"Sometimes Actors Don't Want To Be In It": TRON: ARES Director Addresses Movie's Lack Of Returning Actors

TRON: Ares director Joachim Rønning and producer Justin Springer have weighed in on the threequel's lack of returning actors, with the former suggesting that some actors simply didn't want to come back.

TRON: Ares will take us back to The Grid for the first time since 2010's TRON: Legacy, but the threequel looks set to feature only one familiar face from the franchise that kicked off with TRON in 1982.

We are, of course, talking about Jeff Bridges as the returning Kevin Flynn (fortunately, he won't be de-aged this time). It seems there's no room in the movie for Garrett Hedlund's Sam Flynn, Olivia Wilde's Quorra, or Cillian Murphy's Dillinger Jr., a disappointing development for fans hoping this movie would serve as a sequel to Legacy.

Director Joachim Rønning and producer Justin Springer shared their takes on that while talking to GamesRadar+ (via SFFGazette.com), with the former explaining, "These things are not only creative choices; sometimes actors don't want to be in it anymore."

He added, "There are different ways of looking at that, but I think the story fell into a place where we felt that we didn't need the old characters to be front and centre. We wanted to take this into a new direction while, at the same time, honoring the universe that we’re in."

Springer's take was that TRON: Ares' priority is introducing us to a host of new characters, starting with Suicide Squad star Jared Leto as Ares. "We're telling a story that's 14 years later, and the most important thing is that we tell this new story in a way that works."

"To just throw cameos in, where it's a parade of people that we love from this franchise, I just feel like it's fan service that doesn't serve the story. But we are definitely focused on ways to surprise the audience.

"If we don't touch something in this movie, I always think about where else we can play. I produced the animated series [Tron: Uprising] and I worked on the theme park rides," he continued. "There are all sorts of different ways to keep the mythology alive, whether that be in a film or a series or whatever, if we're so lucky."

While many fans will be disappointed with the lack of cameos (and the fact that this isn't a direct follow-up to TRON: Legacy), it has been a decade and a half since the last movie was released, and it's not like it was a huge hit at the time.

Whether TRON: Ares is going to find a greater level of success remains to be seen. Excitement seems relatively muted as of now, and it's hard to shake the feeling that this will be another high-profile blockbuster that struggles to make its mark, post-COVID.

As of now, it doesn't appear as if recent sexual misconduct allegations made about Leto will impact how Disney markets the TRON threequel.

TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind's first encounter with A.I. beings.

The movie stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson. Joachim Rønning directs; producers are Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Leto, Emma Ludbrook and Steven Lisberger.

TRON: Ares arrives in theaters on October 10, 2025.

While that may be true for some actors, it very much seemed like Garret Hedlund wanted to be involved. And it looks like the main reason is followed up after that quote, where "I think the story fell into a place where we felt that we didn't need the old characters to be front and centre."

@HeavyMetal4Life - yeah it does seem given the opportunity he'd be on board.I also like the fact that he isn't throwing a fit because he isn't in it. Hes pretty much said that hes hoping this creates more demand for the franchise where he could be included in the future. Seems like a questionable statement from this director to insinuate otherwise but the quote is also out of context so I'll give him the benefit of doubt. Either way, Hedlund is being a class act about it

@Biggums - just curious, are you not seeing the upcoming movie because it doesn’t look interesting or because of another reason?

@epc1122 - main cast being missing AFAIK is my main conundrum. Léto doesn't help either.
Still own the Tron:Evolution game too(which i love, albeit flawed)

@Biggums - as a kid I enjoyed the original Tron and really liked tron legacy. I thought from uprising was surprisingly good as well. Definitely disappointed that garret hedlund and Wilde aren’t returning. Pure speculation on my part but think (in reality hoping) at least one of them will be in a post credit scene to set up the next installment. Not the biggest Leto fan by any means but interesting to see the grid brought to our reality. It’s similar to that movie pixels, I think, but it seems like the natural progression to this series. So yeah, been a fan for years so I’m cautiously excited. With the way the box office has been so unpredictable, have a feeling this will be the last tron movie I get to see on the big screen. For the record, I wasn’t old enough to see the first one in theaters. So it’ll be 2/3 for me. 👍

Digital de-aging has come a long way in the past 15 years since Tron Legacy. I would not have minded them using it again. But instread of bringing Bridges back as clue again they should have used it on Bruce Boxleitner to bring him back as Tron. It‘s called TRON: Ares. Where is Tron? No word about him.

Cillian Murphy‘s Dillinger jr. could have been a plausible Face for this movie‘s big bad (Programm).

And Wild and Hedlund at least should have cameos. After all Ares continues a story that Wild‘s character started as a programm finding a way to enter the real world.

Still looking forward to Tron: Ares though

You're not getting it. We don't want meaningless cameos. We want a Tron movie starring the Tron characters. You know, like maybe Tron, the title character.

"Sure, Jared Leto may have abuse allegations, and maybe he was a cult leader, but at least all of his movies are box office failures and he's a terrible actor. Let's make him the face of another major franchise."

I wouldn’t be surprised if some actors like maybe a Cillian Murphy didn’t want to come back to a franchise he was in briefly 14/15 years ago since he’s in a different place in his career but I feel Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde would have…

Anyway I think it ultimately boils down to Legacy underperforming when it came out so they decided not to have another one featuring Sam & Quorra but have it be in the same universe with the prior 2 films that just tells a new story with new characters for the most part which is understandable imo.

Anyway , Ares looks fine but him mentioning Uprising still makes me wish we got a continuation of that more then anything else since it’s the only time the franchise connected for me thus far!!.

I can’t imagine Hedlund or Wilde would’ve said no to this movie. At worst Murphy wouldn’t have had time/been interested, but gimme a break. No one seems to want Leto over Hedlund/Wilde, yet here we are.

Still have time to reshoot Lego’s scenes. 😂

I’m still in theaters opening weekend, but goddamn I wish it was more of a sequel to Legacy than this thing is.

Leto = no ticket.

He sucks. He's weird.

Sam and Quora were cool and I see no reason why they shouldn't have been back.

The story for this one looks dumb anyways. Who cares about the real world?

I'm going to be brutally honest here about the last one, but I'm glad they're not trying to follow up on it. Last one felt like it was a Tron fan-fiction, with the intent to only sell to Tron fans...that's it! Awesome soundtrack, great visual effects...and everything else is just FLAT.

So...I'm hoping this will be better and so far the concept is easy to follow...but I hope Flynn just doesn't over complicate the plot like the last one. Although, I think that's his only purpose here in Ares, is to just do that.

bkmeijer1 - 9/16/2025, 5:33 AM
I think they would've gotten away with casting Hedlund instead of Leto. Could've just said the grid generated a warrior in the image of the greatest that hit the grid.

@bkmeijer1 - truth! it's even hinted on TRON's return if you played the game(tied to the movie). The follow-up was set so nicely...so much potential.

This would have been great if they had Keanu Reeves as John Wick cameo against Jared Leto, the Ultimate Assassin vs the God of War (hahahhaha)

West Coast Midnight Run is starting to experience nightmares when thinking about the newest TRON Ares installment in the TRON franchise. But we can't make any actual comments because of the embargo imposed by Disney until opening weekend. So there just happens to be a smattering of clues from the WANQOR Entertainment Press Release

There is also this from WANQOR which was posted on some outlets already
