The Sopranos have some competition from the Snows! Last night's season three finale had an incredible 5.4 million viewers; a huge increase from the 4.2 million who tuned in for season two's final episode last year (that's an increase of around 28%). Not only does this mean that this Game of Thrones episode was the second highest rated of the season, but it has now become the second most watched HBO series in history. On average, season three of Game of Thrones averaged a gross audience of 13.6 million from network airings, on demand, HBO Go and DVR; that's also an increase of over 2 million from season two. That's the trend with most series now. The second to last episodes are usually the ones where everything happens and the finales just tie up some loose ends.

I felt it was a bit underwhelming too, but not because of last week's episode. The penultimate episode of the last 3 seasons has been the big, jaw dropping episode. The finale of seasons 1 and 2 were both kinda wrap-ups, with a tease of what's to come. This episode's ending felt more like any episode from 1-8 rather than a finale. Or maybe it was just that it's ending was too much like the first season, ending with Daenarys and a hint at more conquering.

They really didn't deliver on last night episode. They should have expected that the Red Wedding would have brought in new viewers based on word of mouth. You then need to hook those new viewers for next season.

It wasn't a bad episode but it felt more like a middle of the season episode spending most of it's time on minor or less popular characters. If I were a new viewer, I can't say that last night would have hooked me for the next season.

Forgot about Theon's castration but he had it coming and more for killing those kids....no pity from me. I was wondering if they were going to show Rob beheaded with his wolfs head on and they did....damn! This looks to be a spoiler free thread so stop being deuche bags with the spoilers Maryboo. Forgot how much occurred in this book. Still alot of good stuff to get to.

That's true about the middle of a book, and makes sense...but still, they could have done a little more to amp it up.

Also, not every season is strictly one book, since season one included some book 2 stuff, and season 2 included some book 3 stuff. I am guessing season 4 will be the rest of book 3, and a little or book 4 and 5 (since they happen at the same time).

It's not a horrible thing to feel bad for Theon. He was completely screwed his entire life, raised among his captors, and then shunned by his real father. It's not entirely weird for someone to want to belong SOMEWHERE, so badly. Of course, it was his choice to go about it the way he did. Maybe he deserves everything that's happening to him, but I don't think it's wrong to pity him.

It was a great episode focusing on the fallout of the red wedding

As a non book reader, it suffice very nicely. Especially with Aryas scene!

Question to all of you GoT viewers-- i've never seen it (don't get HBO) and am debating reading the books (airport was out of #1 a week ago)... which would you recommend? Read the books first or just watch the series on Netflix?? I know there's always the argument that "oh, the book was SO much better than the movie" or "the left out __!"... so, help?

I don't think Netflix carries HBO programs... You could get them from the library. And you should watch it and read the books. I love both.

I've never read the book, but did feel the final scene was lacking, when held up against the final scenes of the previous seasons. Enjoyed it, but it didn't make me crazy-anxious for next April like the last two.

I thought the last episode was awesome so theee ya go. They wanted to give people time to breathe. plus, the book is not one action scene after another. from time to time you get a big set-piece but that's it and it was foolish of anyone to think that all of a sudden in the last episode the real shit would go down, especially since episode 9 always is the climax. After that you get closure and setup. Deal with it.

It was good, hard to top last weeks but they should've ended with Lady Stoneheart being teased.
Now that would've been an ending gaining a "what the [frick]?" and everyone anxious to know what's going on.

the number should be even higher from piracy, although im pretty sure most tv networks use weighted metrics that take that into consideration
