QUEENS OF THE DEAD: Tina Romero's "Big Gay Zombie Movie" Gets A New Poster & Trailer

The late, great George A. Romero is widely credited as the originator of the zombie horror genre with his Night of the Living Dead trilogy, and his daughter, Tina Romero, is set to continue her father's legacy by putting her own unique spin on the undead apocalypse in Queens of the Dead, which is set to hit theaters just in time for Halloween on October 24, 2025.

The first trailer was released last month (see below), and Out Magazine has now debuted the first official poster art.

"I am his kid. There's no denying it. And he has influenced me greatly," Romero told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. "And this is his monster, this is his genre. I had fun doing my little Romero nods throughout the film, and we have some good ones."

"The zombie apocalypse is such a rich sandbox to play in when it comes to social commentary. I can't be my dad's daughter without making an attempt at saying something with zombies," she continued. "I did want this to be a film in which I am paying homage to the world and the monster he created, but I'm also introducing my own voice. It's very much not a film he would make, but it is using his vocabulary and is playing by his rules. As far as the queer element, on one hand, I just feel like the gays need a zombie film. It's time that we get to have a big gay zombie movie."

According to the synopsis, “a zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, where an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty undead.”

Queens of the Dead stars Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Margaret Cho (Fire Island), Brigette Lundy-Paine (I Saw The TV Glow) and Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story). The cast also includes Nina West (Drag Race), Jaquel Spivey (Mean Girls), Tomas Matos (Fire Island), Quincy Dunn-Baker (No Hard Feelings), Becca Blackwell (Bros), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther), Dominique Jackson (Pose), Riki Lindhome (Knives Out), and Eve Lindley (Bros).

I’m genuinely curious in getting a deep dive into what has happened to Hollywood. I have my beliefs, but would love to see a deep analysis about the current state of filmmaking in the mainstream.

It’s like a factory of ideas that are really detached from stories that would interest the broader audience, with just the occasional kind of story idea that interests normies.

I saw One Battle After Another. I was astonished at how well the movie was made while at the same time being astonished at how irrelevant and detached the story was from what your average moviegoer would be interested in, in my opinion.

There’s always been low budget silly movies but their concepts just seems to have almost entirely replaced the typical storytelling that used to be Hollywood’s bread and butter. Very odd time

Well made but there's not really a story within it that I could connect to. I give PTA some credit because he really doesn't make anyone out to look very good.

@thedrudo - yes. Never bet against PTA. But the purpose of the movie felt incredibly lost… and hostile towards anyone outside of the left. Nothing subtle or universal in its appeal except for the craftsmanship of the movie of course.

@Lucasberg - It's Hollywood. These people have always been out of touch, but in many ways they were always sort of aspirational. You could look to them for certain social trends. They were the "cool kids" but since then social media has taken over.

It's like what podcasts did to late night tv. With a shrinking audience and a platform from a bygone era, late night has shifted to heavy handed one sided political posturing and grandstanding over entertainment. Hollywood has done this as well. Feeling their relevance wain, they have shifted to lullabies for their base.

Hollywood is like 99% left leaning so their movies and commentary reflect that. They have no interest in talking to the other half of the country and they don't seem to know or care what that does to their bottom line. Sure, it'll make the hive over at Reddit and BlueSky cheer for a few weeks in their bubble, but the rest of the country won't care to even watch it.

It's supposed be the entertainment industry. Something we can all watch and enjoy. Sure it can lean heavily one way sometimes but when that's always the case it just becomes boring and predictable. Just like Kimmel/Colbert/Meyers/Oliver/Stewart. The punchline will always be Republicans and Trump bad. (Please clap)

Well a lot of people don't want to be preached to by a group of people that despise them. So they will overlook technically well made movies because the intent is all wrong. I will give that movie praise for it's originality and how it was crafted, but I'm getting pretty tired of this kinda messaging.

