Brad Bird On The Chances Of Seeing A Sequel To The Incredibles

Despite being an animated flick and not being actually based on a comic, Pixar's The Incredibles is one of the most popular Super-Hero movies out there. So why haven't we seen a sequel yet? Will we in the future? Brad Bird reveals all..

Pixar's awesome 2004 Super-Hero movie The Incredibles was pretty much universally loved and made a stack of cash. Usually a good sign that we will see a sequel. But so far not a whisper. The director of The Incredibles, and the man who will bring us the latest installment of the Mission Impossible franchise, Brad Bird spoke to Movies.com about bringing us another story from the Parr family and why it hasn't happened yet. He says that he has ideas for a sequel, but has been reluctant to rush out a follow up just to make a few quid.

Here are his quotes from the article..

“To say that I’ve had trouble [coming up with a story is to say that [a sequel] has been my pursuit. I haven’t really been pursuing that. I think the reason it hasn’t [happened] yet is because the studio would like me to do it, if there were another Incredibles. And I’ve told them that I’m not really friendly to have someone else take away my child. I would like to think that I have several good ideas that could be incorporated into a next Incredibles, but I don’t have a whole movie yet, and the last thing I want to do is do it just because it would open big, or something like that. I want to do it because I have something that will be as good or better than the original. Toy Story 2 was, to me, a perfect sequel, because it absolutely respected the first film but found new places to go without selling out its characters. So if I could come up with an idea that is to Incredibles that Toy Story 2 is to Toy Story, I would do it in a second.”

Great stuff. I just hope we get to see some of those ideas up on the screen at some point. What do you guys think? Would you be excited for a sequel or has too much time passed for you to care one way or the other?

I feel it should be just how J.J. Abrams is treating Star Trek. It may be a few years til we see a sequel but he's taking his time to make sure we get the movie he wants and the movie we will enjoy.

If there's any Pixar film that needs a sequel, it's Incredibles. It has so much potential to be a huge franchise, moreso than Cars.

I Need another one! ASAP! The movie was the perfect Superhero film. Only other films to have every aspect of a hero in a good film is Spider-Man 2.

If he honestly hasn't been able to come up with a good story for the sequel in EIGHT YEARS, let's face it, he's not trying.

This was about the only 3D animated film I really, really was looking forward to seeing a sequel for, and of course it turned out to be the only one that didn't get 3 or 4 of them. Or even 1.

It would be really cool if they did do a sequel, but the film is strong enough to function as a stand-alone. It's not like there was a cliffhanger at the end or anything - we knew they would eventually defeat the Underminer. So if there was a sequel or sequels, it would just be about their further adventures. I would be fine with it one way or the other.

@Prot3ctor- That isn't a half bad idea. At all. It takes the original idea of the SUper-powered family, and expands with the older kids. I'm not sure they'd do the whole super-villain husband thing for a kid's film. Maybe she married a twin, one of which has powers and the other doesn't and has always been jealous of him. Let him keep the powers a secret so Violet and family doesn't find out about his evil brother who is one of the latest and actually most dangerous villains to date, think Dr. Doom. Evil brother switches bodies with hero brother and adventure enues.

And at least he's holding out for a good story and the right feeling, he isn't trying to just cash in, but "Incredibles" deserved a sequel way before "Cars" and a second "Toy Story" sequel, and a "Monster, Inc" prequel.

Prot3ctor, so its 10 years later and Jack-Jack is only in the 2nd grade? Is he dumb or something? Other than that, I like the rest of your idea. Especially the idea of Violete's hubby being a baddie.

Bird has hit the nail on the head- quality of the film over the quantity of the cash it makes any day. It sounds as if he really wants to do it- if/when its announced, I'll be first in line for the ticket que! :-)

Still the same excuse. Give the franchise up to someone else if you do not want to move forward with it. Just be straight with people. One of the best made and we have to live with Kung Fu Panda2 and a gazillion Toy stories? Not cool

Pixar actually stays away from making sequels to most of their movies, unlike most other studios (see Dreamworks-->Shrek) who like to drive good movies into the ground. Good Pixar movies that could have easily had sequels but don't because Pixar isn't concerned with money:
A Bug's Life
Wall-E
Up
Ratatouille
The Incredibles
Monsters Inc
Finding Nemo

I guess they are developing a sequel for Monsters Inc or something like that, but Pixar actually doesn't seem to be too hot on sequels, which I love. Althought, I would love to see a sequel to the Incredibles.

This elevates my respect for Brad Bird. I like a man with that much respect for audiences and for his characters not to compromise them for a crappy movie that is nowhere near as good as the original, even though it would generate a ton of cash.

The original is one of my all-time favorite superhero movies and I'm among many who would love to see a sequel to it. I'm quite willing to wait if it means a better movie.
