WICKED: FOR GOOD's Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed As Reviews Point To A Satisfying, "Stretched-Out" Finale

The first reviews for Wicked: For Good are positive, but not as glowing as those for Wicked. With these early verdicts comes a Rotten Tomatoes score, and that's so far falling short of its predecessor.

The reviews for Wicked: For Good have landed, and while the movie has 97% on the audience-generated "Popcornmeter" following last night's fan screenings, critics seem somewhat less enthused.

With 88 verdicts counted, the sequel sits at a "Fresh" 74% on the Tomatometer. That's not a bad result, though it does somewhat fall short of Wicked's "Certified Fresh" 88% score. Unless that score increases to 75% and above, Wicked: For Good will not receive that same badge of honour.

As many fans of the musical feared when it was announced that this Wicked adaptation would be a two-parter, it appears the main complaint is that the second half's story simply isn't strong enough to justify an entire movie. The cast, visuals, and songs receive plenty of praise, but despite delivering a satisfying ending, some critics appear underwhelmed.

Even with a lack of overwhelmingly positive, glowing reviews, Wicked: For Good will almost certainly be one of 2025's biggest box office hits.

Those who enjoyed the first movie are bound to want to see the follow-up on the big screen to learn how the story ends, while the property has likely picked up plenty of new fans since Wicked was first released last November.

The Hollywood Reporter writes, "[Ariana] Grande floods it with so much feeling that it humanizes and enriches the character and, by extension, the whole movie." Variety, meanwhile, notes, "The film fixes a common complaint of the show, giving the pair more scenes (and songs) together in this final stretch, which now feels like a robust tale unto itself."

The Wrap was less enthused. "There hasn’t been a pre-planned 'Part Two' this disappointing since the second half of Andy Muschietti’s 'It,'" explains the trade. "At least nobody projectile vomits on Jeff Goldblum to the tune of Juice Newton’s 'Angel of the Morning.'"

In fact, there are quite a few mixed reviews. "Despite stellar work from Erivo and Grande," AwardsWatch shared, "Wicked: For Good can’t justify its existence as its own separate outing." Slant Magazine concurred: "The film is stretched out, breathless, and never really emotionally affecting, even on the level of nostalgia."

In Empire's review, it's said, "Not quite over the rainbow, then, but just enough of its colours and candour to get by." That seems to be the prevailing opinion, as even the "Fresh" reviews aren't overly enthusiastic.

"It may not have a climax that defies gravity in the way the first film did," says We Live Entertainment"but it still works on an emotional level enough to be wonderful in its own way." Awards Buzz counters, "'Wicked: For Good' is an epic and emotionally satisfying conclusion," with Vulture pointing out, "It brings the Wicked cycle to a surprisingly satisfying conclusion, at least for now."

Still, io9 has a different take. "There are moments where the performances and visuals really hit home and bring it all together. But, more often than not, we were left disappointed at how little in the film was as memorable or special as that first part."

As IndieWire puts it, "The things that missed the mark the first time, well, they still do. The things that worked in 'Wicked'? They still do, but only a clock-tick better."

Last year’s global cinematic cultural sensation, which became the most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time, now reaches its epic, electrifying, emotional conclusion in Wicked: For Good.

Directed once again by award-winning director Jon M. Chu and starring the spectacular returning cast, led by Academy Award-nominated superstars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the final chapter of the untold story of the witches of Oz begins with Elphaba and Glinda estranged and living with the consequences of their choices.

Wicked: For Good arrives in theaters on November 21.

It seems like it’s largely more of the same, just a smidge darker. So if you liked the first, you’ll like this. If you didn’t like the first, you won’t like this. Kinda what I’d hope from a sequel- more of what I enjoyed before.

I haven’t read any of the books, seen the play, or the first movie, nor listened to any of the songs, and I can tell you exactly how it turns out.

