Desperately Seeking Superman

The Man of Steel is easily Warner Bros. most-recognized film icon but finding an actor willing to take the lead in the upcoming movie is proving tougher than seeing through lead.

James Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ) is reportedly interested in taking on the lead in the upcoming revival of the Superman movie franchise, directed by Bryan Singer.
Although Caviezel's manager calls it speculation, CNN featured the actor prominently in a recent article about Warner Bros.' search for its new Man of Steel.

"Would he like to do it? He loves Superman," the manager told The Associated Press. "But the truth is there has been no offer, the script isn't even finished -- but absolutely he'd be interested."

Singer is working on the movie's script but has begun casting yet, despite rumors about Selma Blair as Lois Lane and Johnny Depp as Lex Luthor, among others. The film's target date of 2006 is solid, nonetheless, Warner Bros. told CNN.

Other names that have been bandied about for the lead are: Brendan Fraser, Jude Law and Josh Hartnett, just to name a few.

"He's got to have all the qualities you want in your president and your father -- a toughness and a sensitivity at the same time," said Danny Fingeroth, author of the book "Superman on the Couch," about the mythical public image of superheroes.
"He has a square-jawed indominatability," Fingeroth added. "He can be tough with bad guys, yet he's got the ability to project sincerity and vulnerability that you want Superman to have."
