STAR WARS: Daisy Ridley Admits Reaction To "Super Divisive" Sequel Trilogy Is "Still Upsetting"

Both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker split opinions and Daisy Ridley has now shared her thoughts on the reaction to the Star Wars sequels and that divisive kiss between Rey and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren.

Despite borrowng a few too many ideas from A New Hope, J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens proved that a Star Wars sequel trilogy could work. It introduced an intriguing set of characters and mysteries, only for Rian Johnson to undo almost all of his predecessor's contributions to the franchise in The Last Jedi

It was a great sci-fi movie in a lot of ways, but not a good Star Wars story; the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke was killed with no explanation, Luke Skywalker was a coward who fled after contemplating the murder of his nephew, and it turned out Rey's parents were nobodies, after all.

When Colin Trevorrow parted ways with Lucasfilm, Abrams was enlisted to deliver a fan-pleasing Episode IX - later titled The Rise of Skywalker - which, by undoing Johnson's contributions to the Skywalker Saga, ended up being a disaster. Every attempt at making fans happy just led to more confusion and the movie tried to cram in so much story, it ultimately felt rushed and messy.

Talking to Josh Horowitz (via SFFGazette.com), Daisy Ridley - who had to deal with more than a few questionable moments as "Rey Skywalker" - was asked to share her thoughts on the mixed response to the 2019 finale.

"Was I surprised? Uh, I think it's still upsetting because you don't want people to feel like you've not served the thing that they're a fan of," she admitted. "Rian's one was so divisive. It really felt like the first one...everyone was responsive in a similar way. And then Rian's one was super divisive and the last one was super divisive. It didn't change how I felt about it."

"Before I had breakfast with Kathy last year...I had five people come up to me and go, 'Are they going to do any more with you?' It was really strange," she said of how the response from fans has changed since The Rise of Skywalker was released. "In the six months before that, the way in which I'd been greeted by people's responses was quite different to the way I had been. I think time had passed and it didn't feel so immediate."

In The Rise of Skywalker's final act Kylo Ren - who had put the Dark Side behind him and returned to his Ben Solo identity - lay dying after sacrificing himself to help save Rey from Emperor Palpatine. With that, they kissed, a moment which divided the fanbase.

According to Ridley, they shot a version of the scene "without" the infamous smooch. She added, "I felt like we all...it felt earned. What's interesting again is intentionality. My feeling in that moment was that it was a goodbye so that felt earned. You could call a kiss a thousand things but I felt like it was a goodbye and that whole scene felt so emotional."

Later in the interview, Ridley was asked about rumours Helen Mirren was being lined up to play a much older version of Rey in an earlier iteration of her upcoming Dawn of the Jedi movie. She admitted to never hearing about those supposed plans and said the expectation was always that she'd return to the role somewhere down the line.

JJ Abrams irreparably damaged the Star Wars franchise in 2015 and everything since has been a desperate struggle uphill.

"super divisive", don't know anyone who defended epi 9, that one is widely regard as just being bad. epi 8 for some reason you find some crazy people from time to time who defend that thing. epi 7 is the one mostly "accepted" but also because it's just New Hope 2.0. Still a horrible idea bringing her back.

@Urubrodi - I defend 9 to the point that, I think it’s the best film they could have made with what they where left with at the end of 8

I feel like she always seems to have a good take on things.

I stand by anyone calling for those films to be wiped from canon, but I wouldn't at all mind seeing her return as Rey Skywalker or Jaina Solo Fel or somebody else along those lines.

Or even a female Darth Vader clone?

@ObserverIO - I would have loved to have seen them use Jaina and Jacen, include Mara Jade, at least use SOME of the EU stuff that had existed!
I think the biggest shame is that it took them so long to get it back off the ground, by the time they did you have an aging cast, Ford just isn't interested, Fisher has unfortunately passed on, so you just have Mark Hamill really left, so it immediately made those storylines a lot harder to work out.

@DevilsDreams - Yeah, that is the real tragedy of the situation. Even more tragic considering they never got those three back together in the same scene, not even once.

I guess there's always uncanny valley Leia to fall back on. She seemed to be popular when she showed up at the end of Rogue One, 10 days before Carrie Fisher's actual death.

Regardless of my, or anyone’s opinions on the films, the reaction was always going to be the same. Star Wars fans are the OG pissy fanboys.

@Twenty23Three - ikr? What kind of idiots actually care about things anymore? lol They should just accept that what they cared for deeply for decades doesn’t mean anything to the corporation that bought it, and consume the content it has become like Good. Little. Drones. Bunch of sooks.

@Tasmaniac - that’s a fairly dramatic reaction. At no point did I say people shouldn’t care about things? If people deeply care about everything Stars Wars before the new movies guess what? All of that is still there, nothing is being taken away or destroyed, and no one is making anyone consume anything they don’t want to. If you're going to get get that upset I suggest seeking therapy

The movies aren’t as bad as you think. I recently watched all 9 movies with my friend. She is a huge fan. And I couldn’t stand 1 or 2. Save for the darth maul fight and pod racing scene. I couldn’t get into 1. And Attack of the clones had some good moments. Mostly towards the end. But ultimately unforgettable. Revenge of the sith was fun and dark. I liked that. Honestly, the only good prequel movie. Then 4 was boring. But I loved 5 and 6. My favorite of the collection.

Then Force Awakens was fun. I know it was basically a reboot of episode 4. But I was entertained and enjoyed it. Then I saw Last Jedi, I think had it been any other sci-fi movie. People would enjoy it more. But since it was Star Wars and went against the grain. It just really brought out the worst in fans. I liked the movie. Probably the best of the sequel trilogy. Even though I dislike the casino world. And episode 9, was okay or meh. However I did like Kylo Ren’s performance, he was the best character in the new trilogy. I liked the ending. But I feel that with clone wars, you can fix many of the mistakes of these movies. Hopefully this new Rey movie fixes some of the sequels mistakes. And the shows happening now, add more depth and info for these movies.

I want them to make these Rey movies just so we can see them bomb at the box office and KK can once again blame sexism.
