The Odyssey has arrived in theaters, and Christopher Nolan's latest made-for-IMAX movie is off to a strong start. Ahead of what looks to be a bigger-than-expected opening weekend, the filmmaker's swords-and-sandals epic has been awarded an A CinemaScore from audiences.

That puts it on par with Oppenheimer, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises, and above Dunkirk (A-), Interstellar and Inception (B+), and Tenet, The Prestige, and Insomnia (B).

CinemaScore is a market research firm that surveys audience reactions to newly released movies. After attending opening-night screenings, moviegoers rate films on an A+ to F scale, providing insights into audience satisfaction. Widely used in the film industry, CinemaScore helps gauge the initial reception of movies and influences box office predictions based on audience feedback.

This and a career-best Rotten Tomatoes score bode well for The Odyssey's opening weekend, which Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) now expects to go as high as $117 million. That comes after a projected $50 million on Friday and gives it the third-highest opening of 2026 behind Toy Story 5 ($159.6 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131.7 million). Some analysts believe it could go as high as $120 million.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to eclipse all of them a couple of weeks from now, with a debut that even Avengers: Doomsday may struggle to match.

In terms of the rest of the top five, that's rounded out by Moana ($19 million), Minions & Monsters ($14.5 million), Toy Story 5 ($13 million), and Evil Dead Burn ($5 million). As for Supergirl, the latest is that the movie is likely to end its global run with around $120 million worldwide.

Before The Odyssey was officially announced, there were rumours that Nolan planned to make an action-packed helicopter movie. That would either remake or pay homage to 1983's Blue Thunder starring Roy Scheider.

The filmmaker broke his silence on that in an interview with The Telegraph. Here's an excerpt from their piece, which saw Nolan put an end to the rumours once and for all:

"Having no smartphone, he adds, also means he’s never tempted to hop online to debunk rumors, spar with haters, or respond to gossip – such as the odd story that circulated last year that his next film would be a remake of the 1983 helicopter action thriller 'Blue Thunder.' He says he was 'bewildered' when he read it: 'I have absolutely no idea where it came from. And besides, I was always more of an Airwolf fan.'"

The cast of The Odyssey includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Lupita Nyong'o, Will Yun Lee, Benny Safdie, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Corey Hawkins, Josh Stewart, Jimmy Gonzales, Maurice Compte, and Logan Marshall-Green.

Shot across the world using brand-new IMAX film technology, the film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time, and it's now playing in theaters.

How much do you guys see this making? I doubt it'll hit 1 billion but it's honestly doing better than even I expected. I knew the "controversy" on social media would have zero effect on it but damn it's surpassing even my expectations.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - The Odyssey was offensively bad. I’m not one to go crazy at seeing a black person in a movie, but this is just absurd, on par with the Broadway musical Hamilton where all the founding fathers are recast as gay Puerto Ricans.

The ancient Greece of Christopher Nolan is 50% Anglo-Saxon, 25% Sub Saharan African, and 25% every other race (including Israelis, Chinese, South Asians, and Mesoamericans), but not one Italian, Iberian, Greek, Balkan or other Southern European actor. These people were at the center of these stories before whatever race the terrible and wooden Zendaya is was even invented.

Already the film fails to immerse. This isn’t ancient Greece, it is 2026 United States of America, and Nolan expects you to not be distracted by famous black rappers and h1b Indians serving as main characters in bronze age Greek armor.

There were also no beautiful white women under 50 in the film. Whoever cast this film is making a political statement, they hate white women. Zendaya as Athena is insane. Helen of Detroit, the audience chuckled as she was presented on screen. We will need to invent a new unit of measurement to quantify the distracting amount of botox in Charlize Theron’s paralyzed face as she tries to portray Calypso the Nymph.

Reviewers were claiming the “Elliot Page” character was only briefly on screen. This is not true. Page the laboratory dr frankenstein creation is in multiple scenes seeking to evoke great tragedy and demonstrate warrior solidarity between Odysseus and his men. This is totally ruined by the fact that the Greek warrior we are expected to mourn is a F to M transsexual who at once looks like a 3rd grader at their first communion while also suffering from Benjamin Button’s reverse aging. The real message Nolan is trying to convey is that Robert Pattinson’s 1 dimensional 80s high school jock trope portrayal of Antinous is bullying Page (he breaks the 4th wall and wants you to assume for being transsexual) and deserves to die for that.

