LOGAN Director James Mangold Admits That Part Of Him Wishes Wolverine Wasn't Returning In DEADPOOL 3

James Mangold helmed what was originally envisioned as Wolverine's swansong with Logan, and the director has now admitted to being apprehensive about the character's return in Deadpool 3...

2017's Logan was originally envisioned as a swansong for Hugh Jackman's take on the iconic X-Men hero, so the news that the actor was set to reprise the role for Deadpool 3 came as quite a surprise.

While some were excited at the prospect of Jackman returning for a team-up with Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth, others felt that Logan served as a perfect send-off for the character, and were concerned that bringing the clawed mutant back might "tarnish" his emotional farewell.

Director James Mangold has previously made it clear that he had no issue with Marvel Studios utilizing Wolverine for the Deadpool threequel since it was set before the events of his movie, but during a new interview with Variety, he admitted to being a little apprehensive.

"I can't say that there's a part of me that doesn't wish that we'd let it be," Mangold said. "But there was always going to be another Wolverine. There could be a baby Wolverine and a cartoon Wolverine. As much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they're going to try to. I don't measure my success on a movie like Logan with whether we ended the conversation. I ended my conversation."

Though plot details are still under wraps, Wolvie and Wade are expected to find themselves (trapped?) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (possibly facilitated by Loki's TVA), which begs the question: will Jackman remain on board as the MCU's version of the fan-favorite mutant, or will his return be a "one and done?"

Jackman was asked that very question during a recent interview with the Empire Podcast, and while his response was non-committal, it certainly sounds like he'd be open to the possibility of sticking around.

"I imagine every movie as a one and done, that's how I see it," he said. "I'll be honest, I had a two picture deal at the beginning, but I still assumed it was a one and done. You know, back then there were no comic book movies, so I just take it one at a time. I’m lucky that way, I don't have to think beyond that, but I think it's the best way to go."

We assume another actor will take over as Wolverine at some point, but Jackman might well stick around for a while longer after Deadpool 3.

I don't fault Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds for wanting to work together again. They'll likely play off of each other really well in Deadpool 3. But I thought FOR SURE, we'd have a new Wolverine cast by now. Feige leaving the X-Men on the shelf this long, has been crazy.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - I more then anyone would love to hear news on a X-Men movie by now but because of the stank fox put on the franchise the have to let it air out a bit.plus they have already planted the seeds with ms Marvel and in Black Panther 2.

I'm glad he is. Logan was good, but it was a pretty somber film. It's cool Logan will be back in something hopefully less drama focused.

@ModHaterSLADE -
This may not be a popular opinion, but Logan seemed like kind of a drag to me, possibly because I waited long enough to see it that the positive reviews poisoned my expectations. It was definitely somber, and the possibility of seeing Logan and Deadpool together is encouraging.

@Jarvisjackrabbit - Yeah, it definitely felt a little too slow in some parts.

@regularmovieguy - shame to hear indy 5's not great, since Mangold's like a pro of dad movie cinema at this point. Then again, if Spielberg himself couldn't crack that script maybe it was always on shaky ground lol

@tmp3

Yeah… I’m trying to keep an open mind on Indy but it could be the rare miss from Mangold. And early reviews are def going to put a dent in its box office. Feel like Disney couldn’t have read the room worse bringing this and Elemental to Cannes.

But James, nerds needed to see Hugh Jackman in yellow spandex alongside Ryan Reynolds making dad jokes, and nerds are the ones paying the bills, who cares about legacy or artistic integrity!?

@TheHumanSpider2 - Rather see him in a comic accurate custom or close to the the bdsm outfits that singer had the x-men in the beginning.

I wonder what'll be better - the Mangold-less quasi-follow-up to Logan, or the Mangold-helmed Swamp Thing reboot (assuming it even happens lol)
