCU’s First Family, and thanks to a Jack Kirby-infused feel that’s unlike anything we’ve seen before, it proves to be a quintessential superhero movie with Marvel Studios at its brilliant best.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they face their most daunting challenge yet.
Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.
The movie is now available on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Disney+.