@LenSpiderman - There are considered to be at most NINE types of plots that all stories fall into (according to Christopher Booker), the consensus TENDS to be six main narratives and when aimed heavily towards kids the list tends to get a LOT shorter in the main (In 1959, Foster-Harris used three basic buckets to define story — happy ending, unhappy ending, and tragedy and kid friendly stuff is almost always happy ending). So well done guessing which one this is from so many potential choices, lol, wonder if you managed to guess the correct one or not :D

@Apophis71 - I didn’t have to guess. I’ve seen wizard of oz. It’s hard to surprise anyone with the ending of a prequel when the original story is one of the most popular movies of all time.

There's something seriously unsettling about Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in their interviews.

At one point Erivo started panicking when she heard a helicopter above her.

Don't like the idea of the witch being good and everyone else is just wrong and misinformed about her. Would have preferred a story about her turning wicked instead of being falsely accused as being wicked. I've never seen the play or read the book, but judging by the trailer, it looks like the story continues that way. And if it does, then there's no way it can be canon because she's clearly evil in the original, trying to kill Dorothy, her dog, and her friends. And at that point, there's really no reason to even care about this.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - It ISN'T canon and never was, it used known fictional characters to study how a person born good could, due to extreme circumstances, become a 'terrorist leader' considered by almost all in world a two dimensional evil villain. The author wanted to explore the concepts of your Hitler/Bin Laden types oft thought of as pure one dimensional evil and the whole nature V nurture stuff without it being a dry exploration of IRL historical figures.

It is more a study how two friends navigate living in a totalitarian state fueled by political propaganda ending up on opposing sides than it is anything close to a canon version of the original books or any prior film adaption of them. It simply uses the well known world from the original musical film/books to try to be a fun and entertaining way to tell that sort of story for all ages. Dorothy simply gets caught up in the middle of all that but her narrative/motivations basicaly unchanged from the film we all recall hence why she isn't a focus to the point of opting not to show her face.

There have however been other films/books that are, or at least trying to be, close to canon doing the whole how the Witch DID become evil rather than this more her percieved as such whilst trying to bring down the REAL villains of the world (ie Madame Morrible and the Wizard of Oz).

Totaly fair if for anyone this isn't their kind of story/film however and either skip or try to watch and not like it at all.

There is however something key to the circumstances of her birth and after her 'death' that paints it all in a differing light to how anyone who doesn't know that would percieve the narrative to be. Sans knowing that I get your critique of it in the trying to paint a villain as simply 'mis-understood', as that CAN ring hollow for most when attempted but that added aspect makes it less that and makes it VERY clear who the true villains ALWAYS were (IF that lands for anyone is down to your own PoV however, all views fair).

@Apophis71 - Very good insight. Thanks. I'm still curious to see how it's all going to play out. I enjoyed the first one more than I thought I would lol.

Saw it last night in a packed Dolby early screening. I was really satisfied how they tied all of the Wizard of Oz plot points together. Paramount [frick]ed up releasing The Running Man now. They had an empty October to squeeze some lemons, now it's going to get trampled by this and Zootopia 2. 1 billion is the floor for Wicked For Good, 2 Billie for Zootopia 2. Which will lead into another 2 Billie for Avatar. And people say theaters are dead hahaha. Tards

I was at the premiere yesterday, it’s pretty meh. The wizard of oz stuff is rushed when it should have been a big focus. This first movie is better.

It is pretty well known that the first half of the play is stronger than the second half. Seems that may still hold true with this. I’m still excited to see it. First one was surprisingly really good.

@DrCigarettes - the About page says “In 2008, CBM expanded its coverage to include all Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror related properties, but retains it's main focus upon comic book movies.”

This falls under a fantasy related property, regardless of it being a musical. This isn’t some new change, it’s been nearly 20 years of the site reporting on stuff like this.

Maybe this site isn’t what you’re looking for if you only want comic book movie news? Although there doesn’t seem to be that many decent ones focused on just that anymore, unfortunately. If you find a decent site, genuinely let me know
