DC Fans Are Celebrating Clayface's Rotten Tomatoes Score — But Is It A Win For DC Studios?

Clayface is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, but will its 76% score translate into box-office success? We look at DC's latest movie, its budget, and what it needs to become a hit.

Clayface has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with 76%, meaning it's now "Certified Fresh" on the review aggregator. 92 verdicts have been counted, and while we'd expect anywhere from 100 to 200 more reviews to be added in the coming days, it would take a lot for that score to change drastically. The last time that happened to DC was Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020; the sequel started at 89%, and ultimately plummeted to 57%.

Let's answer the question above early (if only to avoid anyone reading the headline and furiously heading to the comments section below to rage-type a response). Yes, Clayface's Rotten Tomatoes score is absolutely a win for DC Studios and the DCU.

The R-rated horror movie isn't as critically acclaimed as Lanterns (91%), Creature Commandos (93%), and Peacemaker Season 2 (94%), but it's above Supergirl (52%) and not that far behind Superman (83%). In terms of the DCEU, Clayface sits in the same ballpark as Blue Beetle (78%) and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (79%).

Both of those movies flopped at the box office, so it's hard to say how much this score will benefit Clayface heading into the weekend. Current projections point to the horror title opening between $22 million and $28 million in North America, which is a modest start for a comic book adaptation that reportedly cost $44 million to produce.

That's also a fraction of Supergirl's $170 million production budget (the movie flopped with $126 million worldwide by the end of its run). Whatever happens with Clayface this weekend, it will likely be the coming weekends that decide whether the James Watkins-helmed movie is considered a hit.

There's no word on its marketing budget, so we don't currently know what Clayface needs to gross to break even. However, we'd estimate it will need $110 million to $140 million based on similar horror titles.

While Clayface has earned a largely positive response from critics, it hasn't reached the same level of acclaim as some of this year's better-reviewed horror releases (Backrooms (86%), Obsession (93%), and Resident Evil (96%)). That could limit the buzz needed to turn a relatively modest opening into a sustained box-office success.

Even if "Fresh" reviews aren't glowing, it's all about word of mouth and whether superhero movie fans feel Clayface is worthy of multiple viewings. If the DCU movie were an MCU title, its Rotten Tomatoes score would place it alongside TV shows and movies like Ironheart (76%), She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (77%), and Thor (77%), none of which rank among the franchise's most beloved releases according to many fans.

When all is said and done, Clayface could prove to be a modest success for DC Studios, but it's too early to say whether a positive Rotten Tomatoes score will translate into box-office returns. A reported $44 million production budget gives the R-rated horror movie a more manageable target than some of the DCU's bigger releases, but it'll need strong word of mouth to build on its opening weekend.

That's particularly important with David Ellison's Skydance now overseeing Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios. Whether a relatively low-budget DC movie that earns respectable reviews and turns a modest profit will be considered a win under the new ownership remains to be seen.

@JoshWilding - a victim of your own circumstance.

You wrote a fairly normal article, but then have to rage bait as the first comment. Can't help yourself can you?
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 10/22/2026, 5:33 AM
@RedFury - If that comment enraged you, then I'd suggest therapy.

@JoshWilding - right to the gaslighting. Didn't expect any less from you.

I never said I was enraged Josh. I even said you wrote a fairly normal article. But you having to act like a victim right off the bat is so typical of you. Rather than listening to people's criticisms you just double down on more of your BS.

As Seymour Skinner once said, "Am I so out of touch? No, it is the children who are wrong."

@RedFury - If you're overthinking a GIF to this extent in the comments section of a website about comic book movies, I'd definitely suggest therapy. Very liberal, largely incorrect, use of the word "gaslighting," too, though I am concerned that you consider my response a form psychological or emotional abuse. Sending you positive vibes!

RedFury - 10/22/2026, 6:02 AM
@JoshWilding - lol tells me to go to therapy and then says he's not gaslighting me. You literally did the thing you're saying that you're not doing.

Can't make this stuff up.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 10/22/2026, 6:04 AM
@RedFury - The therapy wasn't for the supposed "gaslighting." It's because you're getting very worked up over a GIF.
RedFury
RedFury - 10/22/2026, 6:18 AM
@JoshWilding - dude it's not the gif, it's the acting like a victim before anyone even posted anything. You're basically asking for people to rage in the comments, and you know this.

Listen, I don't have a problem with a lot of what you do. I appreciate that you constantly put content out on this site for users like myself to read. But you have to see that you're the only poster on this site that elicits the response from the users that you do. If you would just take a page from the other writers play book and stop injecting your articles with such vitriol and smear campaigns, you'd probably get a lot less hate. Let the readers make up their own minds. We appreciate the constant flow of articles, it keeps this site going. But we don't appreciate how much of your opinion you state as fact. If you want to do that, just write opinion pieces and stick them in the right section.

Though I understand I'm just a random internet guy and you don't have to listen to any of my rambling. But maybe just once take some people's critiscms to heart and be better for the community.

JoshWilding - 10/22/2026, 6:22 AM
@RedFury - It's a humorous GIF cheekily referencing something said in the first paragraph of the article. I appreciate the appreciation, but beyond that, I have nothing to add that hasn't been addressed on multiple occasions, especially if you perceive said GIF as some calculated mission to get "people to rage in the comments," something only one person is currently doing. Have a good one!

@RedFury - "You literally did the thing you're saying that you're not doing."

Look in the mirror. In the broader sense that you're using the term, your whole thing here is actually gaslighting. You're backseat-driving Josh's first comment telling him that it's symptomatic of his dysfunctional psychology and that he needs to readjust to your specifications to function better in life and that people will like him more and that they don't like him now because of the way he is. So he should listen to you because your offering helpful and friendly advice.