The sole redeeming feature is Matt Damon’s performance. The poor guy gave this awful script his all but still couldn’t save it. This is a low IQ Amazon Prime super hero movie made to stroke the egos of Gen Z, who are demoralized watching the collapse of the cosmopolitan American empire, not a tribute to the Western canon worth your time or your money.

We will know in 2 weekends whether this movie will be a box office bomb. I think it will be, especially when Spider Man 12 comes out to compete for the same audience.

Everyone knows I’m not a rightoid or a culture warrior, but I will say with confidence that this film is one of the worst atrocities ever committed to film and ought to be the end of Nolan’s career. I’m still in disbelief at what I just saw. Skip this movie.

@Sominan - You clearly havn't seen the movie, are a racist and dpb't know anything about box office.

1. I havn't Notizen what you said.
2. Page is in 2 scenes, the first one is mehr, the 2nd pretty good.
3. The film is tracking better than any other live Action movie 2026 and will easily cross a billion Dollars worldwide.

@Sominan - I'm not reading all that. Very clearly copy and paste. "Helen of Detroit" and "Elliot Page" are in the film for less than 10 minutes. I don't give a shit
FireGunn
FireGunn - 7/18/2026, 3:24 PM
@Sominan - Actually I read it lol. This post reads like schzioposting. This clown believes that Supergirl, a degenerate deconstruction of a great hero, will be the best superhero movie of 2026. And he wants me to take his opinion seriously? LOL. The irony is that there is nothing in this "review" (Clearly copy and paste as I said) that speaks about the visuals, effects, cinematography, the script, or anything that a film review should talk about. Just identity politics dreck. I don't care about 3 characters that are in the film for less than 10 minutes dude. Do I disagree with the casting? Absolutely. This movie getting anything above a 9 for me is impossible because of so many issues. But I'm going to judge the movie for the movie. The same way I judged Supergirl. If it's absolute SHIT like that, I'll tell you.

Nolan: Cyclopes out, non europeans & trannies in!

Nolan bills himself as the “realistic” filmmaker while simultaneously making less realistic versions of the fantasies he's telling (non European Odyssey with zero Greeks in it (they could have at least kept it all European and pretended the actors are greek in the film)), while midwit redditers ball fan him for it.

Making things ugly and unaesthetic = “realistic” to Nolan and his dumb audiences, possibly because the realities in which they live in today are in fact full of ugliness.

He's doing to the Odyssey the same thing he did to Batman but worse 🤣

(Examples: sucking the super out of superheroes: Batman is now a War On Terror pro Bush metaphor in The Dark Knight. Laughing gas is out in place of knife-carved smiled (yet fear gas is still ok?), cape can't be a cape but a glider that would have Batman doing landings at 50mph that would kill anyone, roid-venom for Bane is silly per Nolan, yet his Bane can't take his mask off for any reason so how does he eat or drink to maintain his strength and size with no venom? The Batman costume must be ugly and unaesthetic so Bruce Wayne can “turn his head in battle,” as tho any of the costume is practical in a fight at all? It made more sense to just have it look cool and pretend it was practical like in previous films instead of introducing real world limitations on an obvious movie costume into the fantasy world of the costume. I have disliked Nolan for a while even pre red-pill)

Animated Batman gave a better retelling of The Odyssey than Nolan:

Unfortunately, it's not just MAGA. It's a globally dogwhistled reaction among every nation's alt-right movements.

Even here, what remains of Golden Dawn still seethes and threatens violence under the guise of whatever "historical accuracy".

I wish I could say "let them cope", but that alone includes "let them", which noone sane or dignified should in such a time.

Honest to God, I had to pause yesterday's screening for a heckler to be removed.

Yes, they're that unhinged and desperate for atention.

No, comfort through inaction and indifference is no longer an option.

@regmovieguy - the best part is that for the past year, Nolan has largely sat back, remained quiet, and allowed the manufactured hate to act as its own marketing engine

He then turns around in the actual movie and addresses/dispatches of the biggest of them in an almost comically absurd middle finger to that entire troll contingent in a deft and masterful swerve worthy of his colossal stature in the industry
