THE BATMAN 2: It's Now Been Confirmed That Zoë Kravitz Will Not Return As Selina Kyle/Catwoman

We now have confirmation that Zoë Kravitz will not reprise her role as Selina Kyle/Catwoman for Matt Reeves' long-awaited sequel to The Batman...

Back in August, it was reported that Zoë Kravitz may not be back as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, for The Batman - Part II. The rumor stemmed from journalists being told not to ask the actress about Matt Reeves' sequel during a Caught Stealing press junket, because she's "not in it and doesn't know anything."

We thought this might simply have been a way for Kravitz to avoid a barrage of questions about a movie she's not allowed to say much about, but Variety has now confirmed that, "Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman is not expected to return for the film, according to sources with knowledge of the production."

The Batman concluded with The Dark Knight (Robert Pattinson) and Catwoman parting ways, as the latter left Gotham City to start a new life. The two had formed a close bond over the course of the movie, however, and it was generally assumed that Selina would return to lend the hero a hand in the sequel.

Catwoman also factored into the season finale of The Penguin, with the incarcerated Sofia Falcone receiving a letter from the half-sister she never knew she had.

We'd be very surprised if this plot point wasn't revisited down the line (depending on the uncertain future of the "BatVerse" following the advent of The DCU), but Reeves and co-writer Mat Tomlin clearly felt that there wasn't room to continue Kyle's arc in this movie.

Last night, the news broke that Scarlett Johansson is in final talks for an undisclosed role in The Batman - Part II. Rumor has it that she will play a villain, or possibly a love interest of Bruce Wayne's who is revealed to be a villain.

Though he declined to share any specific plot details, Reeves did confirm that production is scheduled to get underway early next year in a recent interview.

“We’re beginning. We’re staffing up. We’re starting to get our crew back together. We’re getting ready. We’re basically entering [pre-production]. We’ll be making the movie in the spring... super excited,” he told THR.

“Because of what the first movie was and what [The Batman: Part 2] is, which is so much a detective story, the idea of trying to protect the secrets of the movie is super important because it’s a mystery. That would be an extra level of heartbreak if that part of it started getting out. You wanna keep the surprise so the fans... can have the fun experience that I always love going to the movies, which was to go and be surprised.”

Reeves also confirmed that Pattinson has now read the script - which was delivered to him in a highly secure envelope that required a separate code to open - and was very happy with the story, which will seemingly take the iconic DC Comics hero in a direction we have not seen before. “

"He’s Batman, so if he doesn’t like it, not good. So, I was super excited because I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman, and for [Bruce Wayne] has never been done before in this way. And I had a feeling he would respond in this way, the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging.”

Disappointing, but realistically what more are you gonna do with her character within the context of the new story they need to tell? She left town at the end of the first film, so it makes sense to me to move on from Selina.

@TheVandalore - agreed, and she can still have a life in gotham and (story wise) may be better suited for a return in the penguin season 2

There was a rumor about a Catwoman HBO show being worked on that would cover where she went after the events of the first movie, and would conclude with her returning to Gotham to be part of the final movie. I assume Sofia Falcone would also be part of this series as a result of that tease at the end of Penguin. If Penguin survives Part II, he could also be part of that show as well.

@TheJok3r - Gotham City Sirens. I'm sure there's a Harley in that Asylum, as a patient or as a doctor.

Maybe she escapes using Dr Quinzel as a hostage.

Would have been nice to see her in the film again, but this also frees up space to explore other characters without having to sacrifice screentime. It would have been nice to get a cameo from her just so we know where she's at, but my guess is that it didn't fit the story in a flowy way so Reeves decided against it; which I honestly respect.

Really looking forward to hearing who Scarjo ends up playing.

@RedFury - The movie still hasn't started filming, so a cameo at the end isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

@TheJok3r - so true, I kind of figured since the report says she won't be in it at all, that we aren't getting a cameo. But it's definitely a possibility that they do end up putting her in there. And if what you said in your above comment about a rumored Catwoman series turns out to be true, that would be a great bridge.

Worst part of the last movie. Good riddance!

It’s fine she was just ok. Easily the least interesting character in the first movie and isn’t needed to return. Now if Sophia Falcone could show up….

I mean , that makes sense given she left Gotham at the end of the first one to start fresh so it would be odd for her to come back in the very next film especially if it’s meant to take place not that long after The Batman….

However I still feel there’s a story there of her moving to either Bludhaven or going out of the country to Italy like in certain other comic runs & getting caught up in something which could make for a fun spin off series rather then them trying to a Arkham show etc.

Anyway , I liked Kravitz’s version of Selina so do hope we see her sooner then later!!.

Good, I liked her in the movie but she has nothing to add here and has no personal stakes in this.

Catwoman is not traditionally a part of Batman's supporting cast like, say, Alfred or Gordon.

I'm looking forward to the sequel more now.

I mean why is everyone shocked? Given how the film ended I could see how she would try to stay away seemingly for good only to return in Part 3 out of real necessity.

Did anyone watch the movie? It was a send-off for her character. If anything she'd come back for the third. Not surprising in the least. And she was great in the role, real chemistry with her ex lol

Disappointing, if true. She never got to don a full-on Catwoman mask, she didn't have to leave at the end of the movie, and it was Penguin's backstory that got fleshed out with his own show, while she got nothing. Also, I'm not confident that Matt Reeves does a third movie, because of how slow he is.

I expected not to like her as Catwoman. But I was surprised. I think she did a great job in the role. I hope she does return either in this movie or the next if there is one.

Sorry to hear that but still hoping they green light a miniseries for her on HBO, similar to Penguin. This would also let them continue storylines in that series

Eh, she left Gotham...bring her back for the 3rd. It wouldn't make sense for her to return just to help Bruce in the 2nd one.

Isn't this one supposed to take place like right after the 1st? Why would she return so suddenly.
TheStranger
TheStranger - 12/4/2025, 4:02 PM
She needs to strike a deal to come back as the Catwoman for the DCU, whatever that is this week. She was unreasonably good in that role and deserves more.
