Matthew Vaughn May Direct KINGSMAN 2; Explains Why He Tends To Avoid Sequels

Matthew Vaughn has directed several great comic book movies, but has never gone on to helm their sequels. The Kingsman: The Secret Service director has now revealed that he'd be interested in returning for a second film, and also explained why he avoided them in the past...

Matthew Vaughn has directed some of the most highly praised comic book movies of the last decade, including X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass and this year's truly excellent Kingsman: The Secret Service. However, a running theme that has followed the British director is his tendency to avoid making sequels. While this didn't stop X-Men: Days Of Future Past from being great, Jeff Wadlow's Kick-Ass 2 had a much harder time living up to its beloved predecessor.

For this reason, many fans of Kingsman have expressed their desire for Vaughn to return for the sequel. While he's currently writing a first treatment for the film, this would be an unprecedented move for the director. However, in an exiciting turn of events, Vaughn revealed to Yahoo! Movies that he would love to work with the characters again, and that he could end up breaking his own rule and helm Kingsman 2 - so long as it avoided the tropes he disliked most about sequels.

“Well, the good news is that I’m writing [Kingsman 2] next door at the moment. If I think I can get the script good enough, then we are making it. So again, stay tuned but we are doing our damndest to make that happen.”

"I have to feel inspired and that I'm doing something different, and pushing my boundaries. In sequels normally you're doing just more of the same. I'm trying to re-invent how to do a sequel at the moment - it's tough. I'm in love with these characters and I want to work with them again, so I'll probably be breaking the rule of tending not to make sequels. The bottom line is I have to feel excited and to think I'm making something new when I make a film."

Would you like to see Vaughn return for Kingsman 2, or would you rather see him focus his attention on a new project? Perhaps one of his frequent collaborator Mark Millar's other original comics?
