Lanterns Season Finale Clip Makes Hal Jordan The Most Hated Man In The DCU

Hal Jordan may be the Emerald Knight in the comics, but in the DCU, he's the most hated man in Nebraska. A new clip from Lanterns' season finale is here, and it catches us up on his missing years.

The first clip from Sunday's season finale of Lanterns has been released, filling in some of the gaps in Hal Jordan's life between 2016 and 2026. Back in Rushville, Nebraska, Hal finds himself being defended from the wrath of the townspeople by Sheriff Kerry.

It's made clear that, following Hal's battle with the Manhunter, everyone hates him. It seems he's still viewed as a hero in some parts of the country, but this clip from Lanterns appears eager to remind fans that the former superhero is largely despised.

This won't come as a shock to many unhappy fans, as the DCU has already established that Hal is a racist and a failure. However, it's still not entirely clear why his battle with the Manhunter led to him being imprisoned; we know he acted selfishly to protect his status as a Green Lantern, but he still did everything a hero arguably could to protect the town from Zoe's attack.

Zoe was an alien invader who had committed genocide in space, so even if some innocents died in the crossfire, why Hal has been vilified is hard to say.

The Lanterns finale has a lot of story to tell this Sunday, including who killed Hal, what the deal is with Sinestro, and how John Stewart becomes Earth's Green Lantern alongside Guy Gardner.

"The thing that has been very, very shocking to me was the inability to have some nuance [about Hal's portrayal]," Lanterns writer Vanessa Baden Kelly recently said of the negative reaction from fans to Hal's portrayal. "I'm from Florida, so I grew up around a lot of white people who would probably use the N-word amongst their peers and then also turn around and defend you in something."

She added, "I can look at Hal's microaggressions and be like, yeah, he's got some racist tendencies because he's a man of a certain age that grew up in a certain time and place. I also feel like he probably f***s aliens in other places and doesn't feel like he's non-discriminatory."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Seven episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

@Nomis929 - it's like people around here don't know how to wait for a story to unfold.

@Nomis929 - I bet the writers of that story had a logical and convincing reason for why he went to prison though, instead of “someone had to take the fall…”

@ArthurFuchsache - It is what it is. Just rememeber this is a MOVIE site, not a comic book site, where most stories are wrapped up in 2 hours and most people that are only into movies expect a quick resolution.

Most Comic Book readers realize that a story arc unfolds over a longer period of time.

@soberchimera - It's from 'Emerlad Dawn' retelling of HAl becoming Gl. He was fired from his test pilot job and dumped by Carol Ferris where out of anger and driving under the influence and causing a car crash.

Hal is sentenced to serve prison time for his DUI. he also refuse to take the responsibility of being a Green Lantern out of fear.

@Nomis929 - And that’s a legitimate and convincing reason for sending him to prison in that story, it doesn’t at all validate or excuse the extremely stupid reason he was sent to prison in the show.

@soberchimera - I think Hal's arrest and impresonment on the show is being used as a "scapegoat" since most people in town and the town in general was dependent on having Zoe's favor which would cause a bigger issue for them than throwing HAl under the bus.

Still beating that dead horse. She’s a moron, and Hal isn’t a racist. Also, and ignorant and purposely misleading take on that clip.

I never said it was better, only wanting to point out a distinction in terms:

Overt racism: “I hate John because he's Black.”-Never Happened

Racial prejudice: treating John differently because of assumptions associated with his race. - Unconfirmed

Microaggression: a particular comment/action that can communicate a racial slight or assumption, sometimes without conscious intent. - Absolutely

Racial blind spot: the person may genuinely not recognize that their behavior has a racial dimension.
-Assumed

@Baf - I don't think many would object to this list (except the phrasing maybe? - always thought microagression sounded so wimpy and dead on arrival because everyone would just be at everyone's throat if we're all looking for minor infractions against each other all the live long day).

That said, again in general, the distinctions in that list are useful. But I would like to point out that lists like this seem only to be directed towards white people to "learn" and behave by, rarely if ever, towards any other minority groups. So instead it's like here's the expectation:

Overt racism: white guy saying “I hate John because he's Black.”

Racial prejudice: white person treating John differently because of assumptions associated with his race.

Microaggression: a particular comment/action from a white person that can communicate a racial slight or assumption, sometimes without conscious intent.

Racial blind spot: a white person may genuinely not recognize that their behavior has a racial dimension.

