James Bond 26: Amazon MGM Studios May Have Found The New 007 — And Fans Are Divided

The search for the next James Bond is reportedly nearing its end, with Wuthering Heights star Jacob Elordi emerging as the frontrunner. However, his casting may not sit well with some 007 fans.

Amazon MGM Studios has spent most of this year searching for the next 007, and while there have been plenty of rumours, we've yet to learn who will lead the cast of the currently untitled James Bond 26.

Nina Gold (Game of Thrones) has reportedly been tapped as casting director, with Denis Villeneuve (Dune) set to direct the movie from a script by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). David Heyman and Amy Pascal are the franchise's new producers, taking over from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson after they stepped aside.

Bond is one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood, but it's a job that comes with a lot of expectations, especially as the actor will have to follow in the footsteps of icons like Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, and Sean Connery.

As we first revealed on ActioNewz.com, Jeff Sneider is reporting that Amazon MGM Studios has held the final rounds of tests, with Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein) and Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) among those who participated. While he stopped short of revealing who the next Bond will be, Sneider is confident that Elordi, who is Australian, will be the next 007.

Villeneuve's preference for young Hollywood stars could favour Saltburn star, and the scooper believes that an official announcement is imminent.

Elordi is a much bigger name than Lowden, and it's easy to imagine him being someone the studio would like to build the Bond franchise around. The fact he's Australian isn't sitting well with some fans on social media, especially as George Lazenby—also from the country—isn't exactly remembered as the best Bond. There are also arguments that he's too "pretty" to make a convincing 007.

We'll have to wait and see what happens, but when an announcement is finally made, we'd expect it to be a lot splashier than a press release and a post on social media.

In August, Knight was asked about Gary Oldman throwing his weight behind Lowden. "I cannot speak about this subject. Much as I would dearly love to," he started, adding, "It does make life a little bit easier if you know who that person is, but also you have to write the character, not the actor."

"The thing with Bond is it’s its own universe, and it’s its own franchise. So there are certain rules," Knight continued. "I mean, obviously you have to move it along, but I love where it sits. I love that it’s British. I love that it’s not DC or Marvel. So I feel a responsibility to the text."

Stay tuned for updates on the next 007 as we have them.

Really bad casting and if it becomes a reality I will most likely be skipping the new bond films

@SteviesRightFoo - Why? Anyone better in mind?

@skyshark03191 - would prefer something in the vein of the craig casting - appearances in solid films but not a hugely recognisable household name. An unknown actor that comes close to the book description of the character would be even better

@SteviesRightFoo - I respect that. To be honest I’d only heard of elordi when the casting for bond got underway

Lowden > Elordi..

Though I get that the 'Handsome' appeal helps Elordi with thr female audience more...but hey Craig was no looker either before Bond.

Also Lowden is already kind of playing an agent/spy, which may not help, fingers crossed for him though, he's got alot more wit.

@UnderBelly - Craig has a face like an old catcher’s mitt. (He’s great, don’t get me wrong…)

Give him the scar and he should be fine.

Every rumored actor we’ve heard so far has been completely uninspired.

What’re the complaints? Look up James Bond as Fleming intended and then Elordi. They look very similar. Give him the scar on his cheek and you’ve got 007. So he’s Australian. Brosnan was Irish. Get the [frick] over it.

@skyshark03191 - Brosnan moved to England when he was young though, and that influenced a lot of his personality. So yeah, born in Ireland, but has a strong British background.

Man, I still feel Callum Turner was the best pick we’ve had.

He literally fits Fleming’s description of Bond from the books, Fleming even states he often imagines Bond looking like Hoagy Carmichael.

Fans? Divided? Over the completely trivial? Complaining over fictional people? Say it ain't so!

@TheVisionary25 - yep, and it's getting easier and easier to distance myself from it.

I lost all interest in 007, personally speaking, when Daniel Craig was cast. Bond should be funny and witty, not grubby and dull.

That’s unfortunate since Craig is one of my favorites but oh well.

Jacob Elordi is a good actor but I just can’t see him as Bond , especially being 6 feet 5 inches…

Dude would really stand out for being a secret agent but then again , Bond advertises who he is any chance he gets so not much of a secret then huh?.

Personally my pick would be Jack Lowden who has the acting chops , look & build for Bond so fingers crossed!!.

Anyway , Sneider says those 2 were among the people who did final screen tests so there were more hence if true then it could be someone else entirely given he’s just assuming it’ll be Elordi so we’ll see!!.

I say go for it. I'm not the biggest Bond fan. I loved Casino Royale and Skyfall and grew up with the Brosnon movies as a kid, but let them cook. If I'm honest, I don't see how this next Bond series won't be really good. You have Denis directing and Steven Knight on the script (if you haven't watched Peaky Blinders...It's PEAK ;) I would be shocked if this isn't a homerun for the franchise.

I think it should go to Jack Lowden and not a teen heartthrob. But I KINDA get the headspace for going towards that for Bond. After all, women love Elordi already so...I get it.

I wouldn't mind either of the 2. Saying that Elordi is dividing people because he's Australian, like George Lazenby is ridiculous. As Josh puts it, "he isn't the most beloved Bond", but let's not forget, he was in fact in one of the more beloved Bond Movies. Peoople were upset that someone replaced Connery, they weren't specifically upset at Lazenby.

Lazenby was underrated.