You see that right?
RedFury
RedFury - 10/22/2026, 7:49 AM
@UltronIO - you've got a point I can't deny, that's fair. But I'm not the only one saying this kind of thing, it echoes throughout the site.

And sure maybe I'm projecting a bit, but it comes from a place of care for our community. Should I take that apon myself and harsh on Josh? Probably not, but one can only take so much you know?

I wouldn't care even if it got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, I'm still not watching a Clayface movie without Batman in it.
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 10/22/2026, 5:42 AM
Yes. Making a "Batman adjacent" movie make money without Batman is a win for DC studios. It's a confidence move.

Why you'd do that without doing a DCU Batman movie FIRST?... I got nothing.

Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/22/2026, 8:31 AM
@UltimaRex - Realistically if it wasn’t for the Batman Part II’s delays, I would’ve said 2027 (having both Superman and Batman movies the same year as initially planned) or even 2028 would’ve been the perfect window to release TBATB.

I feel like for the most part comments about why hasn’t the DCU Batman released yet forget about it conflicting with The Batman Part II’s release window or how a merge isn’t as easy as they think it is

Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/22/2026, 8:22 AM
@UltronIO - Wonder woman’s catastrophic drop from 89% of 57 wasn’t some common phenomenon. By immediately making the comparisons to Wonder Woman 84, Supergirl and Madame Web, you’re already framing Clayface as if it’s almost inevitably going to bomb both critically + financially, where the verdict for either is still way too early.
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/22/2026, 9:17 AM
@Kahron0 - It's more common with these kinds of movies than others because of how important they are as part of a franchise that isn't doing well that the studio needs to do well.

The reason WW84 dropped so much is that RT frontloaded the reviews around the opening weekend. WB owns RT.

So you can see now how that is very relevant to Clayface.
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/22/2026, 9:20 AM
@UltronIO - WB also famously threatened RT critics into giving Aquaman a favorable review. And we only know about that because they were caught. How many times did they not get caught?

Yesterday, you were calling Rotten Tomatoes’ Fresh classifications “nonsensical” and suggesting conspiracy theories about critics being on studio payroll weren’t so far-fetched in the comments. Today, Clayface is Certified Fresh at 76%, and suddenly it (might be) a win for DC Studios….but one that requires an entire article explaining why it might not mean much. Of course, a positive critics’ score doesn’t guarantee box-office success historically. Nobody is arguing otherwise. But this is becoming an increasingly predictable pattern: whenever there’s positive DCU news, there’s nearly ALWAYS a catch and it’s treated with immediate skepticism, while negative developments are taken at face value and are readily incorporated into the broader narrative that Gunn is failing.

And per usual, I suspect you’ll gravitate toward the most inflammatory comments (like RedFury’s) because they’re easier to dismiss than the people offering substantive criticism of your journalism. The irony is that you repeatedly position yourself as someone who wants nothing to do with the drama…yet you continue to contribute to the same environment through provocative framing, snark, and comments that predictably escalate tensions and arguments. When someone raises a substantive concern about your editorial approach, responding to the easiest personal jab doesn’t address the criticism itself.

And before you lump me in with people who think you must glaze everything DCU-related, let me be clear: I couldn’t care less whether you like Clayface(it was a fair review) and I’m not arguing that the DCU is above criticism. The issue is your editorial pattern over the past few months. Between the selective skepticism toward positive developments, the increasingly loaded framing, and the way individual project criticisms repeatedly become evidence that Gunn is incapable of running a studio, it increasingly feels like the conclusion comes first and the coverage is built around it. Other editors on this site criticize DCU projects without generating this same recurring dynamic. Maybe that’s worth reflecting on instead of dismissing every critic of your coverage as an overly sensitive fan.

Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/22/2026, 11:37 AM
@dragon316 - The problem isn’t whether Rotten Tomatoes positive scores means a guaranteed to be profitable, but the selective framing on when RT scores matter or not based off the preconceived narrative.

It still remains to be seen whether or not Clayface is a box office hit, but based off of the framing from a couple of articles before hand, it was being positioned as another critical disaster in prior articles for Vision Quest, Lanterns and even Supergirl were using RT as important metric.

But since Clayfaces positive reception so far doesn’t fit the narrative that it’s the next Morbius catastrophe- it’s RT Score is being scrutinized.

@UltronIO - Go back reread my comment quote where I said I think the movie is guaranteed to be good.

Either you’re just rage baiting or you generally just skimmed my comment because you assumed anyone that isn’t just spamming comments that Gunn needs to be fired immediately means they think the DCU is above criticism
Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/22/2026, 11:55 AM
@vectorsigma - I wouldn’t use the term “sociopath.” That’s a bit harsh, despite my very blunt criticisms of Josh’s “journalism.” That being said, I’ve noticed he has a tendency to sidestep constructive criticism that isn’t inflammatory or full of personal attacks, while engaging with the more aggressive comments. As I said before, the latter are much easier to dismiss than substantive criticism of his editorial approach, which requires actual self-reflection or accountability.

He’s not the only editor on the site, and other writers have criticized the DCU without receiving nearly the same level of pushback. That alone should at least prompt some reflection on why his coverage consistently generates these reactions.

To me, it’s a case of throwing rocks and hiding your hands. Whether intentional or not, he contributes to the same toxic environment he claims to be above, engages with the most inflammatory responses on here and X, and seemingly avoids people who are willing to engage with him in good faith and offer substantive criticism without resorting to personal attacks.
