Relativity Picks Up STRETCH ARMSTRONG, Aims For 2014 Release

You may remember we covered the news that Universal were planning a Stretch Armstrong movie as part of their deal to adapt various properties from Hasbro. That version would have been in 3D and starred Twilight's wolf boy Taylor Lautner. But since that has fallen through Relativity will now bring us the elasticated chap in movie form. We assume since a new studio is involved Lautner no longer be, but you never know. Here is the press release in full.

(Beverly Hills, Calif.) January 30, 2012 –Relativity Media has partnered with global branded play company Hasbro, Inc. [NASDAQ-HAS] to develop and produce a live-action tent-pole film based on Stretch Armstrong, the iconic action hero figure launched in the 1970s, it was announced today by Relativity’s Co-President, Tucker Tooley and Hasbro’s President and CEO, Brian Goldner.

Relativity will be the domestic distributor and will release the film internationally through its network of foreign output partners. The film is targeted for an April 11, 2014 release date.

The film will be produced by Relativity’s CEO, Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter), Hasbro’s Goldner (Transformers) and Bennett Schneir, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Motion Pictures (Battleship). Tooley (Immortals) will serve as executive producer.

Hasbro has become an entertainment powerhouse by creating hit movies and television shows from its rich portfolio of world class brands. Since 2007, Hasbro’s Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises have grossed nearly $3 billion at the worldwide box office. 2012 is shaping up to be another stellar year for Hasbro with its partners Universal Pictures releasing Battleship in April and Paramount Pictures releasing G.I. Joe: Retaliation in June. In television, Hasbro Studios produces shows like Transformers Prime and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic that can be seen on the HUB television network in the U.S. and in more than 140 countries globally.

“We are absolutely thrilled to partner with Hasbro, a company whose global reach and ability to innovate has made them immensely successful in the arena of brand re-imagination– as evidenced by their legacy of creating such franchises as Transformers and G.I. Joe,” said Tooley, “We look forward to bringing Stretch Armstrong to audiences worldwide.”

“Stretch Armstrong is a great example of Hasbro’s rich portfolio of intellectual properties that we are continuing to develop globally,” said Goldner, “We are excited to partner with Relativity on this movie as they are a growing and innovative studio.”

Stretch Armstrong is the classic action hero figure first launched by Hasbro in 1976 and re-launched in the 90’s, sold successfully throughout North America and in markets across the world. The original Stretch’s unique design broke free of traditional action figures, as he could be stretched over and over and always returned back to his original size. The nostalgic toy is considered to be rare and collectible to this day.

Relativity recently released Oscar®-winner Steven Soderbergh’s dynamic action-thriller Haywire in theatres. Looking ahead, Relativity will release the the heart-pounding Navy SEAL action-thriller Act of Valor (in theatres February 24, 2012) and magical adventure comedy Mirror Mirror (in theatres March 16, 2012), starring Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Nathan Lane, and Armie Hammer. The studio just wrapped production on the comedy 21 and Over and is currently in pre-production on Nicholas Sparks’ gripping love story Safe Haven and the international espionage thriller Hunter Killer.

Deadline have updated with the news that Lautner is definitely out of the picture. Apparently the decision was made after everyone saw Abduction and realized how damn awful he was.

This makes me very sad. Like watching "Batman and Robin" sad.

Can we not use the talent of Hollywood to produce quality films instead of throwing money at anything with an "established name"? Those studio execs are playing the field so safely, so desperate for a franchise...

@ GrayFox- You had me rolling on the floor with that one, bud.

Maybe they could hire Taylor Lautner's abs and not him for this movie. You know that is the only reason he was rumored to be attached.

Why is Stretch Armstrong getting movie love before better properties like ROM: The Spaceknight, Earthworm Jim, and The Tick. Oh, yeah. Because Hasbro is pimping out their products. That being said the next movie I want to see aside from the Risk movie is Littlest Pet Shop, Connect Four: The Movie, or Alphie: The Story of a Reading Robot.

Worst idea EVER.

@WellDrawn the first Stretch Armstrongs were filled with corn syrup. If kept at too cool a temperature, they would crack and it was over. I should know...I had 3 of them in the late 70's and after the third one, mom's said 'Eff It.' Only @50 or so still exist today in Mint condition and they sell for thousands of dollars on EBAY!

All that being said, the history of the actual Stretch Armstrong is cooler than any stupid movie about him could EVER be!

I never had high hopes for this but I am so happy Taylor Lautner got dropped. That was the worst casting idea ever. I think they should try and get Bradley Cooper. He looks like the 90's Stretch Armstrong.

I can't believe Hasbro is making a movie for Stretch Armstrong.

I did have fun with the 90's toy, until I stretched it out too far.

@AlexDeLarge87 Now, that I would like to see. I even had the scuba diving Action Man figure. Good times.

If you're gonna do a film about a toy then at least do Shogun Warriors, The Micronauts, or Rom: Spaceknight!
Bartman87
Bartman87 - 1/30/2012, 6:49 PM
Why oh why do they continue to do this crap. Lautner is better than this, he really needs to find a movie that will show him as a real action star instead of the whole pretty boy twilight kid that he is known for right now.
