Warner Bros. Looking At THE DARK TOWER; Javier Bardem May Star

Universal may have passed on the opportunity to bring Stephen King's The Dark Tower to the big screen, but Warner Bros. are now looking at an adaptation with director Ron Howard and possibly Javier Bardem.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. are closing in on deal to bring The Dark Tower to the big screen with director Ron Howard set to helm the first instalment. Actor Javier Bardem was attached while the project was still at Universal and it's hoped that he will still commit to starring as gunslinger Roland Deschain. Akiva Goldsman is being paid to do a polish of the script and will produce alongside Brian Grazer and Stephen King. The film (the first in a trilogy as well as two TV segments at HBO) would likely begin production in the first quarter of 2013.

This is one of the projects and the only one from King that I want to see die. This can't. E made into a movie. Not yet. Give it another twenty years so the tech can keep up. Ala Star Wars the live series. And Javier Bardem. Who is this rudely poo? He obviously lacks the chops for this sort of thing as Roland. If this must be made. I say Josh Brolin or Jackie Earl Hailey.

"He obviously lacks the chops for this sort of thing as Roland". Obviously? Is that what you got from all of his brilliant performances then?..or have you even seen him in anything?

Ever since Javier Bardem's performance in No Country for Old Men, I'll pretty much watch anything with him in it. But I just hope this actually gets off the this time.

Now Viggo is a good choice even though hes over 50.

I don't like Javier for it he is too soft. You need a young Clint Eastwood for this role that is who King created him after anyhow. Since Clint is to flipping old you need to pick a young unknown who is mean and rugged and is a good enough actor to act like Clint.
I also agree this should be a HBO series and not a freaking Hollywood production.

@JohnBBadd...a young Clint Eastwood aka Timothy Oliphant!

RockNRollFrankenstein
RockNRollFrankenstein - 3/12/2012, 8:51 PM
@BLAZINTEXAN, what makes him not right is he doesn't match the description of the character at all. Roland is tall and lanky, with blue "bombardier" eyes. I believe he was physically modeled on Clint Eastwood's character in the Good The Bad And The Ugly. Basically, the character is white, a character who is just as much an Arthurian knight as he is gunslinger. Bardem just doesn't fit the role.

I really REALLY hope Goldsman has a good script!

As much as i would like to see Viggo as Roland (he is my number one choice) i think he wouldnt do it. He is really picky these days.

My vote would go to one of these guys.
James Caviezel, Thomas Jane, Hugh Jackman.

Bardem is great actor but i too cant see him as Roland.

Or Daniel Day Lewis?

Viggo would be my top choice before Javier. Also stick to just HBO or full length film. What a waste of money. Can't [frick]ing wait for this though! Been a fan of Stephen King since I was old enough to read and comprehend his work.

@ValarMorguhlis- Dean Morgan would actually be another awesome choice to play Roland. :)

@Roland, Thanks! I'm just scarred that there isn't anyone out there that can do justice to Roland or King's masterpiece. TDT is one of, if not my favorite series of all time. Started reading it when I was in 6th grade and he didn't finish the series until my Junior year in high school. So I kinda grew up on those stories, ya know? I'm working on a fantasy cast list for the main characters that I'll post here soon.
ValarMorghulis
ValarMorghulis - 3/13/2012, 7:58 AM
Alright, I'll probably get crucified for this, but here goes my fancast for main characters in The Dark Tower:

Roland Deschain: Jeffrey Dean Morgan/Daniel Day Lewis/Viggo Mortensen. Since they're still juggling who's going to play him and I'd much rather Viggo than Bardem (even though he is an amazing actor).

Eddie Dean: Ben Foster/Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Jared Leto
This one is the hardest for me because I always imagined a younger Edward Norton while reading the books. Ryan Reynolds' ability to be a snarky, sarcastic asshole really makes me want to put him on this list, but I just don't think he'd be right for the role.

Sussanah Dean: Naomie Harris
She is exactly how I imagined Sussanah, so when I saw her there was no competition for me.

Jake Chambers: Chandler Riggs (kid from Walking Dead)
Casting kids is difficult, but from what I've seen of him on Walking Dead, I think he could pull it off. Again, while reading the books I imagined Haley Joel Osment a la "The Sixth Sense", but that ship has obviously sailed.

Randall Flagg: Aidan Gillen/Gary Oldman
Gillen's performance in HBO's GoT has me convinced he could easily be a manipulative and hateable villain. And of course Gary Oldman is just the master and it would be interesting to see him tackle a completely evil character after witnessing him as Drexl (True Romance).

So, that's what I've come up with as of now. Obviously there are tons of unknowns out there that may be a better fit and I hope the casting goes well and the right people get the right part and that it all comes together in the end. Such is Ka.
