Erotic thriller/slasher movie Bone Lake is now in theaters, and director Mercedes Bryce Morgan discussed a number of topics during a new interview with Collider, including the movie's graphic sex scenes, and the shocking ending.

Major spoilers follow.

The movie begins with two couples, Sage (Maddie Hasson) and Diego (Marco Pigossi) and Will (Alex Roe) and Cin (Andra Nechita), double booking an Airbnb and deciding to keep their reservations and spend the weekend together (never a good idea).

It turns out that Will and Cin actually own the property, and have been luring couples there in order to play on their insecurities and seduce them into cheating on each other... before brutally murdering them. Oh yeah, they also happen to be brother and sister who have been involved in an incestuous relationship for many years.

In the end, Sage and Diego manage to turn the tables on their attackers, first dispatching Will with a chainsaw, and then ensuring Cin meets her end at the bottom of the titular lake after being diced by a boat propeller.

Morgan was asked about the movie's sex scenes, and whether the cast had any reservations.

"I think it's just that everyone was down. Because this movie script, it's something where you could be sent as an actor, and you go, 'They want me to do what?' Or, 'Oh my God, what are they asking of me?' Most of the cast are people that we worked with before. For example, Maddie [Hasson] was in my first movie, and then Alex [Roe] and Marco Pigossi both had worked with the producers before. Then Andra Nechita is very new. I also was like, 'I need someone to commit as Cin. Who is down to clown?'"

The filmmaker also explained how the climactic boat scene came together.

"I always thought that the boat scene at the end would be the hardest, and it's funny because the entire time we were on set, I kept telling people, 'Guys, we don't have enough time to shoot this.' It’s a two-page day, and we had some other six-page days, and I'm like, “This day is crazy.” Because you get stunts and you get water and everything is happening. And the funniest thing happened, that was the worst but best thing: we had an actual storm when we were having our fake storm. It's funny because one of the producers came up to me like, 'Mercedes, look, this is a Jurassic Park level of water that we're getting for free. This is amazing!' But then it rained too much and we were in a foot of water, and people just started slipping and sliding within the span of five minutes. Our stunt person slipped and broke their finger, and then we dropped a $20,000 lens in the lake, and we're like, 'Shut it down! We’ve got to shut it down.' And so we ended up reshooting the boat scene in a soundstage in L.A. But it was awesome because I got more time to do it, right? So I was like, 'This is awful,' and then I'm like, 'Hell yeah!'”

Finally, in a separate interview with Polygon, the filmmaker touches on the movie's bizarre ending, which sees Sage and Diego laughing together while covered in the blood of the people they just brutally murdered.

“If you go through that situation with someone where you go through a murderous bloodbath, how do you come out of that? What do you do as a person? And so I wanted to capture all of the moments there together where it's this euphoria of ‘thank goodness’ and ‘are we getting what we've always wanted, but what the [frick] just happened? What the [frick] do we do now?’ And just that set in of reality of ‘what does that mean for us now?’”

“A couple’s romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate is upended when they are forced to share the mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple. In this darkly hilarious and seductive horror story, a dream getaway spirals into a nightmarish maze of sex, lies, and manipulation, bringing terrifying secrets to light and triggering a bloody battle for survival.”

As you might expect, Bone Lake has been rated R for strong bloody violence, grisly images, sexual content, graphic nudity, language throughout, and some drug use.

I feel like the only horror franchise that has made Sex and Murder a trope is Friday the 13th. Everything else just doesn't hit the same.

@SonOfAGif - A Nightmare on Elm Street? Hellraiser?

Is this a CBM?

Apophis71 - 10/9/2025, 6:17 AM
@Fogs - No, which is why it is a FearHQ article, but the better articles by various measures on all the sister sites oft get bumped up onto the main news page on the CBM part of the website as of all the sister site it is the one with the most traffic and active comment section. NOT that the main, CBM part of the site has only been limited to being about CBM's for a LONG time anyway :D

Sounds like a great plot until the murder spree. Talk about an overreaction, sheesh.

"it's something where you could be sent as an actor, and you go, 'They want me to do what?' Or, 'Oh my God, what are they asking of me?'"

