AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Stars Simu Liu And Tenoch Huerta On Working With Original X-MEN And Robert Downey Jr's Doom

Avengers: Doomsday stars Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) and Tenoch Huerta (Namor) have hyped up the movie, commenting on everything from the X-Men's return to seeing Robert Downey Jr. in action as Doctor Doom...

Avengers: Doomsday will bring together characters fans never expected to cross paths on screen. That's the fun of the Multiverse, of course, and with the "original" big screen X-Men also in play, the whole thing gets even more exciting.

During a recent Q&A, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu talked about finally assembling alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton was once lined up to helm Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time, a sequel that would've closely tied into the story being told about Kang the Conqueror. It was seemingly put on hold when he was briefly on board to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Cretton has since focused on Wonder Man and Spider-Man: Brand New Day

While Liu is still patiently waiting for his sequel, it sounds like he's loved being part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast.

"I mean, what an incredible call to get. I experienced kind of many waves of excitement," the actor said. "I think first getting that call and then learning who else was gonna be there, some of whom I had had the pleasure of meeting and some I had not yet met. But each and every one of them...just iconic, iconic people."

The Barbie star elaborated on that by talking about working with the stars of 20th Century Fox's X-Men movies. "I think this is public now, but like Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Patrick Stewart, just people who I grew up watching and idolizing," Liu teased. "And then having gotten maybe, maybe having gotten the opportunity to do scenes with them at some point."

"That may or may not have been even better – would be something that I maybe would say if I was in the movie," he concluded, making sure not to give anything away. Of course, we know from various leaks that the Avengers and Fantastic Four will fight, and likely battle alongside, the X-Men.

In a separate conversation with El CAPI Pérez, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Tenoch Huerta reflected on meeting Robert Downey Jr. on the Avengers: Doomsday set the former Iron Man was filming scenes as Doctor Doom.

"He’s really handsome, dude. The guy looks really young, too," the Namor actor enthused. "The thing is, I wasn’t in the scene. I went to see the directors, I wanted to talk to them about a few lines and meet them face to face."

"When I was there, [he] comes up to look at the monitors and I said, 'Ah, no way!' I really said, 'Damn, I left my knee pads back at the hotel, man!'" Huerta added. Given their comic book history, we'd be shocked if Doom and Namor don't share the screen at some point.

Avengers: Doomsday stars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, and Robert Downey Jr. Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman all make their Avengers franchise debuts in the movie.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps leads Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn join them, as do X-Men franchise stars Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Deadpool & Wolverine star Channing Tatum.

Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, and Ryan Reynolds are also set to appear, according to recent reports from the trades.

The Russo Brothers direct the movie from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, with whom they previously collaborated on the Avengers and Captain America franchises. Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness's Michael Waldron is also working on the script.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive on December 17, 2027.

Just hope Namor gets a decent stand out moment. It’d Be nice to see the strongest MCU heroes look strong. Same goes for Hulk.

@hazapez - he got shafted on his revenge fight but I liked the open to infinity war. Displayed how strong, methodical and well trained Thanos was at hand to hand combat. Just wish they gave Hulk a round 2 in End Game where he could’ve raged out and gave Thanos a bloody nose or broken arm.

@FallenThomas - well I don’t know what other Namor you’re talking about but I like the actor and he was cool in BP2 but I’d really like to separate his power set from super soldier status to Thor like strength.

@slickrickdesigns - They said in BPWF that Namor was as strong as Thor. Remember, he wiped out Wakanda's throne city without breaking a sweat. It's also worth noting that when he fought Shuri, she dried him out in the ship before crashing him into a desert, then completely engulfed him in flames -- but even though completely dehydrated, it still didn't kill him. I thought he came off as pretty powerful in that flick.

