BOX OFFICE: CHRONICLE Beats THE WOMAN IN BLACK To Take The Weekend #1 Spot

The Woman In Black was expected to reign supreme this weekend, but possible Fantastic Four reboot director Josh Trank's Chronicle has emerged victorious. Read on for details.

The Woman In Black was expected to win the weekend (mainly down to the fact that it features former Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe) but director Josh Trank's original and critically acclaimed Chronicle has surprisingly managed to finish Saturday with $300,000 more. Both have overperformed at the US box office this weekend as neither film was originally expected to pass $20M. This is good news for the studios as both projects are fairly low budget and have attracted the young audiences that analysts believe were missing from the latter half of 2011. Here are the top 10 films courtesy of Deadline.

1. Chronicle (Fox) NEW [2,907 Theaters]
Friday $8.6M, Saturday $10.3M, Weekend $22.2M

something to think about folks
movie budgets
the majority of the budgets is spent on promotion
remember the wolverine movie that was posted without the effects....
it showed just how shit movies are until the special effects and all the gloss and glamour is added......I could make a movie for a million
hell i could make a movie for half of that
In fact I could make a clever super hero movie for 100 000

only problem is ...the promotions budget....ooops back to square one

on another note ,i posted a xmas animation on this site to entertain the members of the forum....my promotions budget was zero and guess how many folk on here have seen my animation....one!
And my budget for my animation....zero pounds.!

Good to know it deserves it, the movie was just awesome. I'm already thinking about going to see it again today. But The Woman in Black looks interesting, but I'm not in a hurry to see it, I'll probably rent it when it hits DVD.

WIB was good, but Chronicle was fantastic! That is the closest we will get to see a live action Akira film that is actually worth a damn. Actually Chronicle is a better movie than Akira...

@thetrojan - you couldn't be more wrong, the majority of budgets are spent on production, promotion for the average high profile movie is normally less than $50 million. This movie was pretty low profile so that 12 million was most probably all production budget and a separate marketing budget probably around the same.

The film only opened in 2,907 screens as compared to 3-4,000 screens higher profile films normally are accustomed to. Add to that its a superbowl weekend and its performance is pretty outstanding for a budget flick.

I LIKED HOW EACH REACTED DIFFERENTLY TO GETTING POWERS PROLLY DUE TO WHO THEY WERE ALREADY..MATT WAS ALREADY SMART SO MAYBE THAT MADE HIS NOSE BLEED MORE OFTEN USING THE FULL POTENTIAL OF HIS MIND

STEVE WAS MORE WELL ROUNDED SO MAYBE THATS WHY HE DIDNT HAVE ALOT OF ADVERSE EFFECTS OTHER THAN A SLIGHT NOSE BLEED MOVING A CAR..

ANDREW HAD MORE INTERNAL CONFLICT MAKING HIM THROW UP AT TIMES BUT MORE ADVANCED WITH HIS POWERS BECAUSE IT WAS AN ESCAPE FROM HIS LIFE STRESSES MAKING HIM MORE FOCUSED THAN THE OTHERS WHO DIDN'T SEE IT THAN ANYTHING MORE THAN JUST COOL FUN.
