Masters Of The Universe: Dolph Lundgren Reacts To Reboot's Disappointing Box Office Haul

Masters of the Universe has struggled to make much of an impact at the box office, and original He-Man, Dolph Lundgren, has now weighed in with his thoughts on the reboot's struggles.

Masters of the Universe opened to mostly positive reviews (68% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an enthusiastic response from He-Man fans. Unfortunately, that didn't translate to ticket sales, and the movie sits squarely in "flop" territory after making only $103 million since opening on June 5.

There is some hope for fans, though, as Amazon could choose to forge ahead with a sequel if the reboot does well on its streaming platform, Prime Video. If anything, that $100 million is a mere bonus for the company before Masters of the Universe joins its expanding streaming catalogue.

Still, the movie will lose money, and it's going to be tough to convince any executive to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a follow-up.

Original He-Man, Dolph Lundgren, recently spoke with ComicBook.com (via SFFGazette.com) and was asked to share his take on the movie's disappointing box office performance (the legendary actor makes a cameo appearance alongside Nicholas Galitzine).

"Yeah, I was a bit disappointed. I mean, everybody told me it’s going to do great," he said. "I’m not a huge believer in looking at the box office and that influencing how I feel that much emotionally about the picture. But I did think about it like, 'Oh, okay. That was strange that didn’t do better.'"

"And I don’t know why that is. They did a lot of marketing, they did a lot of press," Lundgren continued. "I was part of it, some of it. I don’t know where it’s at now; I mean, I think it did fairly well overseas as well. I’m not sure what that means really."

"Will Nick be signing swords for 40 years, like I have been? I don’t know. I mean, it’s hard to gauge movies by the box office as well," he added. "Sometimes you have a huge box office hit that becomes a classic, or sometimes it makes a lot of money, but nobody cares 20 years later. And there’s also the other one, the other version where it didn’t do that well, but people care a lot, you know, 50 years later."

What the future holds in store for Masters of the Universe remains to be seen. With Galitzine among those thought to be on Amazon's radar for the next James Bond, some have wondered whether his stint as He-Man was a means of opening the door to bigger and better things.

However, the movie ended by setting up a meeting between He-Man and his sister, She-Ra, so the potential is there to continue the story and explore more of Eternia down the line, if Amazon chooses to.

In Masters of the Universe, director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia, where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto).

To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

The supporting cast includes Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, Stephen Adentan as Moss Man, James Wilkinson as Mekaneck, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto.

Masters of the Universe is now playing in theaters.

@Feralwookiee - Josh is so [frick]in bias man. The dude never went this hard when a couple of MCU movies bombed. Ultimate Disney shill. If he could suck Kevin Feigie's hairy stinking balls in front of his wife for 2 dollars. He would.

Man, I'm honestly kind of sad that Masters of the Universe didn't do better. I went into it expecting to like it, but not expecting much more than that. The trailers looked okay, some of the creative choices had me scratching my head, and I figured it'd be one of those movies I'd watch once and move on from. Instead, I had a blast.

For two hours I got to sit there and watch He-Man, Skeletor, Eternia, swords, magic, monsters, and all the crazy fantasy stuff that made me love this franchise in the first place. I learned the extended lore I had no idea about surrounding MOTU. It wasn't perfect, but it was fun. The kind of fun that reminded me of being a kid sitting in front of the TV on Saturday morning. I walked out of the theater already thinking about a sequel. Seriously, I wasn't thinking, "Well, that was okay." I was thinking, "Alright, when do we get the next one?"

So seeing the box office numbers and hearing all the doom and gloom afterward has been a real disappointment. Maybe He-Man just isn't a big enough franchise anymore. Maybe there aren't as many fans left as I thought. Maybe younger audiences don't have the same connection to these characters that a lot of us grew up with. I don't know. What I do know is that for years I've listened to people say Hollywood needs more fantasy, more adventure, more fun, more heroes. Then a movie comes along that gives me exactly that, and hardly anyone seems to show up. That's the part that stings. Because for a little while, it felt like He-Man was back. It felt like Eternia had a future on the big screen. And now I'm sitting here wondering if we're ever going to get to see the rest of the story. Maybe we will. I hope so.

But if this really ends up being a one-and-done movie, that's going to be a shame. Not because it was perfect, but because it felt like the start of something that could have become really special. And as a lifelong fantasy nerd, I can't help feeling a little sad about that.

@BadgerThorkin - Forbes is saying 'Despite the theatrical losses, Amazon is reportedly eyeing a sequel as they prioritize the franchise to drive streaming subscriptions on Prime Video'

So i hope that is true as i agree with everything you said, it wasnt perfect, but it was very good. I hope we get a sequel as well as a spinoff of she-ra that is maybe even part of the sequel.

@BadgerThorkin - I loved this flick and Dolph’s the man, but I’m not sure we’ll see more MOTU after this.

@BadgerThorkin - Yeah. As a child of the 80s this movie hit all the right notes for me. It's also the first time I can say that Jared Leto actually stole the show for once, as Skeletor :-)

It's a He-Man movie made for the people who grew up loving the characters. They made the appropriate amount of fun of the sillier aspects of the cartoon, and it never once took itself too serious. So the hardcore ride or die fans likely didn't like how light it was. Those of us who grew up with it, had the toys as kids, and looked back on the cartoon fondly probably loved it. For my kids who I brought, it was fun enough. I have been telling people that it's not a great movie, but it is a damn near perfect He-Man movie made in the current age. I could tell these people love the property as much as I did growing up. I hope they make a sequel, I think it's deserving. Skeletor nearly stole the entire show...I absolutely loved this movie and had a blast watching it.

I still have yet to see the film so I do blame myself a bit for not contributing to the box office but oh well , it is what it is…

I have heard many good things about the film though so I’m excited to check it out on streaming when it comes out.

However the reason it failed was that MOTU just isn’t a brand that appeals much to people outside fans of the 80’s cartoons aswell as those who remember the 2002 cartoon & beyond like myself which is unfortunate because it’s so cool and has potential.

I do hope it is remembered fondly as time progresses and more see it to the point where it becomes a cult classic , that would be sweet!!.

The 80's movie is complete garbage and the only reason he's still signing swords 40 years later is because of nostalgia-ridden tasteless man-children. Meanwhile the new movie was excellent and Amazon have already confirmed they're continuing with it as a franchise.

@WEAPONXOXOXO - If characters with mixed-reviewed movies were instantly canceled then this little known character called The Hulk would've never been seen in a movie ever again after he flopped twice in 5 years.

P.S. this is a He-Man article, go post your attention-seeking garbage A.I. cryfest elsewhere.

It will in no way lose money. Anything earned theatrically is gravy. Amazon spends tens of billions a year on content. The Tomorrow War had a 200 mil budget and won't do near the streaming numbers MOTU will.

It's simple, my 6 and 4 year old daughters, as soon as they hear May's theme song from a video of the movie I'm watching on my phone, run to me asking, "Is that He-Man???" The younger one even dressed up as the Sorceress the other day, and the older one already asked for the Cringer Funko Pop. Amazon/MGM has achieved something that many studios and production companies are struggling to accomplish these days, they've reignited the discussion around a brand that's been dormant for far too long. If they and Mattel know how to do things right, they're going to make a lot of money from merchandising and subscriptions...
