Ryan Gosling Becomes Ghost Rider In New Fan Art - But Which Version Of The Spirit Of Vengeance Will He Play?

Following yesterday's SDCC Ghost Rider movie announcement, we have some new fan art depicting Ryan Gosling as the MCU's Spirit of Vengeance...

We got a heads-up that Ryan Gosling would be announced as the MCU's Ghost Rider before Marvel Studios' SDCC panel yesterday, and sure enough, the Project Hail Mary star took the stage at Hall H to make the news official.

Gosling will play the flame-headed Spirit of Vengeance in a new solo Ghost Rider project from director Shawn Levy (Deadpool and Wolverine, Star Wars: Starfighter), and the movie will ride into theaters in 2028. Starfighter writer Jonathan Tropper has been enlisted to pen the script.

Several characters have held the Ghost Rider mantle in the comics over the years, including Johnny Blaze, Robbie Reyes, Danny Ketch, Alejandra Jones, Michael Badilino, and Kushala. Nicolas Cage played Blaze in two poorly-received movies, and more recently, Gabriel Luna portrayed Reyes in the now-defunct Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.

THR's report on Gosling's casting mentions that he will play Blaze, but this was not disclosed at SDCC, and Kevin Feige declined to clarify which version of the character will be introduced in the movie during a post-panel interview.

“I am going to let Ryan reveal what he wants to reveal, when he wants to reveal it, and what he wanted to reveal today is…he’s playing Ghost Rider. He is a huge fan of the comics; he did come to us particularly with a specific vision, based on some particular comics.”

Since Blaze and Reyes have already been brought to life by other actors, there is a chance Gosling will play an older take on Ketch, who was introduced in the '90s as the third character to ride the highways as Ghost Rider. Then again, Gosling has spoken about his love for the character on several occasions, and definitely seemed to be referring to Blaze's comic book adventures when explaining what drew him to the antihero.

Whichever name Gosling's Ghost Rider ends up going by, we don't expect a direct adaptation of any one comic book origin.

Check out some new and previously released fan art depicting Gosling as the Spirit of Vengeance below.

Johnny Blaze or nothing. Full on Mephisto.

With respect to Cage, Reyes, and sh!tty Ironheart, this could be great. Don't try to connect it to anything from the past.

Start from scratch and get Ghost Rider and Mephisto right.

@DocSpock - I'm sure they'll retain Sacha Baron Cohen as Mephisto. I think he can pull it off. Some of these primarily comedic actors can pull off some serious dramatic rolls.

@Kiba -

I am okay with him as Mephisto. I just hope they don't try too hard to connect it to any sh!tty TV show stuff or Ironheart for the usual reasons.

@DocSpock - why not Danny Ketch? It's not like there's even that much of a difference. It's not like Robbie where he doesn't even have a motorcycle

@Hobmoblin -

Nope. Go all in. Johnny Blaze. The others are minor leaguers.

He's Canadian. It's going to be a jean jacket, not a leather jacket, eh. How about that, two Canadian Ryans in the MCU.

I wonder if Dr.Doom's connection to hell is either transplanted to this( like Spidey's was transplanted to Ironheart)or if they actually use it, expand+ on here to make it more hype and connected to Avengers in a way that stuff like Multiverse of Madness and Quantumania failed at.

I want Blaze. Seriously though, can we stop with starting off with the second person that carries the torch of a hero?

Still mad we didnt get Hank and Janet in their prime, theres a lot of outcry with skipping Hal Jordan in DCU. It just automatically kills the hype of a character we've always wanted.

It’s gotta be Blaze, right? I mean, they did go with Lang instead of Pym for Ant-Man, so I suppose if they’ve got a situation like that where a better story can be told with Ketch, then… maybe? But I feel like it’s gotta be Blaze.

"in the now-defunct Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series."

Why would any self respecting nerd say this while MARVEL are literally in the height of the multiverse saga? The next 2 Avengers films literally see the biggest universal crossovers ever. Yet you think Agents didn't happen, despite Jarvis in ENDGAME and tons of other evidence?

Obviously Josh is just trying to...
