BOX OFFICE: CHRONICLE Tied With THE WOMAN IN BLACK For First Place

Fox's critically successful superhero/found footage film, Chronicle, is currently tied with CBS Films' The Woman In Black in early predictions for the Super Bowl Weekend's box office. More after the jump.

Early predictions for this weekend at the box office suggest that 20th Century Fox's Chronicle - a found footage/superhero film directed by Josh Trank which follows three teenagers with super powers - will possibly make the same amount as as CBS Films' The Woman In Black. Deadline says that both films will likely make $5-7 million on Friday, and perhaps $13-15 million over the weekend. So far, Woman In Black has held onto a slight lead longer than expected, and could come out on top. Still, check back later this weekend for a clearer idea of what to expect.

It's been said that, should Chronicle be a success at the box office, Fox could hire Josh Trank to helm their reboot of the Fantastic Four film franchise. The movie has received good word of mouth so far (it currently has an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 100 reviews), so there's a good chance that the strong reception will help its box office intake. Share your thoughts below in the usual place.

Chronicle is in UK theaters now, and opens in the US tomorrow.

While i hated BLAIR WITCH and didn't care for CLOVERFIELD too much, i REALLY enjoyed CHRONICLE. The handheld camera thing never feels gimmicky, and it's actually explained in the 1st 5min of the movie in a rather shocking way. TRANK handled the character dev brilliantly, and while in a way i wish we could get more of the backstory on the 3 guys, you know everything you need to know. I normally HATE 90min films because they normally feel rushed (and sometimes i don't feel i've gotten my moneys worth), but the pacing was excellent. I recommened this film to ANYONE on this site!

My only issue with this film...

********SPOILER ALERT**********
...it's the year 2012, i'm really getting fcuking sick of the black guy dying first. It's like some long running Hollywood joke. Pulls me out of the movie...EVERY. FCUKING. TIME.

I haven't seen Chronicle, but I saw the woman in black on tuesday at a special screening, and I must say I highly enjoyed it. Might I add I'm not a fan of radcliffe at all, but he did pretty damn good.

The movie itself was good and creepy. It might be the simple horror movie theme, a haunted house, but it was kinda refreshing to see something different without zombies, werewolves and vampires. Personally, its hard for me to get scared, but it caught me off guard a few times and I got a few jumps out of it.

I just got back from seeing Chronicle myself and words can't even describe how awesome that movie is, it really put a new spin on the found footage and superhero genres. Will definitely be buying when it comes to DVD, and I highly recommend it.

Crappy weekend for movies based on those projections. Those numbers don't speak too highly for either film. I may rent Chronicle, but looks more like a CW show and age appeal to me.

I watched Woman in Black last night with a date, and we both agreed it was a hugely boring and disappointing, with one of the most ridiculously predictable, cliche endings one could ever hope for. Not one single genuine scare moment that hasnt been done better in much less thought out movies. It was a D+ movie at best save your money! I should have went to see Chronicle...sigh