Aside from the writer saying her viewpoint (which is insanely biased), can anyone show me one instance on this show where Hal came across as a racist? The “Cosby Show” reference just showed he was out of touch, but hardly racist. If anything he’s probably the most heroic character on the entire show.

@Redking77 - "If anything he’s probably the most heroic character on the entire show."

Right!? Superheroes TOTALLY crash their car's into poles with someone stuck in it while it's going into flames and tell them "GOOD LUCK" while flying away from the wreckage!
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/2/2026, 10:52 AM
@Redking77 - agreed

Just because the writer is giving her viewpoint doesn’t mean that how it is in the show because Hal may be ignorant at times but he’s definitely not racist and does not come across that in the show.

@Irregular - It wasn’t in flames when he was walking away. It WAS when Zoe was there and she let John burn alive, but she’s the good guy and Hal’s the REAL villain right?
Malatrova15
Malatrova15 - 10/2/2026, 10:56 AM
@Irregular - its justified, unless the copilot is called someting-stein and is part of the god chosen tribe, white men are not required to help them, we only help the greatest ally of USA

@soberchimera - "It wasn’t in flames when he was walking away. It WAS when Zoe was there and she let John burn alive, but she’s the good guy and Hal’s the REAL villain right?"

If I crash a car full speed into a pole with you in it and it catches on fire after I leave and you burn to death, I'll be the one charged with murder, not the person who watches.

Zoe and Hal are dogshit people (And so is John)
soberchimera
soberchimera - 10/2/2026, 11:05 AM
@FireGunn - From a legal standpoint, they’re both at fault. From a moral standpoint, what Zoe did was FAR worse.
Redking77
Redking77 - 10/2/2026, 11:05 AM
@Irregular - The first time, Hal left the ring so that John was protected (clearly he had faith in John) & the second time, the car was wrecked but not on fire. He saw John was stuck but not injured and even made the comment that he needed John out of the way for a while. Hal mentioned over and over throughout the show that Lanterns don’t kill unless they have too. Race had nothing to do with it.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/2/2026, 11:07 AM
@soberchimera - "what Zoe did was FAR worse."

Disagreed. I think committing act is worse than watching the act happen but even if it was worse, Zoe is a villain. I expect her to be evil lol
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/2/2026, 11:08 AM
@Redking77 - yes

The car wasn’t on fire when he left John if I’m not mistaken…

If it was then I think he would have saved him since he just wanted him out of the way for a bit as he said.

Hell Zoe is more villainous for being there when the car wasn’t on fire but not saving him until he got burned so that she could make a deal with him.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 10/2/2026, 11:13 AM
@FireGunn - Well Hal didn’t know the car was going to blow up, he was just trying to incapacitate John, not kill him. Again, he’s legally at fault, but his intent wasn’t murder.

Except he didn’t [frick] up, he tried to save the town from the satellite death lasers, they’re a psychotic death cult that worships a psychotic alien robot, and this show is trying to get us to believe they’re normal, salt if the earth people.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/2/2026, 11:00 AM
@soberchimera - Hal commits vehicular manslaughter on Jon Stewart dude. They've character assassinated him beyond redemption
soberchimera
soberchimera - 10/2/2026, 11:03 AM
@FireGunn - Technically yes, but he wouldn’t have let John burn alive like Zoe did. He was reckless and aloof to his actions, whereas Zoe’s was straight up cruel and callous.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/2/2026, 11:05 AM
@soberchimera - I don't expect the villain to act in good faith though. I expect Hal, The Green Lantern, to act in good faith and with good intentions. Him doing what he did to John is not him being "aloof". It's borderline evil.
Redking77
Redking77 - 10/2/2026, 11:10 AM
@FireGunn - have you actually watched the show or just the articles about it. First of all, manslaughter equates death, and John didn’t die. Second, the car wasn’t going full speed and when Hal left, John was incapacitated but unhurt. I appreciate your opinion but this time you’re reaching.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/2/2026, 11:39 AM
@Redking77 - 1. I've watched all 7 episodes
2. John would've died without Zoe
3. Yes it was going full speed
4. He was hurt and he luckily didn't break his neck
Redking77
Redking77 - 10/2/2026, 11:57 AM
@FireGunn - Agree to disagree. If it was going full speed, John would have died. I’ll give you that John would have died without Zoe, but she let him burn first so that he would have to agree to her terms. What it really comes down to is do you really believe Hal would have left him had he any idea that John was really hurt & in danger…or are you just trying to be “right”.