@Lucasberg - Haven’t seen One Battle yet so I can only go off of what I have heard. That movie was made for the US culture Hollywood WISHES we had. And it was released 2+ years too late. Popular culture would have been more accepting of that movie a few years back. 2018-2022 seem like the years that movie could have been more popular.

@DarthOmega - Great summary of how industries that used to have monopolies on their markets have struggled now that people’s options are more open.

Regarding the hyper-partisanship we have seen at Hollywood in recent years, I think it’s less about trying to play to their base more and more about the fact that they literally think they are doing good in the world by pushing these causes and messages.

@mountainman - I do think they believe in much of what they say, but they are total hypocrites. Take Leonardo DiCaprio. Pretty much Hollywood's poster boy for climate hysteria. The guy flies to those speaking events in private planes producing more Co2 in some of those trip than most people would ever produce in a lifetime. I think they want to be seen as good people rather than actually be good people.

@DarthOmega - Yes but that’s what champagne socialists do. They preach an aesthetic that appeals to some people in the common class while living none of it. They know that the policies they advocate for will affect the common people but not them. Their advocacy of stricter gun laws to affect a normal person from being able to defend themselves while living in gated communities and surrounded by armed guards constantly is another example.

They are locked into the system. They only have their luxurious lives because powerful people allow it. And those powerful people demand that certain messages are pushed so they push them.

These millionaires singing “Imagine” from their mansions while most Americans were impacted in much more life altering ways during 2020 was a major mask off moment.

The same criminal element white people are afraid of, black people are afraid of. I remember seeing that clip years ago and it made so much sense. All of the criminals they advocate for. No cash bail, repeat offenders. The first and foremost affected by this are the people in that community.

I was a liberal. Then I started to see the cracks. So much of what they stand for ultimately produce destruction. I still think they're some principled, well intentioned people on the left. I just think they've been hijacked. Look at social media's reaction to Trump's historic actions in Israel and Gaza. Some are refusing to give him any credit. The man has been instrumental in ending about 8 conflicts across the globe. Crickets from them. At least the Clintons named Trump specifically yesterday. A rare human moment from them. Not so much with the other politicians.

@TheFinestSmack - I don't watch Fox, so I don't watch Gutfield which is the closest thing to a late night show featuring conservatives. But if every late night show, daytime show, the majority of mainstream media and 99% of Hollywood all parroted conservative talking points I would feel weird. I'd feel like I was in a bubble. I'd feel like I was swallowing propaganda. I would actively seek out an alternative. The fact that many of them don't question any of it is very strange, but not so strange once you understand how cults work.

@DarthOmega - Just look at the responses from the poor people who live in the inner cities that the national guard has been coming into. They are appreciative that the crime is finally being addressed. Liberal politicians preach an aesthetic based on feels that sounds very appealing to middle class and above liberals. They advocate for mass illegal immigration, but those people don’t end up living in the neighborhoods with the rich liberals, they get put into poorer, mostly black and brown neighborhoods. Most people want to live in low crime neighborhoods or have affective deterrents to prevent themselves from becoming victims of those crimes.

I try to be pretty objective, but it's clear to me these people are pushing an agenda at the expense of storytelling.

That said, America is hardly "the world". Homosexuality is outlawed and is often punishable by death in many African and Middle Eastern countries unlike here.
In many parts of the world we wouldn't even be able to have this conversation.

@Feralwookiee - ok, that's my misread, apologies. I actually agree on the agenda that is pervading so much of what is produced, to the detriment of story and character development. I've no idea who keeps authorising the budget for this considering the diminishing returns. However, I've never associated that agenda with the left or right of politics. I can only think it's different in the US? America seems to be disappearing down a right-wing rabbit hole, which appears from the outside as hateful rhetoric and pseudo-science fuelled by extremist religious nonsense.
Without homosexuality we wouldn't have an entertainment industry and the world would be a much blander place. I thank the universe that I wasn't born in Africa, Russia, china or the Middle East. Not my lifestyle but I see much to admire.
