I have to say that I am a big fan of the Superman comics and of the character since I was 1. I am also excited that the new superman movie “Man of Steel” is coming out in 2012. However, the one thing that irritates me is how Clark Kent is portrayed as a bumbling nerdy reporter and a disguise in order to throw off suspicions from people that Clark Kent and Superman are one the same.
I am well aware that Siegel and Shuster made Superman the real persona and Clark Kent the disguise but he (Clark) does not have to be made into a wuss. I love the Christopher Reeve’s Superman films but the way Clark was portrayed was cartoon-like and almost camp. While Reeve’s Superman was outstanding, his Clark could have been better.
I believe that Clark should be assertive and up to the same level as Lois. That’s why I prefer Byrne’s take on Superman because he gave us a fresh take on Clark Kent making him the real person and Superman the disguise. Dean Cain stated this well as Clark Kent on Lois and Clark “Superman is what I can do, Clark Kent is who I am” and the 1996 animated series proves that Clark being the real person works. It’s sad to see Smallville taking the bumbling Clark route instead of sticking to Clark being the real persona. I just hope the new film makes Clark the real person because enough is enough with the bumbling Clark. They can’t touch the superman costume but they can change Clark.