Might be me, but I fail to see why this is a positive thing

@bkmeijer1 - It isn't the way I read it, which is probably why most the cast where ones they'd worked with before thus would know they'd more likely be OK with such things. IE The implication seemed to be that he gets how negative that reaction IS and how negative directors making actors do things they are uncomfortable is thus more carefull with their selection process for picking the cast and/or in ensuring the actors are OK on doing that kind of stuff and fully onboard with the script.

@Apophis71 - guess that makes sense. Still, I might be on the fence because as of now I can't really think of any movie that sold me on showing sex as a necessary thing.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 10/9/2025, 8:25 AM
@bkmeijer1 - For sure, can think of some movies where the sex was an important part of the narrative such as Fatal Attraction, but that isn't the same as saying SHOWING the sex is a necessary thing. It is a tricky line to draw in most mainstream films as sometimes showing too little can undermine a narrative, too much not required and more a crutch to sell tickets for ALL the wrong reasons.

The maths slightly differs with horror however as sex CAN be a far bigger part of the narrative even if implied undertones rather than onscreen graphic like the entire subtext of Dracula and a lot of other gothic fiction. That and selling horror CAN be WAY more on how much blood, gore, nudity and sex etc over and above the actual narrative (and NOT saying that is a good thing, just a decent market share for all of that).

bkmeijer1 - 10/9/2025, 12:15 PM
@Apophis71 - don't get me started on gore either. Maybe r-rated movies just aren't for me, but clearly there is market for it (and I'm not saying this isn't a bad thing imo).
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 10/9/2025, 1:17 PM
@bkmeijer1 - More of a good psychological thriller person myself, no sex or gore required but fine with either if they fit the narrative well. That said there are times when I'm up for a little plot erotic horror type of affair AS LONG as it doesn't take itself too seriously.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 10/9/2025, 4:11 PM
@Apophis71 - psychologic stuff is way more intriguing imo. But yeah, otherwise it shouldn't take itself serious (which with a name like Bone Lake, probably doesn't either)

What does this have to do with comic book movies?
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 10/9/2025, 7:32 AM
@CristianE - Nothing, new here?

Also this was originaly put up in the horror section sister site FearHQ (ie this website has MULTIPLE subsections, comics only being one of them all be it the primary entry point for most), simply got bumped up to the main news section covering content from ALL the sister sites. Back in the early days of the CBM part however there wasn't as much comic related content so you'd get a lot of actor/writer/director from a well known CBM's new non CBM project type articles when less specificaly CBM news to report on (or Wrestler cosplays a CBM character kinda stuff) which ultimately resulted in this primary section not being limited to JUST being about comic book movies over a decade ago.

This article is ABSURD. Spoilers are one thing, but this actually makes a point to give away the ENTIRE PLOT of the film, including the ending, in detail. Not only above and beyond “spoilers,” it was completely unnecessary. I can see spoiling the ending since much of the article discusses that, but the rest is ridiculous. lol I actually found it offensive to anyone who might have had an interest in seeing the film. If I were the studio I’d be coming after this with a take-down notice.

Crazy. If you’re going to do this, it deserves a special warning. I’m glad it wasn’t a film I cared about, or I’d be pretty pissed.

Apophis71 - 10/9/2025, 8:32 AM
@EducatedDefense - The film was released over a year ago, bit late in the day for anything to be considered a spoiler realy, if anyone hasn't seen it already they were unlikely to have any interest in ever doing so at this point UNLESS interest piqued due to an article exactly like this one.

In other headline news… is the newer user that’s policing this thread a confirmed addition alias of Josh/Mark/etc?

Regardless of how sister sites work, this article doesn’t belong on CBM….

Apophis71 - 10/9/2025, 9:39 AM
@ImBatman4realz - Who you talking about? Also Josh and Mark don't own or control the site let alone police it as that is almost entirely Nate these days, and don't think Mark has ever used an alt unlike Josh who used to use several (used to be more mods but now basicaly only Nate and his partner I believe). I've been a reader of the site basicaly since it first launched and my first ID created to talk about the Nolan Batman films and Xmen before I'd even watched Iron Man back in the 00's, this is only my second ever ID after I lost my first one when I took time out for a few months from online discourse for health reasons.
