As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, Amazon MGM Studios is bringing another popular MGM franchise back to our screens with a new Stargate TV series that's in the works for Prime Video.

Martin Gero, who created NBC's Blindspot, is spearheading the revival that joins Tomb RaiderBarbershop, Legally Blonde prequel Elle, and Poltergeist as big-screen properties being remade as streaming series.

Gero, who got his start working on Stargate: Atlantis, will serve as creator, writer, executive producer and showrunner. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell (Obi-Wan Kenobi) will produce with Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the creative force behind the 1994 Stargate movie. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders within the Stargate TV universe, will serve as consulting producers.

Specific plot details for this new take have not been revealed. Still, Stargate's premise is brilliantly simple yet infinitely expandable: ancient alien devices called "Stargates" create wormholes between planets, allowing near-instantaneous travel across the galaxy.

When humans discover how to operate these mysterious portals, they form specialised military teams to explore thousands of worlds, encountering both wonders and dangers among the stars.

Reimagining Gods from Earth’s ancient civilisations as technologically advanced aliens who once visited our planet and shaped human development, the franchise has explored Egyptian, Norse, Celtic, and other mythologies through a sci-fi lens, creating a rich universe where advanced technology appears indistinguishable from magic.

"Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis," Gero said today. "I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA."

"I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you.  And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary," he concluded.

Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV Development, Amazon MGM Studios, added, "Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos."

"In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future."

Gero's other credits include Quantum LeapKung Fu, Dark Matter, and Bored to Death. As well as Stargate: Atlantis, he served as writer and producer on Stargate Universe and Stargate SG-1

Stargate doesn't have a confirmed premiere date, but you'll want to keep checking back here for updates as we have them.

Martin Gero announcing new Stargate show: “It is not a reboot. It is a brand new chapter. It’s its own unique chapter in the Stargate universe.”

Josh Wilding reporting on the announcement: "STARGATE TV Series Reboot Confirmed"

Either you don't do your research properly or you don't know what the term reboot actually means. This new show is in the same continuity as the previous shows, therefore it is definitively not a reboot. It is a new show in an established canon.

@captainireland - Yeah. It's a revival. I hate when people can't use these words properly. It's not hard.

@captainireland - I was just going to post about this for those who haven't read the actual full post. It's not a reboot. I wish these people who write these articles would understand the meaning of 'reboot'.

Never watched that show, but I think it was pretty popular for a while. Why not reboot a story with a good concept that just couldn't grab the fans, like a reboot of 'ALIEN NATION' or maybe even 'LEXX'

@JackDeth - they aren’t rebooting it

It will just be another story set in the same canon like the other Stargate shows.

Cool.

It’s been awhile since I have seen the Stargate film but I remember it being enjoyable in a cheesy 90’s way with Kurt Russell & James Spader as the leads…

However, i never saw any of the shows so might give this one a shot since the premise of the franchise does seem fun!!.

@TheVisionary25 - The shows are widely considered to eclipsed the Roland Emmerich show in terms of influence and quality.

@TheVisionary25 - The shows were MOSTLY far better than the film, and I loved the film, but like a lot of stuff that goes on for a while it started to run out of steam narratively towards the end but both the original SG-1 team and SG-Atlantis were far better than the film by a long way. Once SG-1 lost RDA as a main team member it became far less reliably good and SG-Universe started out with a decent concept but never realy worked out what to do with it.

I was a Dev for many years along with my wife on one of the semi-official Stargate websites (Ausgate, that helped run the main Gatecon conventions for it in Canada) as well as ending up CO of one of the 'teams' on the main official SHO sites for fans (of SG-13, originaly formed by a great woman going by the ID of Isis as a group who'd chat at night whilst the main site was updating hence being called Night Ops, that the show paid homage to by giving SG-13 an official name drop on the show).

@TheVisionary25 - I've only seen the movie as well, but this seems like a good moment to get into the show as well (albeit a new one). Wouldn't mind those two returning, if possible

I CANT BELIEVE ITS ACTUALLY HAPPENING....I adored SG-1 when I was a teenager, loved Atlantis and Universe too...about time, I always said that when The Expanse ended in 2021, that the return of Stargate would be the perfect successor to The Expanse for Prime, and have been disappointed that they didnt take advantage of the franchise's limitless potential...but finally, here we are!

I always had an idea of a relaunch dealing with a different setting where everyone on Earth knows about the Stargate and alien life, and they are trading with other planets (like in the 2010 alternate future episode). We could follow Carter and O'Neill's daughter as she makes her first steps into the galaxy, have Amanda Tapping and Richard Dean Anderson make appearances in a few episodes to hand over to their daughter. The daughter could get caught up in an adventure, meet Jaffa (who are now the main defenders of the galaxy), Tokra (who could be a CIA-style network of the galaxy) and just bring back the fun of SG-1. and go insane with the alien worlds this time, every planet was basically the forests of Vancouver in the original series haha

Please dont [frick] this up, because sadly Martin Gero was involved with the less than successful Quantum Leap relaunch...hopefully this goes better.

@TheVisionary25 - the cast was good, some decent episodes, but Scott Bakula should have been brought back, for at least a couple of episodes, instead of being referenced all over the place

@TheVisionary25 - It was OK but not great, had potential to get stronger however but there was something missing that didn't recapture what realy made the original work (beyond just the main two actors that is).
