Will JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS Movie Be Kid-Friendly?

A couple weeks ago, Jon M. Chu, the director behind cinematic masterpieces like Justin Bieber's Believe and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, announced that he would be helming a live-action Jem & The Holograms movie. Here's a new update from him.

Collider was lucky enough to snag an interview with Jem And The Holograms producer, Jason Blum. Jason explained that his company chose to put their money behind a live-action adaptation of Jem And The Holograms because it fit their business model. His company likes to fund independent films that a larger studio would be interested in distributing. As long as the film is considered a "brand" and you produce the film on a low-budget you can give it a wide-release and make money. That strategy has been quite successful in the past, but applied to the horror genre. We'll see how this pans out. Jason also discusses the rating that they are aiming for. There's also a new video featuring the film's director Jon M. Chu. It includes some of the zanier audition submissions they have received.
Collider: When will you go in front of the camera with it?

BLUM: We start shooting right away. Very soon.
In like three weeks.

Collider: Are you aiming for a PG or a PG-13 rating?

BLUM: It’s PG.

Cartoon Synopsis - After her father passes away, Jerrica Benton inherits half of his company, Starlight music. The other half has been given to the ruthless Eric Raymond. Raymond plans to exploit Starlight to promote a new band called "The Misfits." Jerrica doesn't believe that this was her father's plan, but she is powerless to do anything about it. That is until a remarkable computer companion named Cynergi enters her life. With a huge supply of instruments left by her father and using Cynergi's impressive powers, Jerrica, her sister Kimber, and their friends are transformed into a rock band named "The Holograms." Now, as the lead singer Jem, Jerrica sets out to make The Holograms dreams a reality, and at the same time keep a group of young girls, a boyfriend Rio, and the record company happy. What's a girl to do?

I'm excited.
Jem had a lot of devoted fans, it's a pretty "out there" project but I remember I loved watching it when I was young.

There's nothing wrong with having a movie aimed at women based on a cartoon and toy line.

Wow 3 weeks!? I'm sure they only began casting a few weeks ago.
My main problem is that they're straying quite far from the source which is pointless when it's a franchise that isn't perhaps too well known and will rely on sentimental value.

Jem... Were really getting a Jem movie. Out of all the remaining awesome 80's properties that we have been hoping to see come alive on the big screen we're getting a Jem and the Hologram's movienext. He-Man battling the evil Skeletor - Nope! Lion-O and Co. VS. Mum-Ra - Not gonna happen any time soon. No friends, were getting Jem because other movies about girl bands like Spice World and Josie and the Pussycats became huge cultural blockbusters right?! Make your film and get it over with.

I'm sure there is going to be body humor in this movie with all the other cartoon movie adaptions. When is Hollywood going to stop raping my childhood? I think I'll pass on this and any other garbage that Hollyweird puts out.

Eh, people need to get over themselves and accept the fact that just because they aren't the target audience for something, it still has a right to exist.

As for why this and not other toy properties (laying aside the whole "maybe occasionally it would be okay to make a film for the other 50% of the population" gender argument,) the reason is stated above: it can be done cheaply. There are no fantasy sets to build, no cgi creatures to add, no motion capture needed. They can film it, keep their costs low, and then sell the distribution rights to a major studio for a profit. They're using the horror film model, and those films usually only have a $10-20m budget.

All of which is kind of sad for Jem fans, I suppose. I've not seen the show, but it seems like it could have really benefitted from a more special-effects driven "Scott Pilgrim" take. Then again, "Scott Pilgrim" might not have earned its money back...