The MCU version of what is supposed the be namor is absolutely hilarious to me. What a terrible choice in terms of casting/design/character direction
SummersEssex
SummersEssex - 10/20/2025, 9:38 AM
@SteviesRightFoo - hard disagree. A different take? Absolutely. They made the character unique with an interesting backstory (oh no, they gave the character interesting cultural roots...), but they keep the part of Namor's character that is most important: he's a douchebag. Namor is an egotistical, insufferable a-hole on the page. ALWAYS. And Huerta hit that on the head.
SteviesRightFoo
SteviesRightFoo - 10/20/2025, 10:06 AM
@SummersEssex - you're entitled to your opinion but in my view it was a laughable attempt

tippymcfoo - 10/20/2025, 10:38 AM
@SteviesRightFoo - People, please. Perhaps you're both right. I don't think the "interesting cultural roots" was THAT distracting. But the design and character direction? First off, get all that shit off him. So many ornaments and trinkets. Drop the ear rings. The nose rings. All the crap around his neck. Give us slick, regal, powerful Namor.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 10/20/2025, 12:08 PM
@tippymcfoo - I agree with you for the most part. But I also recognize that a guy basically in just a scaly green speedo, with pointy ears and wings on his feet, probably doesn't play as well in live action as it does in a comic. This may not have been the way to go, but I understand the reasoning behind redesigning the character.
FallenThomas
FallenThomas - 10/20/2025, 9:20 AM
Throw aways. Shang-Chi is a throwaway character who won't get a second movie and Namor, though a wonderful, key character was thrown away by Marvel who decided to make him a middle aged chubster. Namor should have been a lithe, glorious, other worldly creature in his early 30s. No way Huerta is going to deliver on the potential of this character. What a waste. This kind of wasteful casting, along with the determination to give the ageing heroes from the Fox universe a final pay check is so misguided. Wipe the board clean in Secret Wars and reboot the universe.

@FallenThomas - He's 6'0", which means he's as tall or taller than every OG avenger except Hemsworth.
FallenThomas
FallenThomas - 10/20/2025, 11:54 AM
@Clintthahamster - Really? He looks short and a little chunky on screen, like maybe 5'9" max. I actually don't think height is a prerequisite for Namor tbh but he just doesn't match the potential of what I'd envisaged since I was tiny.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/20/2025, 12:40 PM
@FallenThomas - I mean, yeah, it was a completely different way of envisioning the character and the culture, but I thought it made sense. A comic-accurate Atlantis would have been seen as derivative to the audience that made Aquaman the second biggest DCEU film, so it makes sense that they'd try something different. And I'm sure my personal intellectual biases come into play, but I thought reimagining them as a Meso-American culture was a brilliant move.

Cool!!.

It does have to be surreal for atleast the “younger” (or even old MCU mainstays) actors in this universe to act opposite not just the “original” X-Men but thespians such as Ian McKellen & Patrick Stewart so kudos to them.

Anyway besides the curiosity of RDJ’s Dr Doom , the other interest point for me in regards to this film is the character interactions between the various heroes so can’t wait to see them interact with each other!!.

@Feralwookiee - The latest on the case against Tenoch Huerta is that he has publicly denied the sexual abuse allegations made by musician María Elena Ríos in June 2023, calling them false and unsubstantiated. Huerta stated that their relationship was consensual and that Ríos is misrepresenting their interactions after the consensual relationship ended. Following the accusations, Huerta has faced threats and has reported them legally, while Ríos continues to accuse him of abuse on social media.Allegations: In June 2023, musician and activist María Elena Ríos accused Tenoch Huerta of sexual abuse, calling him a "sexual predator" on social media.
Denial: Huerta released a statement denying the claims, stating they were false and that their relationship had been consensual and loving. Huerta's stance: He claimed that their relationship ended amicably and that Ríos began to misrepresent their interactions afterward. He also noted that the allegations have significantly impacted his mental health. Current status: Huerta has maintained his innocence and has publicly addressed the claims, while Ríos has continued to speak out against him. Huerta has also reported receiving extortion threats and has taken legal action.

@Spiderken2 - I don't believe him, I think something happened, but not to the level of criminality. Either way, it doesn't matter: Huerta could be an angel but he makes a terrible Namor. Horrendous, actually. Normies are not at all excited by MCU Namor. The studio could have casted a really slim, fit but muscular actor with real screen charm, which would have won over women viewers. All a lost opportunity now.
