Lights Out! SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK's Broadway Run Comes To An End In January

If, like me, you were foolish enough to put yourself through this 120+ minute crapfest, you'll be glad to know that after a number of controversial stage malfunctions and negative reviews, Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark will finally come to a close in the New Year. Read on for details!

According to The Wall Street Journal, it will be announced this week that Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark will close in January. The $75 million musical opened in June 2011 and was plagued with problems from the start, including six actors being injured and director Julie Taymor fired from the show so it could undergo a complete overhaul after a wave of negative reviews. While it's among the top shows for attendance figures, it constantly fails to break even and will take advantage of holiday-ticket sales before closing. I saw the show when I visited New York earlier this year and it was indeed terrible. You can read my review by clicking HERE. It's really that bad.

I remember tuning into the Broadway station on XM radio, and the hosts had very positive things to say about Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark. I have to wonder if the people who saw this and hated it are even fans of Broadway musicals. I mean, I feel like if you went in expecting something even remotely resembling an action-packed blockbuster blockbuster, then you were destined to hate the musical with a passion.

Remember when Green Goblin was rumored to have a suit just like the one in this show?

Does it turn out in the end it's actually Otto in Peter's body the entire time? Or does Mephisto wave has magic wand and erase this ever having happened?

At the end, it's revealed Spidey only did a Broadway show because he couldn't join The Avengers.

I saw it and I liked it. I give it 3 out of 4 stars. It's not a masterpiece but it is definitely entertaining. I feared for the safety of the all the actors AND of the audience members below the all the web swinging.

The last time I visited USA was at February of 2011 and I was really mad that I wouldn't get to see this. But the reviews sucked so I guess it would be a waste of time.

I don't understand people celebrating upon news like this. An crew of hard-working stage folks are losing their jobs - I doubt all of them will head to Vegas, if and when the production actually debuts there. I've been to a few Broadway shows, including this one, and the amount of effort put forth every night to put on this Spider-Man show is 100 times greater than nearly every other show out there. Yeah, the script is pretty lousy (although not entirely unfaithful to Marvel's version), and most of the songs are forgettable/awful, but the stunts are AMAZING. You do get to witness Spider-Man soaring above the crowd, just like in the comics, cartoons, and movies! The actors did a good job, especially Norman Osborn, who was clearly having a ball on stage.

SM:TOTD was surely a missed opportunity, though. A decent script with fewer/better songs (a couple are quite good - I loved the "Bouncing Off the Walls" number!) could've been the toast of B'way, as evidenced by the tickets sales of this mediocrity. Instead of ending the show altogether, I'd have preferred (yet another) script re-write, and a complete re-tooling of the show, leaving only the stunt-work intact. But it ain't my $75 mil, so...

Hopefully it will undergo some significant changes when it gets to Sin City...

Blanket: it's a lot easier when you realise the majority of people on this site are 15. Or at least when you start pretending that's the case.

@intruder you don't have to skip school. Ever heard of smartphones? You can use them in class. Trust me, that's what I do and yet I'm the best student in my class because cbm is educational! And I'm 17 actually, this is my last year at school.

In regards to the original review: Had it ever occurred to you that it wasn't "a ripoff", but an adaptation of the movie for the stage audience? They've been doing that a LOT on Broadway lately, adapting books or movies for stage.

If only it came to Australia, because I would have dished out a lot to see this. Can't critic unless you've seen it and experience such things before. Musicals are great, no matter what the production value is.
