UPDATE: The People vs. Gorilla Grodd Set Videos Reveal HD Look At DCU's Grodd Performing An A Capella Number

Cameras are rolling on The People vs. Gorilla Grodd, and newly released set videos show the formidable Flash villain performing an a capella number with his fellow Metropolis University students.

UPDATE: A new set video shows Gorilla Grodd singing a cover of "As Long as You Love Me" by the Backstreet Boys, a sentence we never expected to write, and you never expected to read...

The People vs. Gorilla Grodd is currently shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, and the upcoming comedy series looks seriously weird (and not necessarily in a bad way). Now, we have an HD look at the super-intelligent gorilla performing a musical number.

He's already been spotted in a graduation gown and smart clothes, leading to speculation that DC Studios is shooting either a montage of his time at Metropolis University, or perhaps an opening credits sequence.

As you can see below, Grodd is decked out in formal wear and joined by similarly smart-dressed men and women who are singing and dancing. It's hard to say for sure, but this seems to be an a cappella group, which isn't what anyone expected from the DCU's take on the iconic Flash villain.

The Flash TV series treated Grodd as a credible threat to the Fastest Man Alive, but DC Studios is taking a more comedic approach. However, while this series doesn't seem to be portraying him as a serious villain, it's worth noting that Creature Commandos hinted at Grodd becoming a major threat down the line.

It's also worth noting that, while there's a man in an ape suit on set, the character will likely be created by VFX in the series. At the very least, we'd expect this stand-in's face to be enhanced with CG.

The People v. Gorilla Grodd follows a superintelligent ape who is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part "true" crime docuseries, the Daily Planet's Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis' most famous murder trials.

The Max Original comedy stars Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, and Superman actors Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

The series also stars Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz. Their respective roles have not been revealed. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers, with Yacenda set to direct all episodes. James Gunn and Peter Safran also serve as executive producers.

James Gunn and Peter Safran, executive producers and DC Studios' co-CEOs, have said, "Between Skyler’s wonderful performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we knew coming out of 'Superman' that this would be a fun world to explore."

"We're excited to work with the brilliant Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries," they concluded.

The People vs. Gorilla Grodd will likely premiere on HBO Max in 2027 or 2028.

Ok that’s pretty funny…

Maybe this Grodd is innocent of killing his father but I still think it would be cool if he is set free and proven innocent in court but then we get a Primal Fear moment in which he reveals his true self and that he did kill his dad with this whole acapella thing being shown in montage and a false story he told Jimmy and others to soften himself to them.

Anyway , I’m intrigued by this show thus i hope it turns out well!!.

One a capella number equal a musical but we were all up in arms at the last DC musical so let's do it again? I rather not but that's just me.

TheVisionary25 - 9/9/2026, 4:30 PM
@Chuck420Taylor - one number doesn’t make it a musical…

It could be a scene or it could just be part of a montage cut together , we don’t know so everyone needs to relax and not look for things to constantly be upset about.

@TheVisionary25 - auto correct backfired on me. I agree one a capella doesn't equal a musical. Im sure it is just a scene. Me personally I've checked out of the Gunn verse unless I see something that looks good in motion. Photos, concepts and stories can all sound and look good on paper. I need to see it move.

To each their own , I have liked the DCU so far (it has its issues but I’m more positive on it then not so far).

This show though is such a bizarre concept
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/9/2026, 5:24 PM
@Kahron0 - it is but I also find it be unique and ballsy to do a true crime mockumentary series about a sentient gorilla being investigated for the death of his father by Jimmy Olsen & some of the Daily Planet crew…

That feels real comic booky imo!!.

I was really hoping this series was going to take itself as seriously as possible as part of the joke itself, rather the. Having Gorilla freaking Grodd break out into song. This universe continues to surprise me in some of its choices for better and for worse
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/9/2026, 5:28 PM
@Kahron0 - I think people need to realize that to us this may be a joke and weird but in this universe , this is normal since metahumans & such have been around for centuries so having a talking gorilla atten college is likely mundane for them.

Also given the creatives involved and the tone of their previous shows in American Vandal & Players , I think the humor might be more deadpan atleast then people expect.

So, inappropriate age gap sex in Creature Commandos.
Harems in Superman.
Gay orgies in Peacemaker.
Robo-cuckold-sex in Lanterns.
And beastiality in this.

I wonder what flavor of degeneracy will be spotlighted in Man of Tomorrow!

All of you haters shut the Frick up. Creature Commandos was surprisingly good. Lanterns is killing it on viewership.
This show will be uniquely fun. HBO doesn't f^$% around. They only request good stuff.

@lazlodaytona - Here are facts to support your claim on Lanterns:

Series Premiere: Racked up 9.3 million views globally in its first three days, marking the biggest debut for a DC Studios show on HBO Max.

Episode 3: Reached a new series high of 10 million global viewers and 7 million U.S. viewers after three days.

Overall Trend: Unlike many shows that peak at their premiere and drop off, Lanterns has grown week-to-week, with the pilot crossing 20 million total views as word-of-mouth spreads
