BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Takes $23.4 Million On The 4th Of July

Marc Webb's reboot of the Spider-Man franchise has been a hit at the North American box office, taking an $23.4 million during yesterday's Independence Day celebrations. Hit the jump for details.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that The Amazing Spider-Man made $23.4 million at the box office yesterday, taking its current total in North America to $59.3 million. While its Tuesday opening of $35 million broke records, it failed to live up to the Wednesday record total made by the original Transformers back in 2007 ($29.1 million). The site also points out the fact that Spider-Man 2 made $22 million on July 4th, 2004. With an A- CinemaScore (and an A from moviegoers under the age of 18) and mostly positive reviews, it looks like Marc Webb's reboot will be a hit for Sony Pictures. The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Disappointing for a fourth of July. Espcially with the heat being so bad around the country, you would think that people would want to sit in the AC of a theater.

Hey Josh, I'm not sure if the "2nd best" fourth is accurate. I think others have topped it but they opened on the 4th where Transformers and ASM opened on the 3rd, Per box office mojo.

That's actually a pretty big drop-off for the 4th. The first Transformers actually did more business for the 4th of July than on it's opening day, and earned $6m more than Spidey despite no 3D and inflation since 2007.

I honestly think this should have been release in June. That way we get a CBM for the months of summer.

First the Numbers are wrong...but we'll go with it,

1. 7+M for midnight showings
2. 35M for opening Day
3. 23.4m for the 4th.

Seems to be over $65M

That being said...a 30% drop over night is huge.
TED has done just as well relatively speaking and actually better if you account for it being rated R.
Even Magic Mike (which I haven't seen) has done relatively better.

This is not a huge runaway success yet. Lets see how the rest of the week and weekend plays out.
I think after the fan boys blow their wad we'll see if this is a true blockbuster/money maker or if it's a studio dud like Superman or Green Lantern.

I still think that as a character alone, Spider-Man is SLIGHTLY more popular than Batman. I seriously do believe that if this had been the first Spider-Man film ever made, the numbers would surpass The Dark Knight Rises.

Ceejay, I know The Dark Knight Rises will sell more tickets than Amazing Spider-Man, that's a given. I'm simply saying that if this had been the first Spider-Man film, the numbers would be different because it would have sold more tickets on opening weekend.

The next 2 weeks are critical for the box office numbers for this movie because when TDKR hits its going to drop dramatically.

FYI, I'm not saying that out of hate or to start a flame war but both movies are 2 big summer blockbusters with high anticipations and most people flock to the most recent movie. If TDKR came out before TASM then the same would apply.

The movie was good. They pick a good actor to portray Peter Parker/Spiderman. Not ever movie going to will be good to everyone. It was good; but it will not make the money The Avengers did.

And as for popularity, there is no way you can determine which character is most popular. Any presumption on either character being so is based purely on your opinion, not any numerical fact. I've been buying comics for over 40 years, ran a comic shop for 7 years and have many friends still buying comics yet very few people I know buy Spiderman even though they still saw and bought the movies just like they did every other comic turned to film. I'm a huge Batman fan yet I didn't buy tickets to see Batman Forever or Batman and Robin.

A ticket sale for a movie be it comic or otherwise is all down to some level of marketing and ultimately if the individual feels the movie looks like its worth paying to see. Very little goes down to the popularity of the character, I saw Spiderman 3 times in the cinema yet I won't watch this new one again after I saw it two days ago, it just doesn't have repeat viewing attraction like The Avengers for example.

Okay, maybe I just worded that badly. Spider-Man 3 sucked, left people with a bad taste. Five years isn't a lot of time to forget a bad movie which is why some people have said it's too early for a reboot. It this were the first Spider-Man film or if, say, 3 never happened; I think it would have had higher box office numbers that would have given any of the Dark Knight films a run for their money. Sorry, hopefully that explains my opinion better.

For the position the studio was in they the did a perfect job. Awesome stuff. Will see again in theaters.
Only few more weeks till the Dark Kngiht Rises.

There were a few weird decisions mainly with Peter showing off his powers too much but the main thing is that the y got Peter PERFECT. Andrew Garfield is on the level with RDJ as far as perfect cbm casting is concerned IMO
