UPDATE: X-Men Reboot Casts Heartstopper Star Kit Connor As The MCU's Cyclops

Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot has finally found its Cyclops, with Kit Connor (The Wild Robot) set to take on the role of Scott Summers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

UPDATE: Variety has stated that the X-Men reboot "will kick off the third saga of Marvel" following Avengers: Secret Wars' release next December, which suggests the movie is eyeing a May 5, 2028 release. If so, that likely means Ghost Rider is coming on July 28, with Black Panther 3 wrapping up the year on December 15.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Sadie Sink set to play Jean Grey and Ready or Not's Samara Weaving taking on the role of Emma Frost, Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is quickly taking shape.

Today, Deadline brings word that Heartstopper star Kit Connor, 22, has been cast as the MCU's Scott Summers/Cyclops. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier reportedly met with several candidates before deciding last week that Connor was the right choice to play the hero.

The trade adds, "Following a number of meetings and auditions over the last couple [of] months, sources say a small group of actors tested after the Fourth of July holiday and after a lot of back and forth, Marvel landed on Connor as the choice to play Summers."

Introduced by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963's The X-Men #1, Scott Summers has become one of Marvel's most iconic mutants and is the longtime field leader of the X-Men. Born with the ability to unleash devastating optic blasts from his eyes, Scott relies on a ruby-quartz visor to control his powers.

As Professor Charles Xavier's first student, Cyclops has become renowned for his tactical brilliance, unwavering sense of duty, and often complicated relationship with fellow X-Man Jean Grey.

Whether leading the X-Men or X-Factor, Scott remains one of mutantkind's greatest champions, and he even briefly headed down the "Magneto" route with a somewhat villainous turn after Avengers vs. X-Men. It's also worth pointing out that, during Grant Morrison's New X-Men run, Cyclops cheated on Jean and became romantically involved with Emma Frost.

Connor, meanwhile, is an English actor who rose to international fame as Nick Nelson in Netflix's Heartstopper. He has also appeared in His Dark Materials, Rocketman, Warfare, and voiced Brightbill in DreamWorks' The Wild Robot. Connor has earned widespread praise for his dramatic range, and has long been a fan-favourite choice to play the Young Avengers' Hulkling.

Cyclops was previously portrayed in live-action by James Marsden in Fox's original X-Men trilogy and X-Men: Days of Future Past, while Tye Sheridan played a younger version of the character in X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool 2, and Dark Phoenix.

There are lots of rumours swirling around the X-Men cast, with Adam Driver supposedly playing the villainous Mister Sinister. Charles Melton has been named as a contender for Beast, with Cailee Spaeny in the mix for Rogue. As for Professor X, it sounds like it's down to Tom Pelphrey and Bill Skarsgård. We're expecting an official announcement at D23 next weekend.

Despite rumblings that Narcos star Wagner Moura is a possibility for Mister Sinister, the actor set the record straight during a recent interview with ScreenRant.

"Dude, I've been reading these things on the internet, and people are sending that to me. I mean, I'm a fan of that whole entire universe, especially when I was a kid reading all those graphic novels and everything," he shared. "But there's nothing. No one contacted me about it. It's just something that people read. But on the internet, I don't know nothing honestly about it. I would love it."

X-Men is expected to be released in theaters in 2028 or 2029.

These announcements feel really random. Why are they announcing the cast like this?
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/6/2026, 12:38 PM
@TheDpool - It's pretty common for the Hollywood trades like Deadline to break casting news like this one at a time. It's been a while since we've seen a cast assembled in this way—Eternals was probably the last time, though I think Superman was somewhat similar—but expect a full cast reveal at D23.

@TheDpool - It looks like they are announcing them as they are signing them up, so I imagine this random trend will continue until all the cast is signed up and announced.

@AllStarComments - Disney's sick enough to try that sadly, Wolverine is a character disney hates internaly because he represents the max in terms of what they deam as "toxic masculininty"..its why the'vy been deliberatly ruining his character in the comics ever since they took over the i.p/(Examples: logan hooking up with hercules..logan have threesomes with scott and jean..and many other examples. there probally going to try to adapt karoka eventually...r.i.p. X-MEN

@Dahulk2001 - If they pull that crap in the films it’s over. General audiences will not put up with that BS.
Dahulk2001
Dahulk2001 - 8/6/2026, 3:05 PM
@Bucky74 -I have no faith whatsoever that they'll do right by these characters.

Instead of embracing the Claremont era—the run that made the X-Men a cultural phenomenon—they seem determined to move past decades of classic stories in favor of the All-New, All-Different era, despite how divisive that period proved to be with much of the readership.

It's the same pattern we've seen throughout the MCU: racing past the material that built Marvel's reputation to adapt some of its most controversial modern publishing decisions.

Just look at Captain America: Brave New World. The reaction has been polarized from every direction, yet the lesson never seems to stick.

The irony is that corporations may own the intellectual property, but they don't own the legacy. That legacy has been carried for decades by the readers who bought the comics, recommended them to friends, introduced them to their children, and kept these characters alive long before Hollywood discovered how valuable they were.

Those fans are the real gatekeepers of the brand—not because they hold the copyright, but because they're the ones who preserved its identity. Ignore them for long enough, and eventually you inherit the trademark while losing everything that made it worth owning in the first place.

soberchimera
soberchimera - 8/6/2026, 12:51 PM
@DocSpock - Yeah, I'm really getting annoyed at Hollywood's double standard of casting British actors as American characters, but American actors almost never getting cast as British characters. The only examples I can think of are Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow/various other roles, and RDJ as Sherlock Holmes.
tRuckRogers46A
tRuckRogers46A - 8/6/2026, 2:42 PM
@soberchimera - that's because, generally speaking, Brits can do convincing American accents but Americans absolutely cannot do convincing British accents.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 8/6/2026, 3:16 PM
@soberchimera - Don't forget Kevin Costner as Robin Hood. - which may be the primary reason why they don't let Americans attempt British accents. Or maybe I'm thinking of Keanu Reeves in Dracula.

They expect these people to carry this franchise for the next 10-15 years, at least.

You wanted them to go with actors in their late 30's to mid-40's?
