Marvel Comics Editor Stephen Wacker Shares His Thoughts On THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Stephen Wacker has helped usher in a new era of Spider-Man stories as editor of The Amazing Spider-Man, and talking at the FanExpo Canada, he revealed that like most fans, there was one moment in the Sony Pictures adaptation which just didn't sit right with him.

Since taking over the reigns of Amazing Spider-Man as editor, Stephen Wacker has ushered in a new era of stories featuring the character, taking Peter Parker from "Brand New Day" and all the way to "Big Time". He's also responsible for editing the critically acclaimed relaunches of Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Punisher, Venom and more. Talking at the FanExpo Canada on Friday, Wacker was asked to share his thoughts on Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man, and like many of us, he had one niggle with the big screen adaptation in particular.

"I'll be completely honest -- as I was watching it with my son, I loved it because he liked it but as I got away from it and I thought about the story a little more I was struggling with some bits. Particularly, how he is the same person after Ben dies as he is before? That sort of crux, that sort of change, I thought wasn't part of the film. I had the same problem with the Broadway musical [Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark]. Any time someone retells that story and they don't use that as the hinge of what changes for Peter Parker's life, I kind of flinch at that."

It's hard to argue with this. In the film, the death of Uncle Ben inspired Peter to hunt down his killer, but it certainly didn't inspire him to become a hero. The lack of the, "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" line in the movie was also a great shame. The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

I did like the movie but they took out to many scenes. The costume still looked wierd and so did Lizard. But I am really excited for the sequel.

raimi did a far superior origin story

suit creation was better
villian was better
climax was better
ben's death was better and more emotional

all TASM did better was the love interest and slightly more quips

The lizard didn't look like the lizard at all... Only a few seconds of labcoat, 100% Porno lizard...

it was better than anything other than sm2, people forget that things had to be different to not make it look like the older films, great movie but people just too stubborn to admit that

Bingo. He hit the nail right on the head. Sam Raimi's was SO much better it's not even funny, organic shooters and all. This Spidey looked cooler, had better witty remarks but that was it. Give me the nerdy Peter Parker I knew and the moment of Bens death that changed his life forever. Not this reboot crap.

I definitely preferred this Spidey. The movie had some flaws but for me it is all about the guy playing Spidey. Garfield hit a home run.

I agree about the role of the Uncle Ben death scene in TASM's narrative. It was handled very awkwardly and I believe the reason for this was that Webb and company didn't want to cover the same territory as Raimi. They should have just skipped the origin story and used a flashback like Marvel did in the Incredible Hulk.

@ZombieOverEasy "Could have sworn the "Great Power, Great Responsibility" line was in the flick..."

it's not explicitly, but possibly could have been left on the voicemail Uncle Ben left Pete. Peter starts listening to the final voicemail Uncle Ben left, then he hangs up. I infer that there was more said.

Perhaps a sequel we may listen to "with great power comes great responsibility" via vm

This is the exact reason I disliked the movie.
Everything that happened in the comics that made peter parker spider-man was changed or removed.
Asterisk
Asterisk - 8/27/2012, 6:49 AM
I liked it, but there were many problems, including a threat that Spider-Man doesn't even really take to much effort into defeating.
breakUbatman

Ben's death was weird because they didn't let it sink, Captain Stacy's death seemed more important even Gwen said it "There was a funeral". Add to that the fact that the Spider-sense went off when Lizard was far away on the bridge, but nothing for Ben and the mugger meters away - poor. Just imagine if that had been the first moment Peter realized what that tingle meant and turned just in time to see it all happen.

@RamonSuarez
It's strange that Webb and co seemed to not want to cover the same territory as Raimi but then acted as if Raimi's version was the definitive Spidey template. They should have been braver seeing as they changed the costume just because

-Peter could have been friends with the girl before they struck up a relationship,

-if they didn't want to use the Great Power line they could of had it embroidered into his dad's bag or even be a line that Connor's remembered from his father

- Connors shouldn't have been pressured by corporate or sought to attack them like Green Goblin.

It just felt like they swopped Gwen for MJ, Lizard for Goblin, removed Harry and remade Spider-Man with better acting and told us something happened to his parents

I seriously hope there's a damned good commentary on the Blu Ray to explain some of the decisions made

Amazing Spider-Man totally sucked ass!

I thought Uncle Bens death was way more tragic in Amazing Spider-man than it was in the previous series. The fact that Peter doesn't seem to change is because he focuses all that mourning into what he does as Spidey. That is why he is out looking for the man who did it acting more as a vigilante than as a hero, as is later pointed out by Captain Stacy.

But how did his foe 'save' him, catching a guy who can cling to surfaces honestly made me laugh :)

@starspangledman- Couldn't agree more, Raimi wasted uncle Ben in his movie. There was no relationship between him and Peter. They argued most of the little screen time they had and when he died I felt meh. Raimi's first Spidey was ok, but boring, cheesy and uninspired. At least this new version gave Ben a personality. He seems like an Uncle you could love.

Frustrating movie because it had moments of greatness, but was outweighed by a lot of head-scratching decisions on behalf of the storytellers (mostly mentioned in other comments).

I do hope they make some big improvements on the sequel and find a way to make all of the ingredients work. Garfield is good for the most part, Stone is fantastic, and the effects are spot-on. Now give me a great story and a worthy villain with some unforgettable set-pieces.
