BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA Set For #1 This Weekend; Will Pass $200 Million By Sunday
As we told you last night, Wally Pfister's Transcendence has been yet another Johnny Depp led flop in North America and now looks set to finish at a lowly fourth place. However, Captain America: The Winter Soldier however will likely take #1 and will soon pass $200 million domestically!
Easter weekend at the North American box office looks set to be very good to Marvel as Captain America: The Winter Soldier is widely believed to be the favourite to take the #1 spot yet again. Last weekend, analysts predicted that Rio 2 would triumph and pretty much no one thought the Marvel Studios sequel could win against the very decent looking Transcendence after three weeks of release! Well, with the Wally Pfister movie panned by critics and a lowly C+ CinemaScore from viewers, that will now take fourth place behind Heaven is for Real. It seems as if that movie will earn as little as $13 million for the weekend after debuting yesterday with a measly $4.8 million. It was Captain America: The Winter Soldier which took #1 on Friday with $9.7 million, and it should easily beat Rio 2's projected weekend haul of $23 million with $25 million. The Marvel Studios movie will also pass the $200 million mark domestically by Sunday afternoon. As we told you a few days ago, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 started off its international run (no further updates on that as of yet) strongly, but it should be interesting to see whether that movie has the same sort of positive word of mouth to hold off competition from Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past when it does eventually open in North America. What do you guys think?
